Evening prayers are short for the coming sleep to read. How to read morning and evening prayers correctly

Hello, dear readers! Orthodox people adhere to certain prayer rules and every day they read morning and evening prayers.

For a long time, humanity has associated going to sleep with higher powers; many people asked themselves, when going to bed, whether the next day would come for them. Therefore it was very important read evening prayers, before going to bed.

Traditions of Orthodox Christians

From time immemorial, at the end of the day, people return to their home in the evening after a difficult working day, talk to their family and friends, wish them a good and restful sleep.

At the same time, on Ancient Rus' never forgot about the Lord, because it was he who gave people confidence in the future, instilled hope and peace in their souls.

It was very important to find a state of peace for bedtime, it was in this state that a person felt completely relaxed and rested, ready to begin new achievements in the morning.

Prayers for the coming sleep were created by holy people in the first centuries after the adoption Christian faith, they are also called rules, since they need to be read regularly.

Today, evening prayers for beginners are available in any form. An Orthodox Christian can not only memorize the sacred text, but also listen to it in the form of an audio recording, watch a video of it, or simply read it online.

In this case, the chosen method of reading the rules will not be important to the Lord, the main thing is that there is deep faith and a desire to serve him sincerely.

These texts were compiled by clergy in the Church Slavonic language; unfortunately, this language is forgotten by many today and is difficult to perceive visually; previously it was included in the compulsory curriculum studied in schools. Today it is studied only by philologists and those who are planning to become a clergyman.

Today, the texts of most evening prayers are adapted to modern man, that is, they can be read in Russian, so their meaning becomes more clear.

How to read sacred texts for the coming sleep

Many beginning Christians are interested in the questions of what evening rules to read, at what time, and how to read. It is worth noting that reading the prayer words will take approximately 15 minutes; such texts should be read slowly, pondering each word; some changes should occur in the person’s soul, awareness of what you are reading.

The Holy Fathers recommend reading prayers for the coming sleep every day, spending an extra half hour on this, which could be spent at the computer or watching TV. It is very important to read the rules before communion and during Lent.

Also, some people are interested in the question of whether it is possible to read evening prayers while sitting. There are several opinions on this issue.

Most believers believe that you only need to turn to the Lord while standing in front of icons. But, at home, many people read sacred texts in a sitting position. Communicating with God while sitting is also allowed for those people who, for some reason, cannot stand at all, or can, but not for long.

What is included in evening prayers

  • First of all, a Christian should read the appeal to the Holy Trinity;
  • Next, the well-known prayer “Our Father” is read by heart (you can read the prayer not only for the coming sleep, but also when there is a strong need to communicate with God);
  • Then the person must turn in turn to God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ. This address was compiled by the monk Macarius the Great, the author of many sacred texts.

Prayer of Macarius the Great

Also, in evening prayers, people often turn to God with a request for forgiveness of sins. This is due to the fact that night is a time of rest, but in this state a person is weak, since demons can take possession of his soul, exposing it to various temptations and temptations that are very difficult to fight.

To prevent demons from visiting and to make it easier to cope with their temptations, it is necessary to cleanse the soul through repentance.

In addition, in the rules read in the evening, it is important for a Christian to turn to his Guardian Angel. Each person who has undergone the rite of baptism has his own Guardian Angel, who protects his soul and body, tells his ward what to do in this or that case.

It is known that the symbol of the Christian faith is the Cross, therefore there is a prayer to it. Everyone knows that the Cross symbolizes the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for the sins committed by humanity. The sign of the cross means protection from the forces of darkness, so it is important not to forget to cross yourself when reading the evening rules.

When to read the words of the prayer for the coming sleep

Each person has his own regime, but it is worth considering that time on the church day is calculated differently. You can start reading the evening rules after three o'clock in the afternoon. People are also interested in what time in the evening they can do this, whether it is possible at night. The clergy recommend reading prayers for the coming sleep before 12 o'clock at night.

If a person attends evening services in a church, then the rules must be read out after its completion. You can read the sacred texts at home, take a prayer book with large print and slowly pronounce the phrases.

It is believed that one prayer, pronounced with feeling and understanding, can replace a dozen of those that were read hastily, and their deep meaning was not understood by a person.

It is very important for beginning Christians, when reading evening prayers, not to be distracted by extraneous thoughts, to be collected, to try to understand their essence, only if these conditions are met will spiritual benefit be obtained.

When you go to bed, say:
In Your hands, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Offering prayer words before going to bed is necessary for an Orthodox Christian to gain protection and support at night. From time immemorial, mothers asked the Lord for protection for their children, turning to him with prayers for the coming sleep.

Saints always hear sincere words appeal to them and strive to protect their charges and send them mercy.

Throughout Bright Week, instead of this rule, the hours of Holy Easter are read.

** From Easter to Ascension, instead of this prayer, the chorus and irmos of the 9th song of the Easter canon are read:

“The angel cried out with grace: Pure Virgin, rejoice! And again the river: Rejoice! Your Son is risen three days from the grave and raised up the dead; people, have fun! Shine, shine, new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is upon you. Rejoice now and be glad, O Zion. You, Pure One, show off, O Mother of God, about the rise of Your Nativity.”

I. Initial bows

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Stay a little, silently and then pray slowly with the fear of God, if possible, then with tears, firmly believing that “the Holy Spirit strengthens us in our weaknesses: for we do not know what to pray for, and how we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be expressed” (Rom. 8:26).

God, be merciful to me, a sinner (bow).

God, cleanse my sins and have mercy on me (bow).

Having created me, Lord, have mercy on me (bow).

Without the number of sinners. Lord, forgive me (bow).

My Lady, Most Holy Theotokos, save me, a sinner (bow).

