How to finish knitting with purl stitches. Finishing knitting a scarf: learning to close the loops

Knitted scarf is one of the most popular accessories, both in the warm season and in winter. This detail of a woman's wardrobe can become the main accent of any fashionable look. Therefore, needlewomen very often knit such products with various patterns and decorative elements in the form of fringe. And for beginning craftswomen, knitting a scarf is one of the mandatory stages in learning. After the fabric for a scarf of the required length is ready, many people have a logical question about how to finish knitting it. Therefore, in this article we will focus on answering this question.

Options for closing loops when knitting a scarf

Option 1

So, the knitting of your product is coming to an end and you need to figure out how to finish it. In this case, the position of the hands and, accordingly, the knitting needles should remain unchanged. The first option is probably the simplest. It will help you finish knitting quickly. To do this, you need to alternately knit a pair of loops together until you have only 1 loop left. The right free knitting needle is inserted into the initial two links so that it can peek out from opposite side canvas (back wall). Next, you grab the working thread and pull it through two buttonholes. As a result, out of two, you get one loop on the right needle. Change it to the knitting needle on the left side, thereby adding it to the other links. Thus, this tool is free for you. Then, according to this scheme of actions, you need to finish knitting. This process is repeated until there are no links left on the left tool:

  • the right knitting needle passes through 2 loops;
  • the working thread is captured;
  • the thread is pulled through 2 stitches;
  • a single loop is changed from the right needle to the left.

Finishing knitting in this way, the knitting needle on the right side remains free.

Having correctly repeated all the steps, you should have a tight and even braid along the edge of the scarf. In this case, only 1 link should remain on the left instrument.

To form a strong knot, that is, so that your work does not unravel, you need to break or trim the working thread, leaving a tip about ten centimeters long. The last loop is inserted into the free knitting needle, picked up and the thread is pulled through it. After this, you just need to tighten it tightly with your hands into a knot near the broken thread.

In addition, to complete the process, all you have to do is thread the free end of the thread among the loops of the knitted fabric. Don't leave this tip hanging down. If you decide to decorate the edges of the scarf with fringe, it may still lie unevenly among it, breaking out of the general line.

Fringe is made quite simply, from the same yarn from which you knitted the product. There is a separate interesting article on our website devoted to this issue. It examines step by step simple technique making fringes with your own hands and how to attach them to a scarf. This decor can also be considered a unique way to help finish work on a knitted fabric.

Option 2

Let's consider another option that will help you finish knitting a scarf. It is more convenient to use in the case when you knitted the product not on the basis of a regular elastic band, but used an interesting three-dimensional pattern. Therefore, forming a tight and even edge with a pigtail, as in the first case, will slightly spoil the appearance of the scarf, as it can pull it down at the edges.

At this option, you need to remove the edge on the knitting needle on the right side without knitting, and knit the next one according to the pattern. After this, on this instrument you have 2 links, i.e. knitted according to the pattern and edge. Next, the knitted one is pulled through the edge. One buttonhole has now formed on the right knitting needle (it will be an edge buttonhole). Next you need to knit another loop (third) according to the pattern. Then pull it through the second one. Now on the right tool we again have one buttonhole, which will become an edge buttonhole. Thus, you should knit the loops step by step according to the pattern and pull them through the previous ones. As a result, you will be able to close the edge of the product.

The final link is fixed in the same way as in the first version, and the tip is hidden among the knitted loops. This method produces an elastic edge, which is most suitable for a scarf, knitted with a relief volumetric pattern. Here you can also make fringe and add it to the fabric.

The following video lessons will tell you how to properly finish knitting a particular product. Using such master classes in video format, it is easiest for beginning needlewomen to learn how to carefully and correctly complete their work.

With the arrival of a frosty and windy winter, we all strive to acquire a warm stylish clothes, but this does not always work out. Selection of knitted jerseys in trading network quite extensive, but not everyone manages to choose for themselves exactly the model that will satisfy their needs for beauty and style.

Therefore, many people prefer to learn how to knit. At the same time, you need to be able to choose good quality yarn and master the necessary needlework techniques. Once the yarn has been selected and the knitting process has come to an end, we are faced with the task of finishing the work beautifully and correctly. Here everything will depend on what exactly you are knitting.

If these are mittens or a hat, then you need to know the technique of decreasing the loops to round the shape at the end of the work. But in this case, we will talk about how to finish a scarf fabric with knitting needles, for which you will not have to decrease or increase the loops, because it is knitted with straight fabric, without rounding. Knitting a scarf is a very simple needlework, especially if you decide to do it with a simple pattern. The finish of knitting the scarf will depend on the chosen pattern. The simpler the pattern, the easier it will be to finish.

