What is a hybrid slot? How to put two SIM cards and microSD in one slot

Samsung decided to listen to the opinions of its fans and returned memory card support to the new flagship devices Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. However, she did this using a hybrid slot, as has become fashionable in Lately. This means that the user must choose whether to use 2 SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSD card in the smartphone. Fortunately, there were craftsmen who discovered that the contacts of the second SIM and the contacts of the memory card are in different places and managed to combine business with pleasure and organize the simultaneous operation of two SIM and microSD cards. And if you have decided to become the owner of a new device (or have already become the owner), despite all its minor disadvantages, then this article is for you. We are publishing a translation of instructions with detailed comments on installing two SIM cards and a memory card in the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

Denial of responsibility:
You do all the manipulations listed below only at your own peril and risk. Neither the author nor anyone else is responsible for your actions or for any damage caused. There is a high probability of damaging the SIM card microchip, and to a lesser extent, the microSD memory card. Also, when the smartphone heats up, there is a danger of this structure coming off, and in this case problems may arise when removing the tray. It is quite possible that in order to get it you will have to contact service center. In this case, the device is removed from warranty.

So, if you are aware of all the risks listed, then to continue you will need the following devices:

  • SIM card in Nano format (because it is easier to cut and “disassemble”)
  • Memory card microSD format
  • Lighter
  • Scissors, blade or any other sharp object
  • Thin double-sided tape (preferred) or super glue
  • A little free time, patience, a head on your shoulders and straight arms

To install two SIM cards and a memory card at the same time in a Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, you need to:

  • Determine the correct position of the SIM card
First, you will need to determine the correct position of the SIM card in the tray. Cards from different operators may have different contact configurations. The author of the original instructions carried out operations on SIM cards of U Mobile and Maxis operators (Malaysia). Typically, all SIM cards have a special key on one side (cut corner).
  • Detach the SIM card chip from the base
Any SIM card consists of a plastic base and a microchip with a contact pad glued to it. Gently heat the SIM card with opposite side(where the plastic is). This may take from 30 seconds to 1 minute. Then carefully separate the chip with the contact pad from the base. It is recommended to use a sharp object (scissors, knife, blade, etc.) as an auxiliary tool. After this, the chip must be cleaned of any remaining glue or plastic.
If everything went smoothly and you did not have to change the SIM card, then you can consider half the journey completed.

  • Trim the SIM card microchip
Now you need to carefully cut the contact pad of the SIM card to fit on the memory card. Usually you need to shorten it by 1-2 mm on each side (as in the photo).

  • Secure SIM card to microSD
This can be done using double-sided tape (in which case the memory card can be easily (more or less) “freed”) or super glue (this option is less preferable, since if you damage the SIM card chip, then separate it from the memory card will be quite difficult or even impossible). The first step was provided for correct placement. In addition, make sure that the corner of the SIM card microchip is aligned as shown in the image (circled in red).

  • Place the finished structure in the tray
Now all that remains is to place the genetically modified microSD card into the tray, and the tray itself into the smartphone.

Finally, you need to check that all actions have been performed correctly. If everything is done correctly, the Galaxy S7 will “see” two SIM cards and a microSD memory card. It will look something like this:

It is also worth noting that the method described above is suitable for all smartphones with the same hybrid SIM card tray. In particular, Meizu Pro 5 owners have a similar experience.

Many modern phones are designed with a compromise - they accept two SIM cards or one and a MicroSD flash drive.

The Chinese and Koreans began to use this, although users did not successfully accept this trick, and there are reasons for this.

Inexpensive smartphones have very little memory, therefore, you have to increase the resource with SD flash drives.

Operators, in turn, have different tariffs: in some, calls are almost free within the country, in others, international ones.

Having two SIM cards is very convenient, but constantly changing them is extremely annoying, if, in addition, to open the slot you need a key, which you almost never have at hand at a crucial moment.

What should I do? There is a solution - to deplete the SIM card and MicroSD flash drive together into one object. But if you take on such a task, be careful - this is jewelry work.

NOTE! These lines were added a year later. Now there is a more reliable and quick way combine a SIM card and a flash drive in one slot. .

Instructions - how to simultaneously install a nano sim/microsd into a hybrid slot

The trick of SIM cards and flash drives in the same slot at the same time is not difficult to do. Below I will try to describe step by step and draw attention to the mistakes that others have already made.

A flash drive with a SIM card in one slot or sim + sd is available only for devices that have a hybrid slot - a universal nano sim+nano sim / sim+microsd slot.

For this purpose you need a nano SIM card, micro SD, scissors, glue, hot water or another heater and sandpaper.

The first step is to complete disassembly SIM cards using heating or hot water to detach the microchip from the plastic.

This is necessary for a little deception in order to insert a SIM card and micro SD at the same time. This is the only way to eliminate this drawback, which the manufacturer considers a convenience.

NOTE: The steps below may lead to irreparable damage to the SIM card, and such an operation is illegal and all the blame lies with you.

So, we start with a heat source - we warm up the SIM card, or rather its plastic. This material has a fairly low heat resistance and begins to deform quite quickly.