Angel, my holy guardian, save me from all evil (bow).

Saint (name of your Saint), pray to God for me (bow).

II. Initial prayers

Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of Truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything. Treasure of good things and life to the Giver, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed One, our souls. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal; have mercy on us (thrice).

Note. During the period from Holy Easter to Pentecost, the prayer to the Holy Spirit - “Heavenly King” is not read. On the week of St. On Easter the entire Trisagion is not read, but is replaced by the troparion “Christ is risen. ” three times. Also, before the celebration of Easter, instead of “It is worthy to eat, as in truth,” the following is read or sung: “Shine, shine, new Jerusalem: for the glory of the Lord has risen upon you; rejoice now and be glad in Zion, but you, the Pure One, show off to the Mother of God, about the rise of Your Nativity.”

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us: Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name's sake.

Lord, have mercy (three times).

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and throughout the age of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be it your name, may your kingdom come; Thy will be done as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Come, let us worship our God the King (bow).

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, our King God (bow).

Come, let us bow and fall down to Christ Himself, the King and our God (bow).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone, and I have done evil before You; for you may be justified in all Your words, and be victorious, and never judge You.

Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. You have loved the truth; you have revealed to me the unknown and secret wisdom of Yours. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my hearing; humble bones will rejoice. Repel your face from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. God, create in me a pure heart, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation, and strengthen me with the Master’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed. O God, God of my salvation, my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness, O Lord, You have opened my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had wanted sacrifices, you would have given burnt offerings, but you would not have been pleased. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a contrite and humble heart, God will not despise. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering and the burnt offering: then they will lay the bullock on Your altar. (Psalm 50.)

1. I believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible.

2. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God. Who was born of the Father before all ages. Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were.

3. For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human.

4. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried.

5. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.

6. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father;

7. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end.

8. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who is with the Father and the Son, is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets.

Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord Lover of Mankind. Do good to those who do good. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petitions for salvation and eternal life: visit those who are infirm and grant healing. Manage the sea as well. For travelers, travel. Contribute to the Emperor. Grant forgiveness of sins to those who serve and forgive us. Have mercy on those who have commanded us unworthy to pray for them according to the greatness of Your mercy. Remember, Lord, our fathers and brothers who have fallen before us, and give them rest, where the light of Your face shines. Remember, Lord, our captive brothers, and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, us humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, and all Thy Saints, for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen (bow).

Memorial for the living

Save, Lord, and have mercy on my spiritual father (his name), and with his holy prayers forgive my sins (bow). Save, Lord, and have mercy on my parents (their names), brothers and sisters, and my relatives according to the flesh and all my neighbors and friends, and grant them Your peace and the most peaceful goodness (bow).

Save, Lord, and have mercy on those who hate and offend me and create misfortunes against me, and do not leave them to perish for me for the sake of a sinner (bow).

Hasten, Lord, to enlighten the ignorant of You (the pagans) with the light of Your Gospel, and blinded by destructive heresies and schism, and unite them to Your Holy Apostolic and Catholic Church (bow).

Remember, Lord, the souls of Your servants who have fallen asleep, my parents (their names) and all relatives in the flesh; and forgive them all sins, voluntary and involuntary, grant them the Kingdom and the communion of Thy eternal good things and Thy endless and blissful life of pleasure (bow).

Grant, Lord, remission of sins to all who have previously departed in faith and hope of resurrection to our fathers, brothers and sisters, and create for them eternal memory (three times).

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit! Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy (three times). Bless.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Thy Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and the saint (remember the Saint of this day) and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen. (three bows).

Note 1st. In the morning, without praying, do not start eating, drinking, or doing anything. Before starting any task, pray like this: “Lord, bless! In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen". At the end of the task, say: “Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee! Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and throughout the age of ages. Amen".

Before eating food, read: “Our Father.” to the end, then bless food and drink with the cross. (In the family, the eldest in the house blesses.) At the end of the meal (food), read “It is worthy to eat as truly. "to the end, because Holy Virgin Mary, through the birth of the Son of God, gave the whole world “true food and true drink” (John 6:55), i.e. Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Throughout the day, keep in your heart the shortest, but most saving prayer: “Lord, have mercy!”

Note 2. If you have an urgent task and you are very busy with work, or you are in weakness, then never read the rules hastily without due attention, do not anger God, and do not multiply your sins: it is better to read one prayer slowly, reverently, than several prayers hastily , hastily. Therefore, a very busy person should, with the blessing of the Venerable Martyr Macarius of Kanevsky, read one prayer - “Our Father. “If you have a little more time, then, with the blessing of St. Seraphim of Sarov miracle. - read “Our Father” three times, “Rejoice to the Virgin Mary” three times and “I Believe” once.

Note 3. If, on the contrary, you have quite a bit of free time, then do not spend it idle, because idleness is the mother of vices, but even if you were no longer capable of work due to illness or old age, fill the time with prayerful deeds, so that you will find great mercy from the Lord God.

Evening prayer for the coming sleep

Every Orthodox Christian must adhere to a certain prayer rule, performed daily: morning prayers are read in the morning, and in the evening it is necessary to read prayers for the coming sleep.

Why do you need to read prayers before going to bed?

There is a certain rhythm of prayer intended for monastics and spiritually experienced lay people.

But for those who have recently come to the Church and are just beginning their prayer journey, it is quite difficult to read it in its entirety. And it happens that unforeseen situations arise for the laity when there is too little opportunity and time for prayer.

In this case, it is better to read the short rule than to mindlessly and without reverence jabber the full text.

Often, confessors bless beginners to read several prayers, and then, after 10 days, add one prayer to the rule every day. Thus, the skill of prayer reading is formed gradually and naturally.

