The film "Poddubny" is being released on Russian screens with Mikhail Porechenkov as the famous athlete. The picture shows the biography and personal life of Ivan Poddubny.

Physical parameters of Poddubny: height 184 cm, weight 118 kg, biceps 46 cm, chest 134 cm on exhalation, hip 70 cm, neck 50 cm.

Ivan Poddubny was born on October 8, 1871 in the village of Bogodukhovka, Zolotonosha district, Poltava province (now Chernobaevsky district, Cherkasy region, Ukraine) in the family of a hereditary Zaporozhye Cossack Maxim Ivanovich Poddubny.

His whole family was famous for its strength. Ivan also inherited from his ancestors great stature, phenomenal strength and extraordinary endurance, and along the line of his mother, who sang beautifully, a delicate ear for music. As a child, on Sundays and holidays, he sang in the church choir.

From childhood, Ivan was accustomed to hard peasant work and from the age of 12 he worked as a laborer. Father Maxim Ivanovich himself was of heroic growth and Herculean strength. Many years later, Poddubny will say that the only person who is stronger than him is only his father.

In 1893-1896 he was a port loader in Sevastopol and Feodosia, in 1896-1897 he worked as a clerk in the Livas firm.

In 1896, Ivan Poddubny defeated very famous athletes at that time - Lurikh, Borodanov, Razumov, the Italian Pappi, at the Feodosia Circus of Beskaravayny. From that moment, his career as a wrestler began.

From 1897 he performed in the arenas of circuses as a weightlifter and a wrestler (he began with Russian belt wrestling, in 1903 he switched to classical (French) wrestling).

He has repeatedly performed on tours in Russian cities and abroad, having visited about 50 cities in 14 countries.

Although he lost individual fights, in 40 years of performances he did not lose a single competition or tournament.

He repeatedly won the "world championships" in classic wrestling among professionals, including the most authoritative of them - in Paris (1905-1908).

During the Civil War, he worked in circuses in Zhitomir and Kerch. In 1919 he defeated the best fighter of the Makhnovist army in Berdyansk. In 1920, he was arrested by the Odessa Cheka and sentenced to death, but was soon released.

In 1923-1924 he worked at the State Circus, then spent 3 years on tour in Germany and the USA.

On February 23, 1926, all telegraphs of the planet “trumpeted” about him: “The other day Ivan Poddubny defeated the best fighters of the new world in New York, having won the title of“ American Champion ””.

The six-time world champion among professionals impressed everyone not only with his phenomenal strength and skill, but also with his athletic longevity, because in 1926 he was 55!

In November 1939, in the Kremlin, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR for his outstanding services "in the development of Soviet sports".

During the war years he lived in the territory occupied by the Germans in the city of Yeisk. He refused to go to Germany and train German athletes, saying that “I am a Russian wrestler. And I'll stay with them. "

He left the carpet in 1941 at the age of 70. In the post-war years he lived in terrible poverty, for the sake of food he had to sell all the awards he had won.

Ivan Maksimovich died on August 8, 1949 in Yeisk, a small resort town on the shores of the Azov Sea, from a heart attack.

He was buried in the same place, in Yeisk, in the city park, now bearing his name. There is also a monument to him, and nearby are the museum of I.M.Poddubny and the sports school named after him.

On the grave of Poddubny is carved: "Here the Russian hero lies."

Personal life of Ivan Poddubny

Poddubny's first love, gymnast Mariyka, crashed in the circus arena. His wife, the actress Kvitko-Fomenko, fled with the White Guard officer, taking all his medals with her.

The second wife, a bagel trader, kept the mighty Poddubny in tight-knit gloves all her life, often shouting: "It's not for you to have fun with French women ..."

They say that behind this phrase hid a secret why the wrestler could not have children. For refusing to continue the tour, the American impresario slipped him a beauty sick with syphilis.

Ivan Poddubny is a famous Russian, Soviet professional wrestler, athlete and circus artist. This is a real man-legend, a Russian hero, whose performances gathered full houses in our country, in America, Germany, France, Italy.

Childhood

Ivan Poddubny was born in the village of Bogodukhovka (Poltava province) on October 8, 1871. His father Maxim was a descendant of the Zaporozhye Cossacks. Ivan went to his father, having inherited remarkable physical strength from his parent. From a mother who sang well, the boy got a delicate ear for music. The Poddubny family was poor, Vanya was taught from an early age to hard peasant labor, from the age of 12 he began to work for rich fellow villagers. On Sundays, the hero Poddubny could be seen in the church, he was the chorister of the church choir.

