In the old days, they were quite common in Russia, but today they have practically fallen out of use, and in the registry office there are only isolated cases of their registration over several years (the frequency of such names is less than 1 per 10,000 newborn girls).

Here are just a few of them: Avdotya, Agrafena, Anatolia, Antonida, Apollinaria, Athanasius, Vassa, Virinea, Glyceria, Dorothea, Eudoxia, Eupraxia, Euphemia, Zinovia, Iraida, Isidora, Lucia, Malania, Muse, Olympias, Salome, Sebastian, Thekla, Fedosya, Theodora, Theoktista, Feofaniya, Kharitina.

Moms and dads continue to love unusual names and call their children them. New data on what boys and girls were called in the first quarter of 2017 was presented in the capital’s Civil Registry Office.

So, now there are boys in Moscow with the names Laurus, Achilles, Potap and two Thomases. As for the girls, their parents named one of them Uma. Also in the capital you can now meet two Ophelias, Serenas and Junos. By the way, among such rare names as Elizabeth, Francesca, Paola, Julia and Iris, the once popular name Zinaida suddenly appeared, which two girls received.

Rare exotic names for children are called both by foreign families for whom these names are familiar, and by Russians who want their child to stand out with an unusual name. Families where one of the parents is a citizen of Russia and the other is a foreign country can also name their child Harry, Matteo or Ophelia.

The press service of the Moscow Civil Registry Office explained.

Also, Muscovites are increasingly turning to traditional Slavic and Greek options.

The list of popular names has changed slightly compared to last year. Alexander is the leader among the boys. 764 babies received this name. This time Mikhail moved from fourth to second place (655 children), and Artem retained third position (630 children). Then follow such names as Danila (Daniil, Danil), Maxim, Ivan, Dmitry, Kirill, Timofey and Egor. Last year and the year before, the name Andrei was in the top ten, but now it has moved to 13th place. Instead, the name Timofey was in 9th place (363 babies).

There are even fewer changes in the ranking of female names. The top three have maintained their positions since 2015. In first place is Sophia or Sophia (925 babies), followed by Maria (638 girls) and Anna (580 babies). For the first time, Alisa was in fourth place in the ranking (517 newborns), followed by Anastasia, Polina, Victoria and Alexandra. The top 10 also included Ksenia and Ekaterina, who previously occupied places in the top twenty.

Let us remind you that now parents have much less opportunities to name their child a strange name. In early May, Vladimir Putin signed a law introducing some bans. Now, according to Article 58 of the Family Code, “the use of numbers, alphanumeric designations, numerals, symbols and non-letter characters, with the exception of the “hyphen” sign, or any combination thereof, or swear words, indications of ranks, positions, titles." Previously it was expected that the ban could also include compound names and abbreviated names. However, legislators decided that many such names had already become common practice, and therefore there was no point in changing the situation.

Statistics of names in Russia: fashion for names, popularity of names

Should you choose a unique name for your child? Or maybe you need to give your baby a widespread, mass-produced name so that he doesn’t stand out? - This issue must be decided by the parents themselves. But we considered it our task to provide parents with information about the frequency of modern male and female names.

You will find the popularity rating of newborn names (according to statistics from 2010-2017) here:girls names, boys names.

And this page provides data on Russian names that are most common among young people aged 17 to 20 years. Interesting? Then read on.

A good idea of what names modern young people have can be obtained, for example, from an analysis of data on applicants in 2015 - candidates for admission to the country's two main universities - Moscow (MSU) and St. Petersburg (SPbSU).

Lists of applicants for bachelor's and master's degrees were analyzed and processed, that is, the names of boys and girls born in 1995 - 1998 were considered; these lists were posted on official websitestah admissions committees both universities in the summer of 2015. Why was this particular age range (17 - 20 years) chosen for analysis? - Well, in particular, for such a simple reason that these young people themselves will become parents in the coming years.

Analysis of the combination of three elements: personal name, patronymic and last name made it possible to identify with high probability those applicants which are named in accordance with Russian tradition(this includes not only Russian applicants, but also Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews, in some cases Yakuts, Ossetians, Tatars), in contrast to persons with names not found in Russian families ( Armenian, Georgian, Kalmyk, Tuvan, Buryat names, names of Muslims of the Volga region, North Caucasus and Central Asia, etc.).

As a result, about 21 thousand female and 25 thousand male “Russian” names remained in the total sample (in the full list of applicants). This amount of data is quite sufficient to make certain statistical conclusions. The results are presented in tabular form:

100 most common female names

among applicants from Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University admitted in 2015

In total, in 2015, both universities received a total of approximately 21,000 applications from female applicants wearing« Russians » names. In the table below, their names are arranged in alphabetical order. Along with the main forms of names, their variants are indicated:

HAVE AN OPINION

Forward, son of Velesvet. What do I need in your name?

Column by "VM" columnist Mikhail Vinogradov

Evangelina! – a tall, stooped woman, apparently a grandmother, shouted, turning her head. - Come, sit here!

I shuddered and looked hauntedly around the subway car. I wanted to shake my head so that water would flow out of my ears, but it wasn’t there. “Maybe Eva-Angelina?” I reassured myself. When I myself was the age of this “Evangelina” in a purple ski suit, the girls around me responded to Lena, Masha, or - in the most extreme case - Nonna().

Give me a human name, mom

Column by "VM" columnist Anna Povago

There will be no more Ivanovich Dolphins and Sofia-Solnyshek Nikolaevnas in the capital: the State Duma nevertheless approved a bill banning calling children non-standard and ridiculous names. That's not all: by the second reading, the document will still be finalized, and the list of incorrect names will be expanded ().