Step-by-step photo lesson on closing loops for beginners

There are three most common ways to close stitches with knitting needles:

  • For products with stockinette stitch.
  • For products with reverse satin stitch.
  • For elastic bands and relief patterns.

Closing the loops with a pigtail

Schematically it looks like this:

Now we will look at closing the P of the last row in more detail. Earlier we already talked about the simplest and most common way in which you can finish a canvas. It consists of knitting 2 loops together.

We do this until only 1 stitch remains on the knitting needles. In this case, it is necessary to insert the right knitting needle into the first 2 stitches so that it appears on the second side. It is necessary to pick up the loops from the back wall. Then use the right knitting needle to grab the working thread, passing it through these 2 loops. As a result, we form a new loop. Now we transfer it to the left knitting needle, connecting it with the other P rows:

In this case, the right one is free from loops. After this, you need to perform the entire cycle of operations from the very beginning. This must be done until all Ps are completed on the left knitting needle. If all closing operations are done correctly, then you will form beautiful region in the shape of a straight braid:

There is only one P left on the left knitting needle. After this, we need to tighten this P so that a strong knot is formed. To do this, cut the thread, leaving a yarn length of 10 cm. Then the tip of the thread must be threaded into the only loop that we have. Next, carefully tighten the thread, resulting in a strong knot.

Closing loops by pulling

You can finish knitting with the second technique, which is used for scarves knitted with twisted or voluminous, as well as relief patterns. In the case of this type of ornament, an even and dense braid of the last row will be out of place. It will tighten the edge of the product, changing and spoiling it visually.

This technique consists of removing the edge P and knitting the second one according to the pattern. As a result, there are 2 loops on the right needle. We need to stretch the second P through the first edge, as a result of which only one P remains. Then we knit the third P according to the pattern, and stretch it through the previous one. When closing the loops in this way, there will always be one P on the right knitting needle. By using this technique, that is, knitting the Ps according to the pattern, and stretching them through the previous one, you will complete knitting the last row of the fabric:

This method of closing the P allows you to knit the last row of a scarf that will not tighten the edge of the fabric and will fit perfectly into the volumetric ornament. Any of the two techniques for closing the P allows you to add a beautiful and bright fringe to the edge of the scarf:

If you finish knitting a scarf with fringe, then visually the product becomes elegant and stylish. To do this, you need to choose the length of the fringe and start making it. Cut out a rectangle from thick cardboard so that its width matches the expected length of the fringe. Instead of cardboard, you can use a book or a suitable box. Then we begin to wrap the selected shape with threads so that the number of threads matches the number of loops along the outermost row. Next, we cut the wound threads on one side, resulting in a bundle of yarn pieces.

Fold each thread in half and crochet it into one loop along the edge. Pull out the loop, then thread the remaining two free edges of the threads into it. We tighten these threads, forming a strong knot, and we get the first piece of fringe. We continue to work with this technique until we complete the entire P row of the last row.

Ways to complete knitting

Some difficulties arise when the fabric is knitted with complex symmetrical patterns, plaits and braids. Here you need to be careful and finish the row with special care so as not to spoil the appearance of the canvas at the very end. You can use one of the methods below to finish the job.

  • The first method is the simplest and most elementary. It consists of knitting 2 stitches together. As a result, you will get a beautiful, even braid made of closed loops. It is not elastic, that is, it is not subject to stretching. This technique consists of knitting the first stitch together with the second, and transferring the new stitch (R) from the right to the left needle. After this, a new P is knitted together with the next one, that is, the third in a row, and everything is repeated until the very end of the strip (P). When closing the front stitches, do it with front side. But the purl stitches are best closed from the wrong side of the fabric:

  • The second way to close scarf links is to pull the loops through each other. In this case, the shape of the braid will be elastic and stretched. This is how you can finish the fabric when the scarf is knitted with an elastic band or one of the twisted or relief patterns. For this technique of closing loops, the first 2 stitches are knitted according to the pattern. After this, the second P is pulled through the first, the third through the second. We continue this technique until the end of R. For the third technique, the last row of links is closed with a needle.

This technique is used when closing the elastic band, because it allows you to get a smooth edge of the fabric. In this case, you need to make a stitch with a needle, pulling the first three loops together. Then we make the next stitch for the next loops, and so on until the end. This technique can perfectly complete a scarf knitted with an English elastic band:

How to finish a ribbed scarf

This video master class shows one of the already described methods of closing loops, with which you can finish knitting beautifully and neatly. The video shows a scarf knitted with an English elastic band, and also demonstrates the closure of the loops of the last row of this accessory. To finish P, the loops are closed with the most in a simple way, knitting two units together and forming a beautiful braid.