When Ivan was 22 years old, he went to the Crimea. This trip was vital, the guy did not want to leave his native village at all, he went to work. The time has come to create a family, and a bride was found - the beautiful Alena. The girl grew up in a well-to-do family, for this reason her father categorically did not want to pass off his beloved daughter for the poor man Poddubny. Ivan thought that he could make a lot of money, and then Alena's father would accept the choice of his daughter. In fact, everything turned out differently, new life experiences quickly wiped love from Ivan's head, and he forgot about the girl. For three years, the young hero worked as a loader in the ports of Sevastopol, Feodosia. Familiar sailors, surprised at the strength of the young man, introduced him to the training system.

First steps in sports

In 1896, Poddubny first appeared in the ring, it was from that moment that the sports biography of the Russian hero began. Ivan was an ordinary spectator who came to see the performance of the Beskaravayny circus. He watched the performances of the athletes with great interest. After one of the numbers, the entertainer invited the audience to take part in the duel. Poddubny entered the ring. The port loader emerged victorious from the bout with titled athletes who performed “on the belts”. So his new life began.

In Russia, Ivan quickly became famous. The chairman of the St. Petersburg Society of Athletes offered the wrestler to take part in the World Championship, which was held in Paris. Ivan was not familiar with the French style of wrestling, he had to master this technique at an accelerated pace. Titled athletes competed against the "Russian bear". Poddubny won eleven fights, but he failed to defeat the Frenchman Boucher.

The cunning rival smeared his body with oil, Poddubny's hands only slid over it and could not grab it. The refereeing team recognized Boucher as the winner of this fight.

The defeat did not break the moral foundations of the Russian hero, he himself never used dirty methods in the ring. Victory at any cost did not interest him at all.

Two years later, in Paris, athletes from all over the world gathered again for the championship, where Poddubny was expecting a real triumph. For the next three years, he participates in many fights in different countries of the world and comes out victorious everywhere. Journalists called this athlete "champion of champions". The Russian hero did not know rest, his whole life passed on wheels, was a continuous journey. Now he had the money to get his own house, a family, but there was no time. In 1910, Poddubny decided to leave the sport.

Circus career

The athlete returned to the circus arena when he was 42 years old. He worked in Zhitomir, in Kerch, in 1922, having received an invitation to work in the troupe of the Moscow circus, he moved to the capital. At that time, the strong man was already 51 years old, but he did not complain about his health. He had no contraindications for working in the circus. Such a verdict was made by the medical commission after examining Poddubny.

After a while, the athlete settled in Petrograd, where he also worked in a circus. The artist's financial situation left much to be desired, for this reason he agreed to tour America and Germany. The performances of the Russian hero were sold out, but in 1927 he wished to return to the Soviet Union. It was rumored that in the United States, the wrestler managed to earn a lot of money, which is still in the account of an American bank. The athlete worked in the circus until the age of 70, this was his personal record.

Personal life

Love for Alena, a girl from her native village, quickly ended. The next chosen one of the strong man was the tightrope walker Emilia. This capricious, mercantile girl needed a wealthy man. Ivan loved her with all his heart, and Emilia only played at love, forced the hero to fulfill all her whims and whims. A rich admirer of Emilia saved Poddubny from these difficult, unequal relations. The woman left Ivan and left with her new lover.

When Poddubny began working in Kiev, he met the gymnast Mashenka. Warm feelings arose between them, for the first time fate did not put any obstacles in love for Ivan. The girl reciprocated him, and young people enthusiastically made plans for the future. However, a tragedy soon struck - during her speech, Maria fell from the trapeze and crashed.

And only at forty years old Ivan found marital happiness. Antonina Kvitko-Fomenko was a recognized beauty. The couple acquired a land plot, built a house, and got a farm. Everything was fine, but Antonina was desperately bored, Ivan was often absent from home, he had to go on tour. When he returned from his next tour, he did not find his wife. She fled with the officer. A few years later, the fugitive realized her mistake, tried to go back, but Ivan could not forgive the betrayal.

The last love of the strongman Poddubny was a wonderful woman, Maria Mashonina. She was a widow, the mother of his student. Ivan admired the beauty and sensuality of this woman. He lived with her until the end of his days. They did not have children together, but Ivan Maksimovich considered himself a happy father, treated his son Maria like his own child. The happy family settled in their own house in Yeisk, which Ivan was able to build with the money he earned in the United States.

