Turmeric or cinnamon, which is healthier? Turmeric: beneficial properties and contraindications, recipes

There are many different spices in the world, one of them is turmeric - health benefits and harms, which people are increasingly interested in. From the article you will learn about the medicinal properties of this interesting spice, how to take it for preventive and therapeutic purposes, as well as the types and characteristics of the spice and folk recipes with turmeric.

If you were asked to choose just one single spice for your future life, then choose turmeric. The plant is native to India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine since 500 BC. e. It has a lot of useful properties.

It is said to work better than most drugs. We cannot claim that turmeric can cure all diseases. But studies have shown that it is useful for many problems with very few (if any) side effects.

What is turmeric and what does it look like?

Turmeric (Curcuma longa, also called Indian saffron) is a spice from the ginger family. Gives dishes a slightly pungent bitter taste, a spicy smell and a very intense yellow-orange color. Turmeric is widely used in cooking and medicine. Used in India for thousands of years as an ingredient in many dishes and as additives in medicine.

What immediately strikes you when using fresh turmeric rhizome is its intense aroma and, above all, its very strong coloring. Turmeric has such a strong dye (it gives it color) that it is difficult to wash it off, even when drying your hands.

The key active ingredient is curcumin, which has an extremely intense orange-yellow color and many medicinal properties.

Appearance

Turmeric is a meter-tall perennial plant. Its leaves are quite long, ovoid in shape with pointed tips. The leaves are dark green, sometimes with lighter tones.

The inflorescences of the plant are yellow-green in color, sometimes even purple flowers are found among them. However, they are the ones who do not form seeds. Despite the fact that turmeric has seeds, reproduction is carried out by rhizomes. The main part of the rhizome has the shape of a tuber with a large number of lateral shoots, several centimeters in length.

Useful composition of turmeric

Turmeric, whose beneficial properties are undeniable, contains vitamins K, B, B1, B3, B2, C and trace elements: calcium, iron, phosphorus and iodine. But since they are contained in microdoses (for example, 100 grams of turmeric contains only 0.15 mg of vitamin B1), it makes no sense to talk about the importance of these elements in a pinch of seasoning added to food.

However, turmeric contains components that, even in microscopic quantities, have a healing effect on the human body. These are essential oils and their constituents sabinene, borneol, zingiberene, terpene alcohols, phellandrene, curcumin and a number of other components.

Curcumin occupies a special place in this list. It is what gives the yellow color to products containing it. The food additive E100 (turmeric) is made from curcumin, which is very often used by the food industry for the production of mayonnaise, cheese, butter, margarine and yogurt. Turmeric gives products a beautiful yellow tint and thereby gives them an attractive presentation.

Doctors have long been interested in the beneficial properties of curcumin. Scientific experiments revealed that curcumin causes the death of pathological tumor cells without affecting healthy cells. Thus, the use of drugs containing curcumin not only stopped growth, but also prevented the emergence of new malignant tumors.

Types of turmeric

There are about 40 species of this plant. But, only a few are used to prepare spices. The yellow powder that we use to prepare various dishes is produced from the rhizome of Curcuma longa. Many species of this plant are used in alcoholic beverages.

White turmeric

Turmeric cedoaria or white, is one of the varieties of the described aromatic plant. In cooking and medicine, powdered roots of the plant are used, which have a bitter-burning taste and an original smell.

In traditional Indian medicine, white turmeric is used to treat cough, pharyngitis, diabetes, anemia and other diseases. The spice produced from this plant is used as an analgesic and choleretic agent. White turmeric oil is used in perfumery.

Yellow turmeric

Yellow turmeric is a spice in powder form obtained by drying and grinding the root or length of turmeric. It is used in the preparation of omelettes, sauces, salads and stews. Yellow turmeric is used to give pilaf and pasta a richer taste.

Red turmeric

Some types of turmeric have red tubers. When they are crushed, not only the spice is obtained, but also a natural dye. Red turmeric is widely used as a spice in many traditional East Asian cuisines.

Indian turmeric

The spice, which many call Indian saffron, can not only give a dish an exquisite taste, but is also used as a natural antibiotic. In the traditional Indian medicine system of Ayurveda, this spice is endowed with many positive properties. In particular, turmeric is used for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.

Turmeric curry

Curry is a turmeric based mixture. This spice usually makes up 20%-30% of the entire curry mixture. In addition to turmeric, it can contain from 7 to 20 components.

Another essential component of such a spicy mixture is powdered curry leaves. In those countries where this spice does not grow, it is replaced with Greek fenugreek. Also among the curry ingredients you can find coriander and red pepper.

Curry is used to flavor and add an original flavor to dishes made from rice, meat, poultry and vegetables.