Important! Any prayer request will be supported by Heaven when a person directs his activities to serving God and people.

Evening prayers

In the evening, the laity reads a short rule - a prayer for the night before going to bed:

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; Perplexed by any answer, we offer this prayer to You as the Master of sin: have mercy on us.

Glory: Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You; Do not be angry with us, do not remember our iniquities, but look upon us now as if you are gracious, and deliver us from our enemies; For Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; all works are done by Thy hand, and we call on Thy name.

And now: Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who trust in You, so that we may not perish, but may be delivered from troubles by You: for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Eternal God and King of every creature, who has vouchsafed me even at this hour to come, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And grant me, Lord, to pass through this dream in peace at night, so that, rising from my humble bed, I will please Your most holy name all the days of my life, and will trample the fleshly and incorporeal enemies that fight me. And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through Thee I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure One and Blessed One.

Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all who have sinned this day, and deliver me from every wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that in no sin I will anger my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.

To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as having been delivered from the evil ones, let us write thanks to Thy servants, the Mother of God, but as having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ti; Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.

Glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may You save our souls.

I place all my trust in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your roof.

Virgin Mary, do not despise me, a sinner, who requires Your help and Your intercession, for my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Interpretation of individual prayers

  • Heavenly King.

In prayer, the Holy Spirit is called the King, because He, like God the Father and God the Son, rules the world and reigns in it. He is a comforter and still provides comfort to those who need it. He guides believers on the righteous path, which is why he is called the Spirit of Truth.

The petition is addressed to three hypostases Holy Trinity. The heavenly angels sing a great song before the throne of God. God the Father is the Holy God, God the Son is the Holy Almighty. This conversion is due to the victory of the Son over the devil and the destruction of hell. Throughout the prayer, a person asks for permission from sins, healing of spiritual infirmities for the sake of glorifying the Most Holy Trinity.

This is an appeal directly to the Almighty as the Father; we stand before Him as children before their mother and father. We affirm the omnipotence of God and His power, we beg to control human spiritual forces and direct them to the true path, so that after death they will be awarded the honor of being in the Kingdom of Heaven.

He is Good Spirit for every believer, determined by God Himself. Therefore, praying to Him in the evenings is simply necessary. It is he who will warn against committing sins, help to live holy and will protect the soul and body.

The prayer especially highlights the danger of attacks from bodily enemies (people pushing to commit sin) and incorporeal (spiritual passions).

Nuances of the evening rule

Most people have a question: is it possible to listen to Orthodox chants on audio recordings?

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul says that it does not matter what a person does, the main thing is that any of his work is done for the glory of God.

Prayer should begin before going to bed. Before starting to read the rule, it is recommended to thank God for everything that He has given throughout the day. You need to turn to Him with your mind and heart, realizing the meaning of every word spoken.

Advice! If the text is read in Church Slavonic, then you need to study its Russian translation.

In modern practice, the rule is supplemented by reading prayers for:

  • close and dear people
  • living and deceased;
  • about enemies;
  • virtues and about the whole world.

In a dream, a person is especially vulnerable to the devil’s army; he is visited by sinful thoughts and bad desires. Night in Christian understanding is considered a time of rampant demons. A person can receive information that can seduce his body and lead his soul into sin. Demons are very insidious; they can send nightmares in a dream.

This is why believers pray every day before going to bed.

Advice! Even when all life circumstances are going well, we must not forget about faith and the Heavenly Father, because human destinies are initially predetermined in Heaven. Therefore, it is necessary to turn to God before going to bed, and the next day will definitely turn out better than the previous one.

  1. It is useful to listen to the singing of the elders of Optina Hermitage. This men's monastic monastery is famous for its miracle workers who could and can foresee human destinies. The need to serve the Almighty is conveyed through their prayer songs and sets them on the righteous path.
  2. The Church has a positive attitude towards viewing Orthodox videos, but this material must be treated very carefully, and in the process of listening or watching it is recommended to put aside worldly activities.
  3. Church officials advise including the prayers of the Optina Elders as part of the evening rule. Their texts have been developed over centuries and each of their phrases carries the greatest wisdom, capable of clarifying the foundations of the Orthodox faith and understanding their full depth.

Prayer is the breath of the soul of an Orthodox person. He practically cannot control his sleep, and other life processes are difficult to control. Therefore, praying before going to bed is aimed at ensuring that the Creator participates in human life, otherwise He will not have the opportunity to help us.

Important! Offering prayer before going to bed means that an Orthodox Christian gains protection and support. In addition to their own protection, mothers beg God to protect their children and send them mercy.

Evening Orthodox prayers for bedtime. Evening prayers, read daily before going to bed. In evening prayer, a person thanks the Lord for a good day, meekly asks for a blessing on the coming sleep, and turns to repentance for unexpected or accidental sins committed by him throughout the day.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.
Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 1, St. Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Amen.