  • From childhood, Ivan Maksimovich kept himself in a tough sports framework. He weighed 120 kg, the strong man's height was 185 cm. The strong man walked everywhere with a steel cane, the weight of which was 16 kg. In 1910, he had a huge number of awards - badges, gold medals, the total weight of which reached 32 kg.
  • In 1898, the Kiev circus performer Akim Nikitin advised the athlete to grow a mustache to show his belonging to the Zaporozhye Cossacks. It was at this time that the famous photograph of Poddubny appeared in a Circassian coat with gas and a dagger.
  • The Russian hero was assassinated more than once. For the first time this happened in the Zhytomyr circus, where drunken anarchists shot at him. This was in 1919. Almost the same thing happened in Kerch, where a drunken officer shot at an athlete. These are far from all the misadventures of the famous wrestler, he spent some time in the dungeons of the Odessa Cheka, survived the betrayal of his beloved women, the death of gymnast Mashenka.

Cause of death

In August 1949, the athlete died. The official cause of death is a heart attack. However, doctors believe that this disease was provoked by prolonged malnutrition. The athlete's heroic body needed adequate nutrition. The food ration that was issued during these years was too meager, Poddubny's body could not function normally.

The widow of Poddubny did not have the means to put a monument on her husband's grave. After the intervention of the press, eight years later, a monument was erected at the place of the strongman's resting place with a beautiful inscription - "Here the Russian hero lies."

Ivan Poddubny is an athlete, professional wrestler, circus performer. Thanks to his amazing abilities, he became a legendary man. His performances collected and delighted a huge number of spectators not only in Russia, but also in different countries of the world.

The biography of Ivan Poddubny is full of bright and interesting events.

A family

He was born on October 8, 1871 in the village of Bogodukhovka (now the village of Krasenovka) in the Poltava region in a family of farmers. Ivan was the firstborn. After him, six more children were born: three boys and three girls. The family lived in poverty. From early childhood, children were taught to do hard work. At the age of twelve, the boy became a farm laborer, first for a landowner in his village, and then in a neighboring one. For 10 years he worked for the local wealthy. He was not taken into the army, since he was the eldest of the sons in the family.

From his father Ivan Poddubny inherited good health, a heroic physique, tremendous strength and endurance. From his mother - an ear for music, thanks to which he was taken to perform in the church choir on Sundays.

The beginning of a new life

At the age of 22, he moved to Crimea. This act was done for the sake of the girl he loved. She reciprocated him, but she was from a wealthy family, so her parents were against the marriage of her daughter with a poor man. Ivan went to Crimea in order to earn a lot of money, and then return to her. However, having left his native land, he very soon forgot about her.

For three years, Ivan Poddubny worked as a loader, first in the Sevastopol port, and then in Feodosiya. Acquaintance with athletes Anton Preobrazhensky and Vasily Vasiliev changed his life. Thanks to these people, he became seriously involved in sports.

His weightlifting career began in 1887, when the Beskorovainy circus arrived in Feodosia. Famous wrestlers Pyotr Yankovsky and Georg Lurich worked in the circus troupe. Everyone could measure their strength with them. A belt wrestling championship was announced in the circus. Poddubny decided to take part in it. Over the next two weeks, he defeated almost all the circus athletes. Only one wrestler was not defeated by him - the giant Pyotr Yankovsky.

Circus work

After this event, Ivan began regular training. Work ceased to satisfy him, and he moved to Sevastopol. Here he works in the troupe of wrestlers, led by Georg Lurich, in the Italian Truzzi circus. He studied all the features of belt wrestling, developed a training system for himself. From an ordinary rude peasant, he turned into a real professional athlete.

After a while, Ivan Poddubny was invited to work in the Nikitin brothers' circus in Kiev. With him, he began touring. During 3 years of work in this circus, he visited all cities of the European part of Russia. His performances as a wrestler and athlete amazed the audience. Ivan became a celebrity.

"Champion of Champions"

In 1903, the chairman of the St. Petersburg Athletic Society invited him to participate in the World Championship in French wrestling. Ivan began intensive preparations for this championship under the guidance of a French coach, which lasted three months.

There were 130 participants in the championship. Poddubny won 11 fights, but he lost to the Frenchman Boucher. The whole trick of the insidious adversary was that his body was smeared with olive oil, thanks to which he slipped out of the bear's grip of the Russian hero. After this defeat, the Russian athlete became an opponent of dishonest methods in the ring.

A year later, Ivan Poddubny met again in the ring with Bush. The fight lasted 40 minutes, as a result the Russian athlete won.

In 1905, Ivan again participates in the international championship in Paris. There he becomes world champion. After this victory, he was involved in competitions in different countries of the world and invariably defeated all rivals.

For 40 years, the athlete has not lost a single championship, for which he was called the "champion of champions".

