WE SEW A DRESS FROM STRETCH VELVET

All designers admitted that velvet has returned to the world of fashion with triumph! Now not only dresses and suits are made from it, but also gloves, shoes, trousers, shorts, and hats! Stretch velvet It’s not for nothing that it gained such popularity, because it is not only beautiful, but also very practical and comfortable to wear. A dress made of stretch velvet does not require additional decorations or accessories - the beautiful fabric makes it bright on its own.

Thanks to the stretch components, clothes made from this material fit perfectly and can be used to sew tight skirts, dresses, and tight blouses.

CHOOSE A VELVET DRESS. CUT

Once you have already decided on the color of the dress, you need to pay special attention to its cut. When choosing a velvet dress style, you should pay attention to your figure, hairstyle, facial features and eyes. It is often difficult to determine the style of a dress offhand if, for example, you are going to sew it yourself or order it from a seamstress.

When choosing a style, you can take into account the following rules:

  • For slender women, we choose a cut that emphasizes the figure.
  • Tall ladies will look good Long Dresses, and short - short or to the middle of the knee.
  • Overweight women do not need to choose dresses with ruffles and frills, and in problem areas (for example, on the stomach) you can make beautiful decoration(most often - a bow or drapery). This will not only add color to the velvet dress, but will also highlight your style.

Here and there you read: this material is difficult to work with... experienced dressmakers are reluctant to take on this capricious material...

VELVET REQUIRES A CAREFUL APPROACH, BUT NO MORE THAN OTHER FABRICS

In two evenings I sewed a dress from stretch velvet. I even came up with a name for this dress - VELVET PUMA

I am very pleased with this fabric and how it turned out. It is easier to sew from stretch velvet than from any other. Even unsewn cuts will look decent. I had a lot of fun!

Contrary to popular belief, IT TURNS out...

  • Stretch velvet fabric does not stick to debris, it does not wrinkle, even if you travel in a car or taxi on your holiday
  • Soft, comfortable to the body, like a second skin.
  • Thanks to its elasticity, it gently fits the figure and does not wrinkle in folds.
  • Thanks to its velvety texture, the fabric is not thin, so it does not outline all the imperfections of the figure.
  • Stretches perfectly - no zipper needed (I put it in in vain)
  • She doesn't need special care. Regular machine wash at 30 degrees and dry on hangers. Dot.

And that's not all the benefits of this wonderful fabric. Just thinking about her brings a holiday to my soul. The same will happen to you when you become more familiar with this wonderful knitwear.

We'll talk about how to sew in the next article.

Yes, there are several points that you need to know about and I will tell you about them in the next article. In the meantime, take a closer look at the offers on the shelves of fabric stores.

We have Korean-made stretch velvet, so far there are 450 steering wheels. It's cheaper than any knitwear. The most elegant dress will cost you no more than a thousand rubles.

And the most important thing is that for sewing a dress from stretch velvet, nothing but sewing machine and no needles are needed for knitwear.