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ

To the Almighty, the Word of the Father, who is perfect himself, Jesus Christ, for the sake of Thy mercy, never leave me, Thy servant, but always rest in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to the sedition of the serpent, and do not leave me to the desires of Satan, for the seed of aphids is in me. Thou, O Lord God worshiped, the Holy King, Jesus Christ, preserve me as I sleep with an unflickering light, by Thy Holy Spirit, with whom Thou hast sanctified Thy disciples. Grant, O Lord, to me, Thy unworthy servant, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of reason of Thy Holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy passionless passion, preserve my thought with Thy humility, and uplift I am in time like Your praise. For Thou art glorified with Thy Beginningless Father and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of Truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Thy sinful servant, and forgive me the unworthy, and forgive me all that I have sinned today like a man, and moreover, not like a man, but also worse than cattle, my free sins and involuntary, driven and unknown: those who are evil from youth and science, and those who are evil from impudence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or whom I will reproach; or slandered someone with my anger, or saddened someone, or became angry about something; either he lied, or he slept in vain, or he came to me as a beggar and despised him; or made my brother sad, or married, or whom I condemned; or became proud, or became proud, or became angry; or standing in prayer, my mind is moved by the wickedness of this world, or thoughts of corruption; either overeated, or drunk, or laughing madly; either I thought evil, or saw someone else’s kindness, and my heart was wounded by it; or dissimilar verbs, or laughed at my brother’s sin, but mine are countless sins; Either I didn’t pray for the sake of it, or I didn’t remember what other evil things I did, because I did more and more of these things. Have mercy on me, my Creator Master, Thy sad and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of Mankind, so that I may lie down in peace, sleep and rest, the prodigal, sinful and damned one, and I will bow and sing , and I will glorify Your most honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and ever and forever. Amen.

Prayer 4, Saint Macarius the Great

What will I bring to You, or what will I reward to You, O most gifted Immortal King, generous and philanthropic Lord, since you were lazy in pleasing me, and did nothing good, you brought the conversion and salvation of my soul to the end of this day? Be merciful to me, a sinner and naked of every good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and take away from me all the evil thoughts of this visible life. Forgive my sins, the only Sinless One, even those who have sinned this day, in knowledge and ignorance, in word, and deed, and thought, and with all my feelings. You Yourself, covering me, save me from every opposing situation with Your Divine power, and ineffable love for mankind, and strength. Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Deign, O Lord, to deliver me from the snare of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and overshadow me with the light of Your face, when You come in glory, and make me sleep without condemnation now, and keep the thoughts of Your servant without dreaming, and untroubled, and all the work of Satan take me away from me, and enlighten the intelligent eyes of my heart, so that I may not sleep into death. And send me an Angel of peace, guardian and mentor of my soul and body, that he may deliver me from my enemies; Yes, rising from my bed, I will bring you prayers of gratitude. Yes, Lord, hear me, your sinful and wretched servant, with your will and conscience; grant that I have risen to learn from Thy words, and the despondency of demons is driven away from me, to be made by Thy Angels; may I bless Your holy name, and glorify, and glorify the Most Pure Mother of God Mary, Who hast given us sinners intercession, and accept this one praying for us; We see that He imitates Your love for mankind, and never ceases to pray. By that intercession, and the sign of the Honest Cross, and for the sake of all Thy saints, keep my poor soul, Jesus Christ our God, for Thou art holy and glorified forever. Amen.

Prayer 5

Lord our God, who have sinned in these days in word, deed and thought, as He is Good and Lover of Mankind, forgive me. Grant me a peaceful and serene sleep. Send Your guardian angel, covering and keeping me from all evil, for You are the guardian of our souls and bodies, and we send glory to You, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 6

Lord our God, in the worthlessness of faith, and we call upon His name above every name, grant us, who are going to sleep, a weakening of soul and body, and keep us from all dreams and dark pleasures except; restrain the desire of passions, extinguish the kindling of bodily rebellion. Grant us to live chastely in deeds and words; Yes, a virtuous life is receptive, Your promised good things will not fall away, for Blessed are You forever. Amen.

Prayer 8thOur Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Your most honorable Mother, and Your disembodied Angels, Your Prophet and Forerunner and Baptist, the God-speaking Apostles, the bright and victorious martyrs, the reverend and God-bearing fathers, and all the saints through the prayers, deliver me from my present demonic situation. To her, my Lord and Creator, do not want the death of a sinner, but as if he were converted and live, grant me conversion, the accursed and unworthy; take me away from the mouth of the destructive serpent, who yawns to devour me and bring me to hell alive. To her, my Lord, is my consolation, Who for the sake of the accursed one has clothed himself in corruptible flesh, pluck me from accursedness, and grant consolation to my more accursed soul. Plant in my heart to do Thy commandments, and forsake evil deeds, and receive Thy blessedness: for in Thee, O Lord, have I trusted, save me.

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter of Studium

To Thee, Most Pure Mother of God, I fall down and pray: Consider, O Queen, how I continually sin and anger Thy Son and my God, and many times when I repent, I find myself lying before God, and I repent in trembling: will the Lord strike me down, and hour by hour I do the same again? ; I pray to this leader, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, to have mercy, strengthen me, and grant me good works. Believe me, my Lady Theotokos, for the Imam is by no means in hatred of my evil deeds, and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God; But we do not know, Most Pure Lady, from where I hate, I love, but I transgress what is good. Do not allow, O Most Pure One, my will to be fulfilled, for it is not pleasing, but may the will of Thy Son and my God be done: may He save me, and enlighten me, and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that I may cease from here from filthiness, and so on may I live as commanded Your Son, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, with His Originless Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 10, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through You I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure and Blessed.

Prayer 11, to the Holy Guardian Angel

Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all who have sinned this day, and deliver me from every wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that in no sin I will anger my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.

Kontakion to the Mother of God

Prayer of Saint Ioannikios

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.
It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.
Glory, and now: Lord, have mercy. (Thrice)
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Prayer of Saint John of Damascus

Lord, Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed, or will you still enlighten my damned soul during the day? For seven the grave lies ahead, for seven the death awaits. I fear Your judgment, O Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil: I always anger You, the Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the Heavenly powers, and my holy Guardian Angel. We know, Lord, that I am unworthy of Your love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, whether I want it or not, save me. Even if you save a righteous man, nothing great; and even if you have mercy on a pure person, nothing is marvelous: you are worthy of the essence of Your mercy. But surprise me, a sinner, with Thy mercy: for this show Thy love for mankind, so that my malice may not overcome Thy unspeakable goodness and mercy: and as you wish, arrange a thing for me.
Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, so that not when I fall asleep into death, and not when my enemy says: “Let us be strong against him.”
Glory: Be the protector of my soul, O God, as I walk in the midst of many snares; deliver me from them and save me, O Blessed One, as a Lover of Mankind.
And now: Glorious Mother of God, and the most holy Angel, let us silently sing with our hearts and lips, confessing this Mother of God as truly giving birth to God incarnate for us, and praying unceasingly for our souls.

