While looking for new interesting products from the GearBest range, I focused my attention on a miniature IP camera with an Ethernet interface, video recording in resolution up to fullHD, customizable focus and optical zoom.

And today I want to present its review.

Shooting examples

I won’t beat around the bush, but I’ll immediately post examples of video recordings from the camera I’m reviewing to assess the quality.


This is how the camera shoots daytime days being placed on the window. The focus is set to the wall of the opposite house, the zoom is not used.

Another example of night photography, in which the lights go out for a while and the yard is plunged into almost complete darkness. A miracle does not happen, and without IR illumination in complete darkness the camera practically goes blind.


Shall we try the zoom? We turn it up to the maximum and focus on the local lumpen, sitting with a beer at the entrance of the house opposite.


And one more example of how optical zoom works. This time the focus is set on the roadway. The license plates of both parked cars and those passing this section of the road are clearly visible.

I suggest everyone draw their own conclusions about picture quality. But to my inexperienced taste, the shooting quality is quite decent, and the detail when using the optical zoom is generally pleasantly surprising.

Getting started with the camera

To conclude the review, I will briefly describe the process of preparing to work with the camera.

With default settings, the camera is configured with a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and an IP address of 192.168.1.10. If in local network addresses are distributed using a different mask, you need to change the corresponding settings.

To do this, you will have to use the DeviceManager application from the disk included with the camera:

Install the application, click IP Search and wait for the camera to be detected.

We change the settings and save them by clicking the Modify button.

The camera even has a web interface (the default login is admin, the default password is empty; edited via DeviceManager), but it only works correctly on Internet Explorer with an additional plugin installed. Microsoft Edge is no longer suitable for him, Firefox, etc. - especially.

Therefore, I tested the camera in the CMS application on disk - this is a multi-channel video recorder for Windows. Everything in it works with the settings “out of the box”.

Since the camera supports the ONVIF protocol, it can be easily connected to any third-party video server that supports this protocol. In mine I mentioned MotionEye - so, it’s quite suitable.

Access to the camera via the cloud is also supported. For this, the Chinese service XMEye is used (there is a web interface and applications for Windows and Android). To connect, you need to set in the service a unique CloudID assigned to a specific device (visible through DeviceManager) and an IP address (you can use Dynamic DNS services - again, through DeviceManager).

Conclusion

This is the camera I reviewed.

In my opinion, the most good option Its application is to install it in a bathroom ventilation duct and rent out an apartment to a pretty student, use it for covert surveillance of critical important areas indoors: for example, behind front door or a place to store valuables. IP cameras can be divided according to many parameters, both physical and software. IP cameras are digital devices, so one of the most important parameters responsible for image quality is resolution. Video encoding

The video stream received by the camera is compressed with a specific codec using the processor built into the camera. Depending on the processor performance, the camera can use one of three codecs - MJPEG, MPEG4 or H.264. The cheapest cameras use the MJPEG codec, a feature of which is the compression of each individual frame of the video stream using the JPEG image compression algorithm. This codec is the least demanding of camera processor resources, which is why it is used everywhere. However, the size of a video file compressed using MJPEG is several times larger than that of a video file compressed with more modern codecs.

More expensive cameras compress the video stream using MPEG4 or H.264 codecs. A video stream compressed by such codecs loads the network channel significantly less when transmitting video to network storage or a server for viewing video in real time. The video file, in turn, takes up less storage space, be it an FTP server or a memory card installed in the camera itself. Thus, if you are going to constantly record video, but do not want to take up a lot of storage space, then your choice is an IP camera with H.264 support.