A scarf is an invariable detail in the design of an image and style. Beginning craftswomen always try to start their training by knitting a scarf. Such a wardrobe detail can be warm and openwork, simpler and more elegant, made with simple satin stitch or several patterns at the same time.

But, in addition to the variety of knitting methods, there are many opportunities to finish the work in an original way. The ability to make buboes and tassels, fringe or knit an unusual edge of the fabric will come in handy here. Today we will look at options with which you can finish knitting a scarf.

A simple option - closing the loops

In this case, you only need the ability to knit the main types of loops and design a simple edge of the product. The most popular patterns for simple scarf the knitting needles will be:

  • facial surface;
  • garter stitch;
  • voluminous elastic bands.

Beginner knitters can experiment with different thicknesses of yarn, stripes of patterns, and change the direction of knitting a scarf. But, each product will have to be finished correctly. As soon as the knitting reaches the desired length, we begin to bind off the loops.

The first easy way to finish knitting a scarf. In the last row, first we knit not one loop, but two knit stitches together. We transfer the resulting loop of the new row to the right knitting needle. Now knit this loop together with the next loop of the last row. Again we return the received one to the right knitting needle. The reception continues until the end of the last row. At the end, we thread the end of the thread into the resulting loop from those knitted together and tighten it. The result was an ordinary edge of a knitted fabric with knitting needles. If you controlled the thread tension, the edge will be smooth and will not pull the scarf. If the model was knitted with an elastic band, then you need to close the loops of the last row by alternating knit and purl stitches. For those undergoing training, it is better to use a video explaining the rule for closing loops.

The second option, which will help you finish knitting neatly. For this method you will need a regular crochet hook. We pass the hook through two loops located next to each other and pull the thread through them. Repeat until the end of the last row. The broken end of the thread is pulled into the last loop and tightened.

These are the two main ways to finish a knitted fabric, which are used when knitting scarves. In addition, you can decorate the edge of the product.

Decorating the edge of a knitted product

Let's look at the most common options.

Fringe

The simplest, but very in an effective way finish knitting - make a regular fringe. It's easy to do, but you'll have to pick up a hook. Pre-cut threads twice as long as the planned length of the fringe. Each thread is folded in half. The hook is inserted into the loop of the side braid made with knitting needles, and the fringe thread is pulled into it. Once again, thread the doubled thread into the resulting loop and tighten.

Note! Each subsequent fringe thread must be at an equal distance from the previous one, otherwise the neatness of the product will be compromised.

Brushes

A very popular way to finish a product is to decorate the edge with brushes. They are made different lengths from 12 cm to 18 cm. Longer brushes look more impressive. To make a fluffy tassel, cut pieces of yarn twice as long as the desired size of the tassel. The yarn used is the one that was used to knit the scarf. Make sure that the segments are the same. The accuracy of the decoration and beauty depend on this appearance products. The technique for decorating with tassels is identical to the previous one, when we looked at how to finish knitting with fringe. Only in this case, they pull not one thread, but several, into the side braid of the last row. This will be problematic to do with knitting needles, so take a hook. A combination of threads will help make your tassels more creative. different color in one fold. Especially, it will look good when the knitted scarf also has stripes of different shades:

To finish knitting and evenly distribute the tassels along the edge of the model, do the following. First, make two tassels along the edges of the product. Then one in the middle. Now feel free to distribute the rest along the entire length of the side braid. Another possible option to finish knitting has been mastered.

In a similar way, the product is finished using ribbons - fur, leather, fabric. They are cut and crocheted through the loops of the side braid of the knitted product.

Many knitters do not use additional materials when knitting. They crochet strips of the required length from the same yarn. It is better to knit two rows so that the knitted “thread” is more stable. It turns out smooth beautiful braid, which is pulled into the loops of the last row and finishes the product.

Pompoms

Another stylish design option is pom-poms. A variety of fluffy balls will help you finish knitting a scarf in a very original way. Suitable wool, fur, fluffy fabric:

To make an even fur pompom, prepare a cardboard template - a regular circle. Cut out such a circle from fur fabric, place small stitches with a needle along the outer edge. Now pull the thread tightly. The inside is stuffed with cotton wool, padding polyester, and soft fabric. The remaining hole is carefully sutured. There may be one pompom at the end of the scarf, but a fluffy one. The second option is to place them along the entire edge of the scarf with knitting needles. You can make pompoms from yarn of different shades with harmonious tints of color.

Pockets

And finally, we make stylish pockets on a knitted product:

To do this, you need to close the last row differently. Wrap the scarf fabric to the desired height and knit the loops of the last row at the same time as the loops of the one to the height of which you made the pocket. Secure the remaining thread inside the pocket.

Any method that is not entirely clear must be on video. Therefore, look for options and let your scarf be the most beautiful.