Mark yourself with a cross and say a prayer to the Honest Cross:

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence. As smoke disappears, let them disappear; just as wax melts in the face of fire, so let demons perish in the face of those who love God and sign the sign of the cross, and say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honorable One and Life-giving Cross Lord, drive away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled upon the power of the devil, and gave us His Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. O Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or briefly: Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Weaken, forsake, forgive, O God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and in ignorance, even in days and in nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us everything, for it is good and Lover of Humanity.

Prayer

Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord Lover of Mankind. Do good to those who do good. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petitions for salvation and eternal life. Visit those who are infirm and grant healing. Manage the sea as well. For travelers, travel. Grant forgiveness of sins to those who serve and forgive us. Have mercy on those who have commanded us unworthy to pray for them according to Your great mercy. Remember, Lord, our fathers and brothers who have fallen before us, and give them rest, where the light of Your face shines. Remember, Lord, our captive brothers and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, us, humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints: for blessed art thou unto the ages of ages. . Amen.

Everyday confession of sins

I confess to You, Lord my God and Creator, in the One Holy Trinity, glorified and worshiped, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, all my sins, which I have committed all the days of my life, and for every hour, both now and in days gone by. and nights, by deed, by word, by thought, by gluttony, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, bickering, disobedience, slander, condemnation, neglect, pride, avarice, theft, unspeaking, foulness, money-grubbing, jealousy, envy, anger, memory malice , hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, both mental and physical, in the image of my God and Creator I have angered You, and my neighbor for being untruthful: regretting these, I blame myself for You, my God I imagine, and I have the will to repent: then, Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to Thee: forgive me by Thy mercy for my sins, and forgive me from all these things that are said before Thee, for Thou art Good and Lover of mankind.

When you go to bed, say:

In Your hands, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Prayer for everyone Orthodox Christian– there is a moment of communication with Heavenly Father. Having cried out in prayerful humility to the Almighty, we open our hearts to Him, so that He fills it with His light and goodness. Prayer before going to bed is one of the most important rituals, which not only pays tribute to the Lord, but also allows us to analyze, look back on the past day and ask the Almighty for protection from a bad dream - to calm the soul for the coming sleep.

The Holy Scripture says that prayer is the duty of every Christian before God. Pray when you are awake, pray when going to bed or starting any business, and teach your child the same, for our life is a gift from the Creator, for which he asks only that small fraction. Morning and evening prayer is the duty of a pious layman - this is a rule in which there is a source of wisdom.

Optina wise elders They commanded every baptized Orthodox Christian - prayer should not be tiresome and take a lot of time, but it is our duty before the Almighty and His Son Jesus. To a chapter from the Gospel, the Apostle, and one kathisma from the Psalter, add a prayer from the heart - and your duty as a Christian is fulfilled, and the Lord, being touched, will grant you his mercy and blessing.

  • Morning prayer serves to awaken the soul, so that it remembers throughout the day - God is near, He takes care of His children. Every business is conceived with the help of the Almighty and under his vigilant Eye. Nothing and no one can hide from the Lord, who is the essence of everything. By praising the Heavenly King in the morning, we show that we need His mercy and blessing all day long, we show our humility and zeal for His glory.
  • Nighttime prayer is a moment to look back. Admit your mistakes and ask for forgiveness for any sins. Ask God to remove the burden of what you have done from your soul, to calm your heart from melancholy, anxiety and torment - who, if not He, will listen to you and guide you on the path of truth. Only He has the power to free you from fear, give hope, guide and advise, restoring peace and serenity to sleep.

By opening the prayer book, you can glean a lot of wisdom, which was given by the Almighty and came down by the Holy Spirit to help us in troubles and torment. Including, there is a place for prayers that call on the Holy Saints as intercessors - they are given the power to ask God for you, begging for help. Involve your child in prayer every time you yourself pay tribute to the Almighty.

This small sacrifice from you will be enough to live under His protection, not knowing sorrow during the day and resting without fear at night. And if in the morning it is considered reasonable to devote a little more time to prayer, so that the blessing of the Lord accompanies the whole day, then, when going to bed, you can use short prayers. It is customary to say words of thanksgiving for the past day and mention your Guardian Angel for his protection, asking for guidance in life. The child is also introduced to the same thing, as a pure soul, so that the Lord always has a place in his heart.

Prayer is the antidote to nightmares

Of course, Orthodox Christians for the most part understand the power of the word of prayer. But it would not be amiss to remind you that prayer is also an excellent cure for any trouble. Nightmare- these are the machinations of demons who seek to torment the human soul, depriving them of peace. They force people to turn to sorcerers for salvation, covering their minds with a veil, directing them in a sinful direction.

However, there is no better medicine than prayer, which will restore peace and serenity to sleep. You just need to let Jesus and the Holy Spirit into your heart and read a few prayers for the future to sleep.

By turning to the Heavenly King for the salvation of our souls and the peace of our sleep, we will find peace and bliss that night. The Almighty, by his will, will protect his servant from the demons of fear that interfere with our rest at night.

