He also postponed the celebration of the New Year to January 1, although before Peter the New Year was celebrated on September 1 according to the old style, otherwise - on September 14 according to the present.

The day of September 14 is still preserved as a starting point in the Russian Orthodox Church, from which the annual cycle of church services begins. True, 5508 years, cut off by the great reformer, did not survive here either. It's a pity! We could celebrate the year 7526 today and be proud that we have the oldest active calendar in the world.

Where did these 5508 additional years preceding the Nativity of Christ come from?

In common parlance, the old way of counting was called "From the Creation of the World." However, this is not entirely true. Calculating the age of the universe from the first day of creation is a thankless task. Only Protestant educators easily interpret one day of the Creator's work as one earthly day, one revolution of our planet around its axis. For them, self-confident know-it-alls, the holy Apostle Peter explained in the Second Congregational Epistle: "The Lord has one day, like a thousand years, and a thousand years, like one day." Therefore, it is more prudent to take the Six-Day Day, the six days of creation, outside the brackets of this time axis. As well as the indefinite period of stay of Adam and Eve in paradise, among the intact, different nature in which there could be a different time.

A much more correct name for the old chronology is "From Adam". It was also widely used in the Orthodox world. The figure of 5508 years from Adam to the birth of Christ was received by Dionysius the Small, trying to reconstruct the biblical history according to the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament. At the same time, Roman Christians, using the Latin translation of the Old Testament, the Vulgate, counted only 4,713 years. For some time this frame of reference was common in the Roman Church. But we cannot immediately reject the Roman account as foreign, Catholic, because at the time of the establishment of this chronology, no split in Christendom had yet occurred, and the Roman Church was also considered Orthodox.

The addition of 5508 years to the history of the Nativity of Christ is more accurately called not Orthodox, but Constantinople tradition. In other eastern churches - Alexandria, Antioch - there were chronological traditions similar to those of Constantinople: some added 5500 years, others 5504 years. Nevertheless, it was the system "5508+" that was officially adopted in Byzantium in 537. In Russia, it began to be used after Baptism, together with the annual church cycle, we adopted the countdown, as evidenced by the ancient Russian chronicles, but officially at the state level this the style was consolidated only in 1492, after the fall of Constantinople, when Moscow finally felt itself the Third Rome, the spiritual successor of Byzantium.

To recognize the countdown of the years "from Adam" as a sacred, truly Orthodox countdown sanctified by Christian dogmas is a clear exaggeration. Not a single Ecumenical Council has taken decisions on this matter, in the Orthodox Church there are no canons and rules according to which the new church year coming on September 14 should be considered the year 7526, and nothing else. True, in one of the rules of the Sixth Ecumenical Council there is a mention that a certain category of heretics, if they even return to the bosom of the mother Church, must repent before a certain day - and the date is indicated according to the Constantinople style. But this is a purely technical mention of the date of the secular calendar of the Byzantine Empire - just as in the documents of the modern Orthodox Church there are references with dates according to the Gregorian style adopted in the Russian Federation, which, of course, does not make the Gregorian style in any way sacred.

On this basis, we are not obliged to idolize the Byzantine chronology, recognizing it as the only correct one, but we must respect it: both as a memory of our past, and as a reference to world biblical history. If the modern calendar beginning with the Nativity of the Savior is the calendar of the New Testament, then our old Constantinople calendar is the calendar of both the Old and New Testaments together, a calendar of a single history of the spiritual struggle of mankind for salvation.

In the natural science environment, it is customary to be skeptical about the old Byzantine reckoning - "from the Creation of the world" or "from Adam", since the terms adopted there do not radically coincide with the age of the Universe or with the time of existence of Homo sapiens, calculated experimentally. However, as it may seem paradoxical, there is no irreconcilable contradiction between the calendar "from Adam" and the latest data of paleoanthropology.

Although the biological history of man counts, according to anthropologists, more than a hundred thousand years, but for a long period of this time it was hardly possible to talk about the existence of man in his metaphysical understanding. Man in the modern secular worldview, and even more so in the traditional Christian worldview, is a creature that is fundamentally different from animals.

How does a rational man differ from an animal from the point of view of natural knowledge? While his activities are aimed exclusively at reproducing the genus, at transferring his genes from generation to generation, he completely belongs to the biosphere, is part of the animal world. Homo sapiens can become a part of the noosphere (the sphere of reason), a creature of a different order only when he begins to pass on knowledge from generation to generation, and this knowledge, like genes, will acquire its matrix. In other words, Homo sapiens turned from a biological man, from the smartest beast into a reasonable man, into a noospheric man when he mastered writing.

And the emergence of the first elements of writing, as archaeologists confirm, just falls on a period very close to the period of the beginning of the biblical history. We are talking about the so-called Terteria pictograms in Europe and the Jiahu pictograms in China, dating back to the middle of the sixth millennium BC. Therefore, even the most inveterate skeptics have completely rationalistic reasons to follow the traditions of our ancestors and to celebrate on September 14 the coming of 7526 "from the first man", that is, "from the first reasonable man."

Among modern peoples, the citizens of Ethiopia saved the New Year's celebration in mid-September. True, they celebrate not the fourteenth, but the thirteenth September, due to the delay in the introduction of leap years. It turns out that Ethiopia is the last relic of the ancient Eastern Christian civilization, the Byzantine Ecumene, which also inherited the elements of the ancient Eastern Christian calendar.