Javanese turmeric

Java turmeric is a plant that is larger than long turmeric. In addition to differences in size, the tubers of these plants have some differences in composition. If curcuma longa is used more as a spice, then the Javanese version of this crop is used more in the production of medicines.

Based on this plant, remedies for liver and gallbladder diseases and anti-inflammatory drugs are made.

Turmeric root

This root is that part of this plant that is successfully used in various medicines and is used in cosmetology. Moreover, it is from the tuberous roots of this plant that the seasoning is made. Turmeric root can be purchased in tablet, powder and capsule form

Turmeric root powder is used to treat ulcers and hemorrhoids. They can disinfect the wound and protect the body from the penetration of harmful organisms.

Turmeric root can be purchased as a vodka infusion. This infusion can be used in compresses to relieve muscle pain due to injuries, bruises and sprains. If you have a sore throat, vodka infusion of turmeric root can relieve irritation and swelling.

Medicinal benefits of turmeric

  • Anti-inflammatory effect

This is the main property for which this seasoning is valued. Curcuminoids have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect on the body, suppressing the action of inflammatory agents cytokines. Curcumin can be compared in its effects to some anti-inflammatory drugs, but without their negative effects on the stomach and mucous membranes.

Additionally, curcumin's anti-inflammatory effect does not affect or disrupt the body's natural inflammatory response, unlike medications. In laboratory conditions, the anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin was on par with known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

  • Analgesic effect. Pain and inflammation go together: by eliminating or suppressing one, the other will also go away.
  • Anti-aging effects

It's a big word, of course, but curcumin effectively suppresses various compounds that accumulate in the body and lead to premature aging and destruction of brain tissue and cells. This is a powerful antioxidant and a means to prolong youth.

Thus, curcumin is a natural antibiotic, helping to protect cells from pathogens.

  • Hepatoprotective properties. Curcuminoids are very beneficial for the liver and gallbladder. They have choleretic properties and normalize the functioning of the gallbladder, helping to restore liver cells.
  • Curcumin is effective for stomach diseases, ulcers, gastritis, and pancreas diseases.
  • Helps accelerate collagen synthesis, restore blood vessels and tissues.
  • Curcumin has the property of suppressing and destroying cancer cells of the stomach and esophagus, pancreas, prostate and mammary glands.

Based on many studies, anticancer drugs based on curcuminoids are being created. More and more research is proving curcumin's effectiveness in fighting cancer by killing cancer cells before they can form tumors.

For any neoplasms that can turn into cancer, it is very advisable to include curcumin and turmeric in the diet on an ongoing basis.

  • Curcumin is valuable as a remedy for joint diseases: arthritis, arthrosis, autoimmune diseases.

It has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on joints. Numerous studies have proven the beneficial effects of curcumin on joint problems. Suppressing inflammatory reactions in joints is the most sought after property of curcumin.

  • Turmeric will help with some autoimmune diseases by suppressing and regulating inflammatory processes in tissues.
  • Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant with a high value of this indicator, neutralizing the destructive effects of free radicals on body cells and DNA and preventing tissue acidification.
  • It has a beneficial effect on blood vessels and normalizes blood pressure, slows down the development of atherosclerosis.
  • Curcumin is recommended for use for cardiovascular diseases.

In the medical community, with more and more research and development, turmeric is becoming more and more popular, and many doctors see the future in its use and medicines based on it for heart diseases.

Turmeric has the properties of statins prescribed for cardiovascular diseases. Statins are drugs that help reduce and normalize cholesterol in the blood.

  • It has blood-thinning properties, which prevents the formation of blood clots.

These properties are quite strong: doctors do not recommend taking curcumin with other anticoagulant drugs to avoid bleeding.

  • Curcumin normalizes blood sugar levels by normalizing the production of the hormone insulin.

For athletes, the anti-catabolic effect of curcumin is important - it has a beneficial effect on the body, preventing and slowing down the processes of tissue destruction. This is especially important for muscle tissue. Helps reduce inflammation and tissue damage during training, increases the body's recovery after training.

  • Curcumin promotes weight loss by reducing cravings for sweets and fatty foods, and helps reduce adipose tissue in the body.

Contraindications for use

Unfortunately, there is probably not a single harmless product on Earth: someone may have an allergy or contraindications to its use. The same applies to turmeric - not everyone can add seasoning to dishes and use the spice to treat diseases. Let's talk about the main contraindications. Do not use turmeric if you have:

  1. allergy;
  2. pancreatitis;
  3. hepatitis;
  4. diabetes;
  5. hypotension;
  6. stomach diseases.

Also, turmeric should not be consumed if you have gallstones, since the spice leads to an increased outflow of bile.

These contraindications apply to the use of very large doses of spice. But, if you find your ailment on the list, it is better to consult your doctor.