  • Do not neglect a candle or lamp - this is a ray of burning hope. The light that breaks through the darkness to God.
  • “Our Father,” read before bedtime, will strengthen your faith in the Almighty and pay tribute to him from the Christian heart.
  • If nightmares bother you too much, then when going to bed, supplement your prayer reading with psalms for calm and protection from demons. Their healing power is great and is recognized even by the Holy Synod of the Holy Orthodox Church.
  • If nightmares torture a child, then prayer for him restful sleep- the duty of every parent. Do not leave your child alone with his fears - show him the way to salvation in the Almighty.
  • Keep a prayer book at hand - this is a storehouse of wisdom for every everyday occasion. He will reveal to you great universal love and mercy.
  • You can read a prayer for bedtime while in bed. The Lord is merciful and does not consider this sinful, for evening vigils take place after a day of work. However, try, if possible, to find strength and say the prayer in the appropriate way - in the humble posture of a good Christian.

Prayer for the coming sleep

“Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, have mercy on me and have mercy on me, Your sinful servant, and release me to the unworthy, and forgive all that You have sinned today as a man. Why, not like a man, but also worse than cattle, my free sins and involuntary, known and unknown: those who are evil from youth and science, and those who are from insolence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or reproach someone; or slandered someone with my anger, or made me sad, or became angry about something; either he lied, or he slept in vain, or he came to me as a beggar and despised him; or I made my brother sad, or I got married, or I condemned someone; or became proud, or became proud, or became angry; or I stand in prayer, my mind is moved by the wickedness of this world, or the corruption of my thoughts; or got too drunk, or got drunk, or laughed madly; either I had evil thoughts, or I saw someone else’s kindness, and my heart was wounded by it; or dissimilar to the verbs, or they laughed at my brother’s sin, but mine is a countless sin; Or I didn’t remember about prayer, or I don’t remember what other evil things I did, because I did everything and more than these. Have mercy on me, my Creator Master, Thy despondent and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of Mankind, so that I may lie down in peace, sleep and rest, O prodigal sinner. I am the accursed and accursed one, and I will worship and sing , and I will glorify Your most honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and ever and unto ages. Amen"

Guardian Angel will protect your dreams

Great power has a prayer to the Guardian Angel. He is our patron in all earthly affairs. Given over to his care human soul, so that he would instruct her in the love of God and take care of her on the path of life. By turning to him in prayer, going to sleep, we place our bodies and consciousness under his protection, so that he will be vigilant about our safety.

It is customary to mention the Guardian Angel every time before going to bed and thank him for the past day, which he arranged for us with his efforts. The text of the prayer to the Angel is quite simple and one of the very first in our lives. Every child is taught this prayer from a young age, so that the child knows that the Guardian always stands behind him and watches for good.

  • Don’t forget one condition - in order to appeal to the salvation of the child’s soul, he must be baptized. Otherwise, the child does not have his own Angel, who is given to us by God to serve.
  • Don’t be lazy and read the prayer-address to the Heavenly Guardian together with your child, wishing both of you a good sleep.

Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angel

“To the Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and patron of my soul and body, forgive me in all respects that I have sinned this day, and deliver me from all the wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that I may not commit any sin. I praise my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen"

The Virgin Mary - patroness of mother and child

Every mother with a small child needs to take her responsibilities responsibly. In order to find a restful sleep for yourself and your baby, pray to the Mother of God - she is the protection and merciful patroness of the child and his mother.

When covering your child in the crib, read over him any short canonical prayers that the prayer book contains. Turning to the Queen of Heaven, call goodness into the child’s sleep, so that his uniform sniffling will not be overshadowed by anything and will be the subject of maternal tenderness, for the Mother of God will comfort him in the night. There is no better care from a mother for a child than a blessing for sleep.

  1. Rejoice, Virgin Mary.
  2. To the Deliverer.
  3. The good of the King Good Mother.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

“Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Your Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Your prayers guide me to good deeds May I pass the rest of my life without blemish and through You may I find heaven, O Virgin Mary, one Pure and Blessed."

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos the Deliverer

“Oh, Mother of God, our help and protection, whenever we ask, be our deliverer, we trust in You and always call upon You with all our souls: have mercy and help, have pity and deliver, incline Your ear and accept our sorrowful and tearful prayers, and as you wish , calm and rejoice us, who love your Beginningless Son and our God. Amen"

Conspiracy against anxiety in a dream

Orthodox Church All pagan chants and whispers are rejected, as the work of demons. Looking for protection for your sleep from worries, it is customary to turn to the word of God in a prayer book. However, if dreams plague you with nightmares, or insomnia does not provide rest after hard work, then you can use a spell for sound sleep, in which there is a mention of the Name of the Almighty or His Holy Saints.

Such conspiracies do not occur from witchcraft or magic powers, but are born from a bright soul, given by God. Often, such conspiracies are words spoken in prayer to those who are pure in heart, and their prayer was heard by the Lord and received what they asked for as a reward.

This spell encourages blissful sleep and gives peace of mind at night. They read it three times and calmly go to bed, for the Lord will arrange everything and give you serene rest.

“In the name of our Most Holy Lord I call upon the Power of Heaven!

To me, saviors and holy Baptists,

Apply mercy to the soul, intercede for it!

Have mercy on me, and grant me a righteous sleep,

Take the tempters and seducers away from me,

Destroy the demonic tribe in the night.

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen"

The Psalter is a storehouse of wisdom and a helper for the soul

Whenever mental anguish causes significant suffering, turn to the word of God. The Psalter is that part of the Bible that gives help in any everyday adversity or helps in healing from a heavy burden on the heart.

Psalms can be either an independent prayer or act in addition to other canonical prayers. For those who are looking for peace at night and respite from the worries of the day, the Psalter provides several saving songs.