DECATING VELVET.
Before cutting, I always recommend decating the fabric. But velvet cannot be decated in the usual way, and the natural threads in the fabric can shrink. In this case, you can do this: hang the fabric, make sure that it does not stretch out, and steam it with vertical steam without touching it with the iron. The procedure can be repeated twice.
Before starting work, you need to determine how you will care for the finished product: dry clean it (if it is a jacket, coat) or wash it? If you plan to wash the finished product, for example, if it is curtains, then you can immediately wash the fabric in the gentle wash mode.
Another way to decorate velvet, which I use most often, is to fold the fabric front side Be sure to iron the fabric inside and out with steam. Set the iron thermostat to 2. This way, the pile on the velvet is not crushed.
IMPORTANT: Always, before doing wet-heat treatment of fabric (iron), you should try on a small piece, the edge or corner of the fabric! Before cutting, I recommend doing a machine and overlock stitch along the edge, and adjusting the machine stitch. Open this line and iron it. Thus, see how the fabric reacts to the treatment. It doesn't matter what type of velvet you choose. Each fabric will react differently to the treatment.
OPEN THE VELVET.
Velvet is a fabric that has a pile. Therefore, it is very important to correctly cut out all the cut details with the same direction of the pile. You can determine the direction of the pile by hand or visually. By front side rub the fabric with your palm in the longitudinal direction and in the opposite direction. In one position the fabric will be smooth (the pile will be smoothed out), in the other it will be rough (the pile will rise). Visually, this can be seen this way: place the fabric on yourself and look from top to bottom. Then turn the fabric over and look again. You will see different shades of velvet.
I can’t say for sure how to properly cut velvet in the direction of the pile. I prefer a top-down direction. Or look in the mirror and cut it the way you like best.
Before cutting, you can use arrows to indicate the direction of the pile on the reverse side. If the velvet is thick, then it is advisable to cut out the parts in one layer, since the fabric may move due to the pile. Or chop off the parts with needles and cut them in two layers.
When cutting, it is important to follow the direction of the grain thread. So that in the finished product all the details are in the same shade of velvet.
If you accidentally made a mistake and cut out parts with the wrong direction of the pile, then such a part only needs to be redrawn. Otherwise, it will stand out in a different color when finished and ruin your mood.
SEWING VELVET.
Often velvet does not like to have machine stitches ripped out of it. Therefore, I advise you to use only proven patterns.
For sewing, you need to use thin needles (No. 75-90) and threads (No. 50-60). Don't make stitches that are too small. In my opinion optimal size stitch 0.3 mm for thin velvet and 0.4 mm for thick.
I recommend basting the cut details by hand and then machine stitching, as the nap causes the fabric to move. For example, two parts of the same size will not match when stitched. And one more thing: when sewing on a machine, you need to stretch the fabric, top and bottom at the same time - this is for a better match of the parts + reduces the fit of the fabric.
It is advisable to remove running stitches immediately so that no traces remain of them later.
Make seam allowances of 2 cm and it is advisable to immediately process the edges of the parts with an overlock or zigzag stitch, as they will “crumble”.
IRONING VELVET(wet-heat treatment of seams).
Iron the fabric with care, with a not very hot iron and always with steam. On the wrong side, we first iron the seams on both sides, this will eliminate the fit along the fabric that was created by machine stitching. Then I unroll the seams with my hands and lightly touch them with the iron, steam them and immediately press the seams with my fingers. I go through one seam 2-3 times in this way. After this, on the front side, without touching the fabric with the iron, I lift up the slightly crushed pile of the fabric with steam, or it is better to steam vertically. Drops of water may come out of the iron instead of steam and leave a mark on the fabric. This is how I ironed the cotton velvet sundress that you see in the photo.
DUPLICATION cut details.
On thick velvet, I do not sew the necessary details, so as not to thicken it even more. In this case, I “planted” the sundress on the lining fabric. You can also use organza.
On thin velvet, in order to duplicate parts, for example facings, you can use this method: connect the parts right sides to each other and glue the adhesive along the wrong side with an iron. In this case, before cutting, you must try everything on a piece.
CARE OF VELVET PRODUCTS.
Some items, such as jackets, jackets or coats, are best dry cleaned.
At home, I recommend washing by hand or using a gentle cycle. Preferably without spinning, as the velvet may become deformed. It is better to dry flat on a flat surface.
Over time, the pile on velvet gets crushed and the fabric wrinkles, so you can lift it and straighten it using vertical steaming.
Store velvet items hanging on hangers in the closet to avoid creases in the fabric.
I don’t sew with velvet very often, but I advise everyone to try it in their work. From my experience, I know that synthetic velvet is easier to sew than natural velvet. It is advisable to select the simplest styles. If you are sewing velvet for the first time, I recommend buying extra fabric. In case you make a mistake in cutting with the direction of the pile. I hope my tips will help. I wish you good luck in your endeavors.