Turmeric is not recommended for those who are expecting a baby, as the spice can cause pregnancy failure. Also, you should not give dishes with turmeric to children under six years of age, as they have a weak gastrointestinal tract.

To avoid any negative effects, do not consume more than 3 g of turmeric per day. It is better to add seasoning to dishes not every day. If you eat too much of the spice, you may experience bloating, indigestion, or diarrhea.

Delay consuming turmeric if you are taking any medications. Wait until the end of treatment.

Recipes for using turmeric for medicinal purposes

For liver treatment - how to take

The easiest way to include turmeric in the diet is as a seasoning when preparing various dishes. However, there are other methods of using spicy spices for medicinal purposes.

Use in its pure form. Take the powder (½ teaspoon) in its pure form with a glass of water. Drink the remedy in the morning on an empty stomach.

  • With celandine. Pour a teaspoon of celandine herb and turmeric powder into a glass of boiling water. Drink warm three times a day, 200 ml. The course of treatment is 30 days.
  • With milk and honey. Add a teaspoon of turmeric paste and a little honey (optional) to a glass of warm milk. Drink a glass of the drink on an empty stomach. Attention! Any products containing turmeric should not be used at the same time as taking medications.

Treatment of psoriasis with turmeric

Psoriasis is considered a skin disease, but the affected area is not limited to the skin. The disease can affect internal organs, joints and, if not properly treated, leads to disability. Spice alone will not be able to completely relieve a psoriasis patient from painful symptoms.

To solve the problem, complex therapy is required, which involves the use of medication, physiotherapy, and diet maintenance.

Attention! The use of alternative medicine methods must be agreed with a specialist.

Thanks to the active substances, turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and immunomodulatory effects for psoriasis. The cleansing properties of the spice also play an important role. A positive effect on the liver and intestines, removing toxins from the body allows you to cope with psoriasis using a complex effect on the body.

The ability of spice to improve the immune system reinforces the effectiveness of therapy.

Turmeric has helped many patients in the treatment of diseases such as psoriasis. It is added to juices, cocktails, and dishes as a seasoning, but this is not enough to effectively get rid of the symptoms of psoriasis. Turmeric can be presented not only in the form of a powdery mass and sold in the spice department. At pharmacies you can buy:

  • Pills. The main condition for a “correct” purchase is the presence of 95% turmeric extract in the composition of the product. The standard daily dose of tablets is 2 - 3 g. Separately, it is necessary to consult with your doctor, who will determine the dosage for each specific case.
  • Tinctures can be water or alcohol based and are taken orally. Before use, the drops are diluted in a small amount of water and taken 3 times a day in accordance with the instructions and prescription of a specialist.
  • Homemade ointments. For external use, you can prepare a paste-like mass according to a simple recipe:

Mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder with a small amount of water, stirring until the desired consistency is obtained.

Then the paste is applied to the affected areas of the skin and wrapped with a bandage. It is advisable to leave the product overnight and rinse with warm water in the morning. The results of the procedures will be noticeable within a few days.

Turmeric can also be mixed with aloe juice and used as a compress. This method will also be highly effective, because aloe has healing healing and antiseptic properties.

The result of using spices to treat psoriasis will be:

  • noticeable reduction in itching;
  • reduction of swelling;
  • elimination of local redness and plaques.

Don't expect instant results just by seasoning your food with spices. Any therapy is more effective when taken together.

Turmeric and type 2 diabetes are not always compatible, so its use requires consultation with a specialist. Since the spice, having a pronounced taste, affects the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, type 2 diabetes can be accompanied by gastritis, hemorrhoids and constipation.

Therefore, only a doctor will determine the dosage and advisability of taking the spice. In the absence of contraindications, taking this spice will improve the blood - increase the production of red blood cells, and platelet aggregation (which leads to the formation of plaques) will decrease.
This process of blood thinning in type 2 diabetes is very important, as it improves the patient’s well-being.

  • root, cut into pieces – 2 g;
  • root (powder) – 1-3 g; powder (sold in the store) – 500 mg;
  • tincture (1 teaspoon of powder, diluted in a glass of water) – for 2-3 doses.

On a note! You can enhance the healing effect by mixing turmeric with oil or black pepper.

There are exceptions; children over two years old are allowed to take the product, but this can only be done under the supervision of a doctor. Infants and children under two years of age are strictly prohibited from using turmeric in any form to treat cough.

Doctors also do not advise pregnant women to overuse turmeric. Numerous elements can cause allergies in both adults and children. Before starting treatment, it is better to consult a doctor.

Multiple drugs cannot be used for treatment. If you choose a recipe that contains turmeric, then use only this product. If your health does not improve, stop treatment and consult a doctor who will prescribe a different course of treatment.