  • Psalm 90 – protection from demons. To be read by those who are plagued by nightmares and fears.
  • Psalm 70 – for finding mercy and peace from the Holy Spirit.
  • Psalm 65 - in protection from suffering in the soul, so that at night a person is not tormented by insomnia.
  • Psalm 8 – from the fears of a child in a dream.
  • Psalm 116 is about keeping the Christian soul at night in peace and serenity.

May the Lord grant you tenderness and grace in your dreams, and may all fears go away. Communicating in prayer with By Heavenly Forces, you enlist their support when your soul and body rest. Angels and Cherubim will be favored from above to guard your sleep from the invasion of all evil spirits and the demonic tribe.

Before we fall asleep, we think about how our day went. And everything would be fine if we just thought. But, unfortunately, people often cannot fall asleep until the morning, literally going crazy from the attacks that their own thoughts create. Christians are practically free from many such things, and in this they are helped by a correct lifestyle and evening prayer before going to bed. This is why it is so important to turn to the All-Holy Trinity before going to bed. In order for sleep to pass easily, you should definitely talk to the Creator, protecting yourself from all kinds of internal and external storms. And both material and spiritual.

Why are evening prayers needed?

Every Christian is, in fact, a warrior who has stood up to fight for light, love and truth in his soul, as well as for his destiny in eternal life, which will come with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of dead bodies.

The enemy of the human race is the devil, who, according to Sacred Tradition (the history of mankind, which is partially transmitted from mouth to mouth), was immediately against God creating anyone other than Angels, because these spiritual beings already possessed all the virtues and enormous opportunities . And animals were already created by the Creator who were carnal creatures. The proud star was perplexed, why add another flesh-bearing creature, an animal - a person?

But the Lord wanted to create a creation that would unite in itself all the rest of his creations - both spiritual and material. Therefore, another creature appeared, angels in essence, but having their own material expression - people.

The first man, Adam, was that first fruitful angel, the crown of creation, in which God united the practically incompatible - spirit and matter, and “made friends” between heaven and earth. The devil was overcome with jealousy and offended that God did not take his opinion into account, but at the same time realized how dear the person was to God. And he decided to take revenge. Since the Creator himself he couldn't do any harm, former angel decided to strike at God's beloved creation.

According to Tradition(and partly Scripture), God visited Adam at noon in paradise and taught him the secrets of the Universe. The first man alone, and then together with his woman Eve, quickly comprehended science. Adam penetrated into the essence of many things and therefore was able to give names to animals in accordance with God's plan for each of them. The devil realized that soon people would develop in such a way that they would become serious contenders in the arena of championship, which existed only in the minds of an ordinary angel who had fallen and degenerated into a sadist. Those Angels who remained with God and His truth only rejoiced at their new brother and sister, joyfully accepting new members of the huge family.

The devil decided to “seize the day” while the fallen and crippled spirits still remain smarter and more experienced than the simple-minded and pure people, so attached to the Father that they sacredly observe the prohibition against eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Then Satan, as is known, having entered the body of the serpent, crawled up to Eve, as if she were younger and inexperienced, and, having slandered the Creator that He did not allow eating from the Tree, because He was allegedly afraid that people would become like Him, he persuaded Eve to taste the fruit.

At that moment, when the youngest succumbed to cunning and distorted lies, Satan practically spiritually killed us, people: the fruit from the Tree gave such consequences that the first flesh-bearing angels were unable to live according to God and were deprived of heavenly bliss. He also killed us physically - through sin and death came to us, that is, the inability of the body to live forever. Therefore we call the devil, who was once one of the most beautiful and luminous angels, whom his fellows called Lucifer - Morning Star:

  • the father of all lies,
  • enemy of the human race,
  • murderer
  • misanthrope, etc.

But the loving Heavenly Father did not allow his beloved creation to perish, which, like the Angels, was created eternal. People continued to grow, multiply and develop, but in different conditions, going through the harsh school of life on earth, where we were given a choice: we should continue to live with God or without Him.

On the path of each of us, regardless of faith and lifestyle, spiritual enemies who hate us have stood, stand and will stand in fierce malice, who will resort to any lie just to seduce us, subjugate us, distract us from Heavenly Father. It is known that Satan “boasted” that he would subjugate every single one of us and rule over us in hell.

God created hell, a specially designated place from which He withdrew His active participation and grace so that those who do not want to be with Him may have such an opportunity. Michael the Archangel threw the devil there, and with him those who went over to the side of the liar and the proud went there.

And now the demons want only one thing: to drag away with them as much as possible more people to mock them for all eternity and take revenge for that God still loves man, and also for the sake of salvation and life together with him in the Kingdom of Heaven, in paradise, he was crucified for us, and even conquered death!

So is it really impossible for us to get rid of this spiritual abomination? Can. Jesus said: “this generation,” that is, demons and demons, are cast out “by prayer and fasting.” That is why everyone who has decided to resist and return to eternal life and love with God should often pay attention to their Parent - the Heavenly Father - and communicate with Him and pray. Prayer at night before going to bed will protect you from demonic trials (temptations) and help in various needs.

Brief evening prayer rule

For strong defense The holy fathers, who were able to defeat the devil and gain the constant presence of God in their souls, based on their experience, compiled several prayer rules. One of them is the Midnight Office. But for a modern person living in a crazy age of speed and loads, it is too heavy and long.

Therefore, now this midnight rule, consisting of prayers and reading the psalms of David, remains only in monastic life, and occasionally in secular life. And for the laity it was replaced by an abbreviated rule - prayers for the coming sleep. Full ancient prayers Now they are being read by monks or Old Believers who did not recognize the innovations and relaxations.