The only thing that is important to us is that the plastic “let go” of the chip, which is glued to the plastic case, so after heating, we carefully try to pull off the chip (you can use, for example, thin tweezers).

If the operation was successful, then you should have an item like the one below in the picture.

If you are met with failure, damage appears, then it’s time to run to the service for a new SIM card, and those who are doing well may consider that 50% of the work has already been done.

Then use fine sandpaper to lightly sand the removed material. This step is the most dangerous in the entire operation.

It needs to be made as thin as possible (otherwise there may be problems with opening the tray), but so as not to damage the chip and connections.

It becomes soft when exposed to temperature, but quickly hardens when cooled. Next, you need to determine the correct position of the chip. It should be the model of the second SIM card.

NOTE: when you glue (you can use double-sided tape) the chip onto a micro SD flash drive, make sure that their contacts do not touch (you can trim them minimally around 2 mm.)

The contacts can even be insulated, for example, with paint. The chip must be held securely; if it slides, the pairing may be broken.

If the attempt is successful, try inserting the “kit” into the phone, if you have not already done so, and check the functionality of both “objects”.

Happened! Are you happy with two SIM cards and an SD flash drive? If yes, then congratulations, just don’t forget to share this trick with your friends.

NOTE: you have the right to use your own methods for peeling off, adjusting and gluing the chip. There is no such thing as a manual from the manufacturer in nature - all these are the works of enthusiasts.

Perhaps you have your own successful experiment or method? Why not? There are a lot of smart people.

If yes, then continue this post in the comment form below. I’m sure many will thank you, just mention your name. Good luck.

Increasingly, manufacturers of many smartphones have begun to use a hybrid slot. You can insert a SIM card with microSD or just two SIM cards. But what if you need to use both SIMs together with a flash drive, because sometimes the built-in memory is not enough? Let's look at what a SIM flash drive is and how you can improve the hybrid slot using the Meizu m2 mini as an example.

What is a SIM flash drive and how does it work?

Initially, hybrid slots began to be produced by Huawei and they took root in almost all Asian countries. Naturally, users were not at all happy with the fact that they had to give up a second SIM card or additional memory, so someone took a chance and came up with a SIM flash drive.

This is a completely homemade method with which we will get 2 working SIM cards and a flash drive at the same time. The result is certainly worth it, especially for those who don't want to carry a lot of phones in their pockets. I recommend practicing on an old SIM card, because there is a high probability of damaging it.

You perform all actions at your own peril and risk!

What you will need: 2 SIM cards and a flash drive, and what else?

  • Hybrid slot
  • 2 Nano-SIM
  • MicroSD memory card
  • Marker
  • Stationery knife
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Superglue gel or double-sided tape
  • Small container with boiling water\fire (candle)
  • Sandpaper

How to make a flash drive from a SIM card?

1. We try the SIM card on the tray and make marks with a marker (or knife) so that it is clear where the contacts of the SIM receiver are. We mark on the contact group of the SIM card where the cut corner is located.

2. Now you can place the SIM card in a previously prepared container and pour boiling water over it. We wait a while until the plastic on the SIM card becomes soft. We take out the hot SIM card with tweezers and carefully, slowly, separate the contact group with the chip from the plastic. You can also take the SIM card with tweezers and hold the card over the fire for a few seconds until the plastic softens. Then we very carefully separate the contact group with the chip from the plastic. We do everything very carefully so as not to damage the chip.

3. If possible, we check the integrity of the separated SIM card on the old phone, so as not to stick it to the memory card in vain and then not get upset. If everything works, we move on.

4. Place the memory card in the SIM tray and try on the divided SIM card according to the pre-marked marks. We check whether the card fits well in the place it needs. For achievement desired result It is allowed to trim the contact group of the SIM card by 1-2 mm, no more.

5. Check again!

6. Apply a little glue and glue the SIM card to the memory card according to the marks.

7. Check the operation on the smartphone.

Remember: The more difficult it is to put the tray in place, the higher the likelihood that it will not be accessible.

Answers to frequently asked questions

The tray either fits in hard or does not fit into place at all

Your design is too thick. You need to sand down the flash drive a little or abandon the idea.

SIM card not detected

The chip is damaged. Try to install it without this design or have it repaired by the operator.

The smartphone asks to format the memory card or does not see it

Contacts are missing / card is damaged. To check, peel off the SIM card and insert a flash drive. If you still can’t see it, you most likely damaged it when you ground it down. The plastic is very thin, so the flash drive can be easily damaged beyond repair.

We don’t remember who invented the combined slots, but there is reason to believe that the author of this horror is a Chinese company with a name starting with the letter H. However, it shouldn’t be blamed for the popularization of this strange solution: the idea was quickly picked up by dozens of other manufacturers, and now a large Some smartphones do not allow you to use two SIM cards and a memory card at the same time.

Manufacturers can understand: combined slots (SIM+SIM or SIM+MicroSD to choose from) are cheaper to produce, and they also take up less space in the case than three separate slots at once. What’s important: we’ll save on the extra slot by installing a slightly more capacious battery.