If used incorrectly and in excess, turmeric can cause the following problems:

  • decreased blood pressure;
  • hair loss;
  • constipation;
  • heartburn;

How to properly prepare and take “golden milk” with turmeric

Golden milk with turmeric is not just a fashionable drink, but a legendary Ayurvedic remedy! This is a drink with powerful anti-inflammatory, cleansing, antioxidant and soothing properties that easily boosts immunity and normalizes weight.

Its three main components are:

  1. milk - which, according to Ayurveda, is good not only for the body, but also for the soul, as it relieves stress, calms and relieves insomnia.
  2. Turmeric is a unique spice that is considered a natural antibiotic, as it effectively relieves pain, infections, fights inflammation and cleanses the body.
  3. honey – we’ve all heard about how beneficial honey itself is, but it also significantly increases the healing properties of spices and herbs (and of course, turmeric)

First, you need to make a turmeric paste, which can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks and used as needed. And only then mix it with hot milk, butter and honey.

Turmeric paste for golden milk:

  • ¼ tbsp. turmeric powder
  • ½ tbsp. water
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and place on the stove. Bring to a boil over low heat, then simmer for 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool and transfer to a clean jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.

Turmeric Golden Milk: Recipe.

  • 1 tbsp. milk (cow, goat, soy, almond)
  • 1 tsp turmeric paste (see recipe above)
  • 1 tsp oils (coconut, almond, olive, sunflower)
  • 1-2 tbsp. honey (to taste)

Making golden milk is very simple. Add turmeric paste, oil and honey to hot milk (you can take any of the above - the main thing is not boiling, but slightly cooled so as not to neutralize the effect of honey) and mix. It will immediately become an intense yellow-orange color, which is where the name comes from)).

You can add ½ tsp. cinnamon, ginger and vanilla - all to your taste) But it definitely won’t be superfluous, because each spice is useful in its own way. This golden milk can be drunk every day at any time of the day. But if you are worried about inner restlessness or insomnia, then drink it right before bed. Sweet dreams guaranteed!!!

Today I want to tell you about the benefits of turmeric for our health, how it affects our well-being and energy levels, and how to use it for treatment.

There are many techniques and methods of treatment with this spice, and all treatment and healing with turmeric can be divided into internal and external treatment and healing.

In this article we will talk about how to use this spice internally in order to be healthy and active for many years and to heal those diseases that already exist.

From this article you will learn:

Kurukuma - healing properties and secrets of use

I have been using this spice for a long time and with pleasure, and I am not going to give it up, because over the entire time I have been using turmeric, it has proven to me that you can rely on it in many ways!

This spice not only has preventive properties, it has quite powerful healing properties, and it can do quite a lot for our health, so it’s worth learning about this in more detail, what do you think?

What is turmeric?

This plant is native to India.

A spice is made from its roots and leaves, which is popular not only in southeastern countries, but also throughout the world.

Curcuma longa, Curcuma domestica, Curcuma cultivars, or turmeric, yellow ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant, a species of the genus Curcuma of the Zingiberaceae family. Wikipedia

Due to the fact that turmeric has strong coloring properties (it gives a pleasant yellowish-golden color), it is quite widely used in cooking, in the food industry, in the manufacture of textiles, and in the production of cosmetics.

A significant “advantage” of this spice is that it is relatively inexpensive, so quite often the expensive spice saffron is replaced with turmeric.

That is why turmeric is called “Indian saffron”. You've probably come across this name in some recipes. If so, then know that Indian saffron and turmeric are the same thing.

The combination of the strongest healing, coloring and amazing taste and aromatic properties, with the perfect availability of this spice for all segments of the population anywhere in the world, makes turmeric truly ideal!

What is contained in turmeric - the composition of the ideal spice

Turmeric contains a very wide variety of macro- and microelements, a significant part of all known vitamins, as well as many other substances that are valuable and necessary for our body, for example, essential oils.

Separately, it is worth noting curcumin, which, in fact, is the very coloring substance contained in this spice.

It is extracted from the root and leaves of the plant using a method called extraction.

It is curcumin that is the very component due to which turmeric is called the strongest antioxidant, antiseptic, etc.

The incredible properties of the Indian spice turmeric

Thanks to its rich composition, this spice is very useful, and it can safely be classified as a natural remedy:

There is currently hundreds of evidence that turmeric can:

  • stop the growth, development and spread of metastases,
  • contribute to the launch of the process of self-destruction of cancer cells,
  • stop the growth of new blood vessels in existing tumors,
  • and much more, thanks to which turmeric is given a worthy and honorable place among natural remedies for fighting cancer.