Relatively new evening rule consists of 10 prayers, which are addressed to each hypostasis of the Trinity:

  • the first prayer is dedicated to the Father - the Creator of all living things,
  • the second - to His Son and our Savior, thanks to whom man has the opportunity to return to his “first grace”,
  • the third - to the Holy Spirit, the third hypostasis of God.

The rule also includes prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos, the Guardian Angel, and ends with the obligatory confession of sins to one’s Creator. Last phrase- this is sending your spirit to God and asking him to preserve and preserve it while the one praying remains in sleep.

This whole rule is aimed at nightly preparation person to possible death- transition to spiritual world and waiting in an individually prepared spiritual space for the Second Coming of Jesus and the Last (Last) Judgment, which will decide the fate of man in eternity. This is evidenced by the meek, contrite prayer of St. John of Damascus, read by attentive worshipers with special trepidation.

It begins with the words “Master Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed?” It encourages each person to renounce earthly values and encourages them to remember their heavenly homeland, delicately reminding them that life is finite and God will definitely ask a person what he has decided: to return to “first grace” and prefer life with God in paradise, or choose a sinful life, and then hell and its inhabitants will be closer in state to him.

The Christian also asks in his conversation with God, “those who hate and offend” forgive him. God will judge a Christian not only by his prayers and sincere repentance of sins, but also by whether he prayed for his enemies.

An even more abbreviated prayer rule

Unfortunately, the modern realities of life are such that for the average Christian even this abbreviated rule, in comparison with the Midnight Office, turns out to be beyond his strength. There is no officially recognized church abbreviation of the already short rule. However, there are some options for reductions and even complete replacements posted online. How beneficial this replacement is to the soul remains an open question. But in a situation where the spiritual potential of a Christian can be expressed by the words “either this way or not at all,” it can be used as a huge assumption. But on one condition - there must be a blessing from the priest.

Blessing will allow you not to indulge in selfishness and pride, but to act out of obedience, and this is one of the virtues that pleases God.

There are at least two options:

  • Seraphim's rule
  • The evening rule, reduced to several prayers.

Seraphim's rule (prayer for the coming sleep, short 3 strong)

This is a short rule that is blessed Venerable Seraphim Sarovsky to people who, not due to laziness, but due to the severity of their work, did not have the opportunity to read the full version every day.

It includes three prayers:

  • Our Father (read three times)
  • Rejoice to the Virgin Mary (read three times),
  • The Creed (“I Believe”) is read once.

Abbreviated everyday rule

Schematically it looks like this:

It is also worth noting that the prayers are written, albeit in Russian letters, but in Church Slavonic, so some words may be incomprehensible. In this case, it is necessary to turn to the interpretation of these words so that the conversation with God does not turn into the reading of some kind of spells. This is a godly thing. Beloved by God David, great-grandfather Holy Mother of God, writes in his psalms as an instruction to believers, “sing to God, sing wisely,” that is, understand what you say, understand.

Miracles of those who pray at night

To strengthen faith and to encourage prayerful deeds, we will give several examples of what happens when a person includes in his life a nightly conversation with the Heavenly Father.

Getting rid of bad thoughts and images

A certain woman was often tormented by bad thoughts: they constantly crawled into her head when she was already going to bed. Her imagination painted her various unpleasant pictures, indecent scenes. This soon developed into big problem. Realizing that she couldn’t cope on her own, she went to church for confession. The priest, after listening, said that it was the demons who forced her to watch and listen to all these things, so that she would accept them as her own and thereby sin by applying her will and her choice to them. The servant of God recommended that she read prayers for the coming sleep every evening. Imperceptibly the temptations stopped, as if they had never existed.

Deliverance from demonic dreams

Demons, in order to confuse and subjugate a person, often try to intimidate him. To do this they are looking for weak sides, passions or fears and begin to “inflate” them. This is what happened to one man who experienced mystical fears - he was afraid that the vivid dreams that he had almost every night were actually prophetic. Fear was fueled by the fact that some episodes from dreams actually came true, and things began to happen that could well be taken as signs, indications of possible events.

All this finally drove the impressionable person into a corner. Conversations with a psychologist did not bring any lasting effect, and the man went to church for confession, realizing that this was the last resort. The priest blessed him to read the evening rule. The man soon noted that ambiguous dreams and events that could be taken as signs or portents began to recede, and he himself stopped taking much of this seriously, focusing on more important things in his life, including the spiritual.

God's help to a praying widow

A certain young woman was widowed early and was left alone with a young child in her arms. In horror, she went to one spiritual person, old man, in Holy place, ask how she should live next. He told her not to lose heart, to live on, explained that her husband was alive and well, that only the “clothing” of his soul had been lost, but his personality had been preserved. He ordered me to treat my spouse as if he had simply gone “on a long business trip” and blessed me to pray every morning and evening according to the rules established by the Church, as well as to begin receiving Communion every 2 weeks.

The frightened woman, who tried her best to carry out the priest’s blessing, noted that every day she had support from above. She succeeded in absolutely every task (and a lot of them piled up after her husband left), the Lord arranged for her cash payments and part-time work, the baby was quickly accepted into kindergarten. As a result, she thanks the Lord every day for his help, support and love, for the fact that she and the baby do not need anything, and prays for her beloved husband, just as she did during his earthly life.

One believing woman from a neighboring church invited her to go together to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. On the way, they read Orthodox morning and night prayers together, stopping for this in convenient places. In the monastery they prayed together for their departed spouse and they gave forty for him. The next night, the widow dreamed of her beloved husband, who was standing in line for some spiritual rewards in a certain place, like a small temple. The dream began from the moment her husband approaches the sacred person and receives a certain reward from his hands.