Termination of an athlete's career

1910 was a turning point in the sports career of the absolute champion. He suddenly decides to leave the sport and start a family. Antonina Kvitko-Fomenko became his wife. The hero spent all his savings on a large house, two mills and an apiary in the Poltava region. However, the landowner did not work out of Ivan. He was illiterate, did not know how to run a household. In addition, his brother, who had become a drunkard, burned down his mill. As a result, Ivan soon went bankrupt.

At the age of 42, Poddubny returns to work in the circus. In Zhitomir, and later in Kerch, he performs in the arena. In 1922 he was invited to work first in the Moscow, and later in the Petrograd circus. Despite his middle age and physical activity, the wrestler is in good health. Due to the difficult financial situation, Ivan Poddubny agrees to tour America and Germany. The artist's performances were very successful. In 1927 he returned to his homeland.

Personal life of Ivan Poddubny

Ivan's first youthful love was not too long. After leaving his native village, the girl was forgotten by him.

His second love is the tightrope walker Emilia. She was older in age, skillfully played on his feelings. After she got a rich admirer, she ran away with him.

After an unsuccessful relationship with Emilia, Poddubny moved to Kiev. There he met the gymnast Mashenka, who reciprocated the athlete. She was fragile, small in stature, but distinguished by extraordinary courage. Masha performed under the dome of the circus, working on a trapeze without belay. Together they made plans for their future life together. The wedding day was set. But one day, during the next performance, Mashenka fell from a height and crashed. After this tragic event, Poddubny left the circus, closed in on himself. Only after a lapse of time, having accepted the invitation to participate in the World Championships in Paris, he was able to return to his former life.

For the first time, Ivan married the beautiful Antonina Kvitko-Fomenko at the age of 40. They moved to the Poltava region, started a farm. Family life lasted for 7 years. But one day, when the athlete was on tour in Odessa, Antonina met the officer and ran away with him, taking her husband's gold medals with her. After a while, she wanted to return to her former spouse, but Ivan could not forgive her betrayal.

last love

Maria Mashoshina became the last love of the legendary athlete. She was a widow, the mother of his student. Ivan was fascinated by her beauty, sensuality and friendliness. In 1927, after returning from a tour of America, he married her. He lived with this woman until his last days. They bought a house in Yeisk on the shores of the Azov Sea. They did not have common children, but Poddubny was very attached to the son of Mary and treated him with paternal warmth. The adopted son, Ivan Mashoshin, leaving professional wrestling, graduated from a technical university and began to work as the chief engineer of the Rostov car assembly plant. In May 1943, he died during a Nazi air raid. He left a son Roman, whom Poddubny took care of as his own grandson.

Ivan taught him to sports, sent him to a sports school, where the boy could practice classical wrestling. However, during the Great Patriotic War, the grandson went to the front and was seriously wounded. Therefore, in the future, I had to abandon the career of a wrestler.

At the end of life

In 1941, Ivan entered the ring for the last time and traditionally won. He was 70 years old.

During a famine, the athlete had a particularly hard time, since his huge, trained body required much more food than rations. His health was shaken.

In May 1947, Poddubny fell unsuccessfully, resulting in a fractured hip. He found himself tied to bed and crutches. For an athlete accustomed to constant exhausting workouts, enormous physical exertion, bed rest has become destructive.

On August 8, 1949, Ivan Poddubny died of a heart attack. He was buried in the Yeisk park, not far from the graves of the pilots who died during the war. In 1965 this park was named "named after I. M. Poddubny".

In 1955, a monument was erected on the grave of the great athlete. Not far from the grave is the Memorial Museum, where personal belongings, unique photos of Ivan Poddubny, posters and other exhibits telling about the life and sports career of this amazing person are kept.

To his opponent, 20-year-old Paris champion Raoul le Boucher, 35-year-old Poddubny lost. But soon at the championship in Moscow, he defeated the strongest rivals - Shemyakin, Lurikh, Yankovsky. And later, at the international championship in St. Petersburg, he also put Le Boucher, having received the first prize and 55 thousand rubles - a huge amount for those times.

In 1910, Ivan decided to leave his sports career and return to his native village, even bought land there, started a farm, got married ... But three years later he could not stand it and returned to the carpet.

The years after the revolution were not easy for the athlete. Although he was not involved in politics, but continued to fight in the ring, he was arrested by Odessa security officers, mistaking for a certain Poddubnov, the organizer of the Jewish pogroms. True, then we sorted it out and let go. But during this time, Antonina Poddubny's wife left for another.

In 1922, while on tour with the Moscow Circus in Rostov-on-Don, Poddubny met his future second wife Maria Semyonovna Mashonina. He had to feed his family, he continued to tour, again visited Germany and even America ... The Americans persuaded him to stay with them, acted both by persuasion and threats ...