Turmeric for weight loss

Turmeric will help you lose weight and get rid of it if you use it correctly, that is, combining it with other ways to achieve a slim figure.

Of course, if you don’t play sports and eat a lot of fatty, floury and sweet foods, then she won’t help here, we simply won’t give her a chance to prove herself to be our best assistant in this matter.

But we’re not one of those people, right?

Turmeric is very similar in its properties to ginger (by the way, it is - from the ginger family!). One of the names for turmeric is yellow ginger.

Curcumin, which is part of turmeric, prevents the formation of fatty tissue, that is, it simply prevents fat from being deposited on our sides and waist.

By the way, turmeric has long been used quite successfully in many well-known weight loss centers as a component of “anti-fat therapy” for patients!

Since this spice can quickly put metabolism in order, accelerate metabolism, improve blood circulation in tissues (this also applies to fat reserves!), relieve swelling by removing excess fluid from the body, and also improve the absorption of nutrients from food, get rid of accumulated toxins, then all this, taken together, has a very good effect on the condition of our body.

It becomes lighter and slimmer, cellulite decreases and fat gradually disappears on its own.

If we add physical exercise to this, review our diet, giving up unhealthy food, and drink enough clean water, then the process of losing weight will significantly accelerate, and the result will be consolidated, and the lost kilograms will no longer return.

  • Use turmeric powder in any preparation. Don’t be afraid to overdo it: Ayurvedic healers say that it’s unlikely to “screw up” with this, this spice is not like, for example, nutmeg, of which you only need a drop. But without fanaticism, of course: half a teaspoon per serving is quite normal.
  • When brewing tea, add turmeric, ginger and cinnamon powder (to taste). Drink tea not with sugar, but with honey. It’s great if the tea is herbal.
  • Add a teaspoon of turmeric to a glass of kefir or fermented baked milk, stir and drink. Important: take fermented milk products not chilled, but warm! Only in this case can you count on the fact that such a drink will bring the necessary benefits!
  • Before going to bed, you can take warm, hot milk with turmeric and honey: bring the milk to a boil, cool a little, add turmeric and honey. Stir and drink immediately, not forgetting to enjoy the taste of such milk and imagine yourself healthy, slim and beautiful!

If you do not drink cow's milk, then there is no question: any other milk will do - goat's milk or vegetable milk (from nuts, seeds or cereals), the effect will be similar.

How to treat with turmeric?

To treat diseases, you can use both turmeric powder, a spice that is usually added to dishes, and specially purchased turmeric preparations:

  1. turmeric extract tablets,
  2. in capsules,
  3. in various dietary supplements, where turmeric is included as a component.
  • Turmeric extract

It can serve as a substitute for regular spices, as it has absolutely all of its beneficial properties.

An extract is prepared from the root and leaves of turmeric, which is available in the form of tablets, capsules and liquid form.

This is very convenient for those who do not like the smell and taste of turmeric - it will be easier for them to take a capsule or tablet with turmeric extract.

In addition, there is another undoubted and big “plus” of such drugs - they are produced by manufacturers most often, using the latest technologies patented by them and using modern equipment.

The result is a product with a high degree of bioavailability for our body, and this is very, very important, because the main thing is how much is absorbed by the body, because the result will depend on this!

  • Turmeric oil

Turmeric essential oil is obtained from crushed dry roots using the steam distillation method.

The oil has a yellow-orange color due to the content of curcumin, a natural dye that is used in the food industry; it is used to color butter, cheese, etc.

The smell of turmeric oil is spicy, fresh, and it tastes bitter.

Turmeric oil is used in modern perfumery and cosmetics production; it is especially widely used in the manufacture of perfumes with a spicy oriental aroma.

In aromatherapy, turmeric essential oil is used as an excellent antibacterial agent for viruses and colds.

To do this, you can use various methods: aroma lamp, aroma pendant, taking baths with this oil, doing inhalations, etc.

Of course, for many traditional medicine recipes it is easier and more convenient to use turmeric powder, so it’s great if you always have this spice in your kitchen and in capsule form.

Turmeric with milk and honey and “golden milk” - what is their difference?

Many of you know the famous Ayurveda recipes where milk, honey and turmeric are mixed. Sometimes other components are added.

What is their difference?

Milk with turmeric and honey and “golden milk” are essentially the same thing, the only difference is in the method of preparing these drinks.

For “golden milk” you prepare a special turmeric paste in advance and store it in the refrigerator, adding it to hot milk as needed, and when preparing recipes from the “milk + turmeric + honey” series, you prepare everything at once, simply stirring it in hot milk all necessary components.

The effectiveness is the same, and this is evidenced by the results of people treated in this way.

The main thing is the choice of high-quality ingredients, especially turmeric, which must be fresh, of good quality, and of organic origin.