In general, it is possible to understand them, but it is unlikely to forgive them. Because combination slots are extremely inconvenient. Especially if the device does not have 64 or 128 GB of memory, like flagships, but only 16. Of these, another 3-4 are consumed by the system, and the user who needs two SIM cards is left with a measly 10-plus “gigs” . Well, where is this good? That's right, nowhere. And that’s why we’ve collected several smartphones in this review. different classes, offering just separate slots for two SIM cards and a MicroSD flash drive.

An interesting upper-middle class smartphone in a glass case, with a USB Type-C port, a high-quality AMOLED screen and a good camera. A little expensive, of course, compared to analogues, if you compare the characteristics “on paper”. However high price justified by some pleasant aspects, for example, the presence of protection against water and dust according to the IP68 standard and those separate slots. If you still want to save money, look towards the Galaxy A5 2017 - it is a little simpler and cheaper. But on the Galaxy A3 2017, if you need exactly three slots, you shouldn’t look: there are two of them.

A mid-level device from Nokia, revived this year. Pros: the correct slots, of course, as well as Android with guaranteed updates for several years and a nice metal case. The model does not have very striking features, but overall it is a good workhorse for those who still believe in Nokia. And yes, you can consider it as an alternative - this device is simpler in all respects, but it still has three card slots.

Motorola employs the right people: that they are in an embrace with the G5 Plus, that the Moto E series devices use separate slots for SIM cards and MicroSD. We included the Moto E Plus in this review, since this device, in addition to everything else, also has a powerful battery - 5000 mAh. The case is metal, the chipset... But with the chipset everything is complicated: a simpler version with the MediaTek platform is supplied to Russia, while a more powerful version with the Qualcomm chipset is supplied to some other countries. If you are visiting the USA, buy Moto E Plus there.

A middle-class frameless phone with an 18:9 aspect ratio, reminiscent of two flagship smartphones of the Korean company - V30 and G6. This is what makes him interesting, being otherwise quite simple solution. There isn't even an NFC chip. However, for those who want to get NFC and a larger volume random access memory(3 instead of 2 GB) there is a slightly more expensive option.

Previously, Sony used the correct “three-card” layout in almost all of its models, but recently the Japanese have relaxed somewhat. However, the Xperia XA1 is a pleasant exception; there are exactly three slots. The smartphone also has a 2300 mAh battery, a 23-megapixel camera, a 5-inch HD screen and mediocre MediaTek chipset. But the main thing, of course, is the so-called “Sony style”: the design of the Xperia XA1 really differs from smartphones from other manufacturers, which can often be confused with each other.

IN last years Xiaomi stubbornly followed the “SIM+SIM or SIM+MicroSD” rule, but made an exception with the Redmi Note 5A model. A simple version of this device is supplied to Russia, that is, without a fingerprint scanner, with cameras of average quality and 16 GB of internal memory. But it is quite cheap, being one of the most affordable smartphones in the Xiaomi line.

And again, a device with a 5000 mAh battery - that is, “long-lasting”. On the one hand, this is one of the simplest devices in the Zenfone 4 family, on the other hand, it has a lot of interesting things. Here you have the mentioned battery, and three slots, and a dual rear camera. The principle of its operation is approximately the same as that of LG models - one wide-angle lens, which allows you to capture large objects from a short distance.

How more possibilities on a smartphone - the more convenient it is for the user. Manufacturers of these devices usually take care of filling their products with maximum functionality. But often you can make small improvements on your own, without much time and effort, that will allow you to obtain additional benefits.

Certain South Korean and Chinese manufacturers equip their smartphones with slots in which either one SIM card and a memory card can be installed to increase the capacity of the permanent storage device, or two SIM cards. But the user does not need to make such a difficult choice, since it is possible to insert two SIM cards and a microSD flash drive into the smartphone at the same time. To do this, you need to carry out several simple manipulations that will take literally a few minutes.

How to fit three devices into two smartphone slots

The ability to effectively use a hybrid of a SIM card and a microSD memory card is available because the two initial elements are designed differently. Their contact groups are offset from each other by a sufficient distance to combine two devices into one.

To complete the job you will need a set of simple tools and accessories.:

  • scissors;
  • tweezers or small pliers;
  • lighter or candle;
  • hot melt glue or other suitable adhesive;
  • SIM card, microSD and the smartphone slot intended for them.

In order to make a hybrid device, you need to perform a certain set of operations one by one.

1. The memory card may be a little thicker than necessary, so you should process it a little on the back side, removing a small layer.

2. Attention, before performing this operation, practice on an unnecessary SIM card.

The SIM card must be very carefully heated with a lighter or a candle flame on the opposite side from the place where the chip is glued. The glue will become liquid. This way the chip can be carefully removed using tweezers or small pliers.

3. The chip should be cut around the edges to the required size, with the expectation that it will fit on a flash memory card. When doing this, be careful not to remove important parts of the device.

4. Glue the chip onto the memory card, observing the required orientation of the sides. Apply a little glue so that the volume of the hybrid is not too large.

5. Insert the resulting hybrid device into the slot, then into the smartphone and check its functionality.

If all operations are performed correctly and accurately, three devices will work simultaneously in two slots, without interfering with each other at all.