“Golden milk” is the secret of yogis’ health!

Golden milk is a very effective recipe, which in a short time can quickly restore the capillary network of blood vessels, cleansing them, and can help the body fight salt deposits.

Ayurveda experts say that by using this drink in your diet, you can experience for yourself what it is like when your knees don’t creak and the soles of your feet don’t burn even after a very long walk or after serious physical exertion.

At the same time, the complexion improves remarkably, much more energy and strength appears, the body rejuvenates, and diseased internal organs gradually get rid of inflammation and begin to function normally.

Recipe for making golden milk:

  • You need to add twice as much water to the turmeric powder (that is, take one part turmeric and two parts water) and mix thoroughly until it becomes a paste.
  • Put on fire and cook for 5-7 minutes with constant stirring.
  • The result is a thick paste, which must be cooled and transferred to a glass jar, which is stored in the refrigerator.

How to take golden milk:

  • The preventive course of admission is 40 days in a row, twice a year.
  • Therapeutic – longer, possible with breaks, until complete healing.
  • Another option is to periodically take “golden milk” on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Let's say, once every few days you take a little of this milk for prevention and for the purpose of healing and general rejuvenation of the whole body. There will be benefits, and they will be obvious!

Note:

  • So, before going to bed, boil a glass of milk, cool it a little, add a teaspoon of the turmeric paste you prepared and a little quality oil (ghee, almond, sesame oil are ideal) and stir. Take 1 – 1/3 teaspoon of oil per glass of milk.
  • Do not add honey to milk, but put a teaspoon of honey in your mouth, wait until it dissolves there, and then immediately drink it with a glass of golden milk.
  • It is not necessary to drink a whole glass of milk; you can prepare half a serving or a quarter, everything is individual in each case.
  • If you don't drink cow's milk, use plant-based milk. Yes, according to the classics, you need cow’s milk, and Ayurveda experts say that there is nothing better than cow’s milk. But, if you have a different opinion, or you are allergic to cow’s milk, or your body has a hard time eating cow’s milk, then you don’t need to insist and torture it: take turmeric with plant-based milk. It's better than not taking it at all!
  • Be sure to pay attention to the fact that it is better not to stir honey in milk, but to dissolve it in the mouth and then drink it with milk. In fact, you can do it as you like, but experts in the field of apitherapy say that honey, like a carbohydrate, dissolves and begins its absorption in the mouth, and if you drink it in one gulp, the effectiveness of the treatment drops many times.
  • Yogis also pay special attention to this point, and advise stirring honey in milk, or taking it as part of other drinks, holding each sip of the drink in your mouth, literally “chewing” it, mixing it with saliva, and then just swallowing it. Surely you have heard the ancient principle of nutrition: “eat liquid food, and drink solid food,” this is exactly what it’s about.

Many of you are familiar with one of the seasonings stored there from curry sauce, pilaf and other delicious popular oriental dishes.

It was from the east, or rather from India, where it was known long before the birth of Christ, that turmeric came to China in the 1st century AD. – Ancient Greece, and from there it spread everywhere, reaching Russia in 1909. The word “turmeric” is taken from Arabic, where it means “saffron”, that is, “yellow”, but many other names are also common (zarchava, turmeric, haldi, yellow ginger, Indian saffron and others).

This plant is the closest relative of ginger; in appearance, it is even difficult to distinguish them by their unpeeled root and beautiful bright flower. The obvious difference is that the turmeric root inside is brightly colored, ranging from dark orange to yellow.

In addition to its excellent coloring properties, turmeric is valuable for its high content of essential oils, vitamins and microelements. Content of nutrients (as a percentage of the daily value per 100 g) in descending order: manganese, iron, potassium, vitamin B6 (pyridokisn), copper, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin C, E (tocopherol), calcium, vitamin K , B2, B1, B4 (choline), B9 (folate), P (rutin), selenium, borneol.

The following are highlighted as useful properties:

  1. The plant pigment found in the root is curcumin, a polyphenol (phytonutrient). Modern research proves its effectiveness as an antioxidant and antitumor agent. Curcumin-based drugs are being developed to combat skin and breast cancer.
  2. This spice is a good natural antibiotic; adding it to foods prolongs the freshness of the prepared dish and also normalizes the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Turmeric is an excellent fat-breaker (Ayurvedic texts advise adding it to flour and vegetable oil powder and using this mixture to wash the body instead of soap).
  4. It has a tonic and antidepressant effect on the nervous system, relieves pain.
  5. Astringent, healing, hemostatic properties.
  6. Expels mucus from the body.
  7. Immunomodulatory effect.
  8. Improves appetite.
  9. Enhances the effect of certain substances and medications.

Medicinal properties of turmeric

Curcumin is already included in many modern medicines for a variety of ailments, and to this day, research on Indian saffron for use in medicine continues, since the range of its healing properties is amazing. Thus, turmeric is successfully used as a substance that:

  • thins the blood, improves its circulation, stimulates the formation of red blood cells, cleanses the blood of cholesterol, which is useful for atherosclerosis, thrombophlebitis, thrombosis, varicose veins, high blood pressure (due to the acceleration of blood, but at the same time constricts blood vessels, generally normalizes blood pressure ), anemia;
  • helps eliminate skin diseases due to the antibacterial and drying properties of curcumin, such as acne, pigment spots, dandruff (and with regular intake increases the body’s overall resistance to fungal diseases), seborrhea, furunculosis, eczema (still do not forget that the main cause of eczema is nerves) and others. You need to be careful - turmeric is also used against unwanted hair, slowing down its growth;
  • is an anti-inflammatory agent: turmeric works as a natural antibiotic, but without the side effects on the body's beneficial bacteria. Disinfects, promotes healing and gentle scarring of wounds, relieves swelling, resolves hematomas, treats burns (especially when mixed with aloe juice), while having a slight anesthetic effect (slightly relieves pain), normalizes the gastrointestinal tract, relieves increased gas formation, fights the bacteria that cause gastritis;
  • helps with hemorrhoids (used externally). Essential oils have a calming effect, curcumin stops bleeding, alleviates the patient’s condition, relieving swelling and pain;
  • reduces blood sugar in diabetes, improves general condition, it is recommended to use it together with the mumiyo tablet;
  • for arthritis and gout – curcumin stops the inflammatory process, reduces the activity of microbes that provoke joint destruction, and relieves pain;
  • restores damaged liver cells, fights toxins, has a choleretic effect, prevents the formation of stones, for example in cholecystitis;
  • relieves coughs, colds, bronchitis, pharyngitis - warm milk with butter (preferably ghee) and turmeric (you can also add honey) at night will facilitate mucus discharge, relieve inflammation, sore throat, and improve overall well-being;
  • effective for a runny nose, sinusitis - the spice has the ability to turn mucus into liquid and effectively remove it. You can take it orally, rinse your nose with it (half a teaspoon of salt and turmeric per glass of water, also gargle), burn it on coals (for example, for a hookah, but without saltpeter) and inhale the smoke (it can be difficult to light the powder just in a container) ;
  • for conjunctivitis (and other inflammatory eye diseases) it will ensure recovery - you need to boil a tablespoon of spice in a third of a glass, strain well and drop it into the eyes three times a day, or use a napkin moistened with the solution as a compress;
  • will alleviate the patient's condition during an asthma attack (especially allergic) - taken orally with milk or set on fire;
  • cures gingivitis (bleeding gums, tartar, unpleasant odor) - the longer curcumin acts on the oral cavity, the better it will help. You can rinse, chew the root (it’s not sharp like ginger, which also eats away the enamel, but you don’t have to swallow), and you can even whiten your teeth with turmeric! Prepare the paste: mix the same amount of spice with a teaspoon of any vegetable oil and brush your teeth for at least a minute, do not rinse for 3 minutes. This does not replace regular teeth brushing.
  • relieves headaches, back pain. It can also help to survive so-called cluster headaches (a series of high-intensity attacks). Turmeric is calming, acts as a mild anesthetic and is not addictive. Aromatherapy, drinking, and compress are used.
  • helps to avoid and cope with Alzheimer's disease. Scientifically proven fact: turmeric is legitimately used to treat neurological disorders (publication of the journal “Stem Cell Research & Therapy”, research from the Institute of Neurology and Medicine in Jülich, Germany). The main active ingredient here is an aromatic turmerone, which acts as a blocker of special cells of the central nervous system, which, in case of inflammation, provoke neurological disorders. Recent research has also shown that aromatic turmerone can renew cells in the brain, which is likely to help Alzheimer's and stroke survivors recover in the future.

Recipes with turmeric in folk medicine

In addition to the above methods of using turmeric, there are several other special recipes:

  • The first remedy for many of the ailments listed above (and more) is “golden milk”. To prepare, take 50 g of ground turmeric (4 tablespoons) and 100 ml of chilled boiled water (half a glass). Next, mix into a paste and simmer it over low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring - it should become homogeneous, thick and light brown. This mixture should be cooled and a teaspoon should be added to a glass of warm milk before use, the rest should be stored in the refrigerator (no more than a month). Some sources advise adding black pepper to the paste, which doubles the effect of turmeric, but remember that it is not always appropriate (for gastrointestinal diseases, for example). If you add honey, the temperature of the drink should be no more than 50 degrees. You can add oil.
  • For pharyngitis and gingivitis, turmeric is mixed with honey in equal proportions and kept in the mouth.
  • For anemia, you need 30-40 minutes daily. Before meals, eat a teaspoon of a mixture of 1/4 turmeric and 1 tsp. honey.
  • Compress to relieve pain and reduce swelling – 2 tsp. salt and 2 tsp. Mix turmeric with water to form a paste and apply to the bruised or inflamed area.
  • Prepare a mixture for joints from turmeric, honey and ginger - mix equal parts and eat half a teaspoon before meals on an empty stomach.
  • Medicinal tea. Brew 0.5 tsp. hot water, add 1 tsp. honey, drink before bed every day for two weeks.
  • Turmeric with kefir normalizes digestion and improves metabolism - 0.5 teaspoon of spice goes into a glass. By also adding cinnamon and ginger and replacing dinner with this drink, you will notice how the kilograms disappear.

Turmeric for weight loss

The above-described properties of turmeric can become your allies in the fight against obesity and further maintaining normal weight. In 2009, the journal Nutrition published an article about research by scientists at Tufts University (USA) who conducted experiments with mice, their fat cells and curcumin. It was found that curcumin inhibited the growth of new blood vessels in adipose tissue, and therefore the weight of the test subjects decreased.

Similar official studies have not been carried out on people, but many beauties have already found out experimentally the clear benefits of turmeric in matters of weight loss. To avoid developing allergies, do not exceed the recommended dose; the weight will not go away faster. Regularity and a healthy approach to the rest of your lifestyle are important here. The exact dose has not been established, but it is not recommended to use more than 3 g per day, and this amount should be divided into three doses.

Add it to soups, rice, stewed cabbage, okroshka, as well as green or herbal tea, drink with milk and kefir, as described above.

Turmeric in cosmetology

Hindus have hundreds of recommendations on this topic, backed by centuries of experience: turmeric is included in most Ayurvedic skin care products and is involved in various rituals in which turmeric paste is applied to the body and face.

In addition to its antibacterial properties, turmeric offers prolongation of skin youth by fighting free radicals, evens out tone, even whitens (surprisingly), the powder acts as a soft scrub, renewing cells.

To combat acne, it is good to mix turmeric with tea or sandalwood powder, lemon juice and make a mask, keeping it on your face for 10-20 minutes.

A mixture of turmeric with oil or boiled rice is applied to the abscess itself. To improve color, restore, and nourish the skin, turmeric is mixed with one of the dairy products: milk, sour cream, natural yogurt, pureed cottage cheese or lime (lemon) juice. The yellowness after the procedures goes away within 2-3 hours.

Turmeric in hair products makes hair golden, nourishes and adds shine, and also relieves seborrhea and dandruff.

For dandruff, you need to mix finely grated onion with yolk, 0.5 tsp. turmeric and 0.25 tsp. ground red pepper. Apply to the scalp and wrap with a towel. In general, the mask is designed to last for 45 minutes, but if the burning sensation cannot be tolerated, wash it off immediately. Use no more than three times a month.

A popular recipe for a nourishing mask with turmeric and fruit acids: freshly squeezed juice of 2 oranges, half an apple (preferably green), half a banana, 0.5 tsp. cumin, 1 tsp turmeric. Mix everything in a blender, apply to the roots, wrap with plastic and a towel, hold for 20-30 minutes. No more than 2 times a week.

Turmeric slows down hair growth - after hair removal, you can apply turmeric pulp with water to the skin to prolong the smoothness effect.

Turmeric contraindications

Turmeric should not be used during exacerbations and especially when taking special medications against gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and hepatitis.

The choleretic effect precludes the use of turmeric for patients with cholelithiasis (biliary tract abstruction). Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use turmeric under medical supervision.

Uses of turmeric

The best solution for preserving the maximum of nutrients is to buy dried roots and grind them yourself as needed, or buy high-quality ground turmeric (not on the market, but well packaged and not the cheapest).

Heat treatment of spices is not particularly dangerous, unlike improper storage. In order for turmeric to bring only benefits, remember the dosage: no more than a teaspoon per day when taken orally, and in each individual dish - on the edge of a knife.

Turmeric reviews and price

Basically, the reviews about the spice are good: it helps a lot against acne, many have already been convinced of this. Kefir with turmeric for weight loss and golden milk for colds are also hits among those who have tried these recipes on themselves and their loved ones. There are allergies and intolerances, but this is normal.

Prices for ground turmeric are relatively affordable, varying depending on the region, manufacturer (quality and brightness of packaging) and weight: from 20 rubles. for 40 g to 150 rubles per 100 g (on average it comes out to 350 rubles per kg). Whole roots sell for about 90 rubles per 40 g.
