Ancient Yaroslavl land, like all of Holy Rus', is under the Protection of the Most Pure Mother of God.

As a sign of this, back in 1213, a cathedral was erected in Yaroslavl in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which became the main temple of the Yaroslavl principality, and subsequently the cathedral of the Yaroslavl diocese. In this temple there was a miraculous icon of Our Lady of Tenderness, which received the name Yaroslavl. It was this image that was a visible sign of the intercession of the Most Pure Mother of God for the land of Yaroslavl.

The Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God was one of the most ancient miraculous images of the Most Pure Mother of God in Orthodox Russia. It has been known since the 13th century and has already been covering the northern reaches of the Russian Land for seven centuries.

According to ancient legend, this icon was brought to the city of Yaroslavl in the 13th century. holy noble princes Vasily and Konstantin Vsevolodovich under Bishop Kirill II of Rostov (1231-1262).

The holy princes Vasily and Konstantin of Yaroslavl, who served to glorify the image of the Mother of God, had the opportunity to bear the cross of princely service in the first decades Tatar-Mongol yoke. This was the most cruel time when, by God’s permission, Batu’s hordes rushed to Rus', ruining everything in their path.

In 1238, on the banks of the Sit River, a tributary of the Volga, on the land of Yaroslavl, one of the most dramatic battles in Russian history took place. They died in an unequal battle Grand Duke Georgy Vsevolodovich, Yaroslavl prince Vsevolod Konstantinovich, father of princes Vasily and Konstantin. Prince Vasilko of Rostov was captured and tortured by the Tatars in the Sherensky forest.

It was at this time that Prince Vasily, together with his younger brother Konstantin, brought to the city a new image of the Mother of God of Tenderness, which later received the name Yaroslavl Icon. The image was placed in the oldest stone cathedral in Yaroslavl.

The defeat of the Russian army, the death of the princes, the destruction of cities and villages produced horror and confusion among the people. The bringing of the image of the Most Pure Intercessor was supposed to strengthen the spirit of the people in the face of cruel invaders.

Tradition is silent about where the Yaroslavl icon was brought from, but there are versions that it was from Vladimir or Kyiv.

It is significant that the brother princes did not take part in any internecine feuds among the Russian princes.During the times of mournful civil strife that tore apart the body of the Russian land and allowed the Tatars to captivate Rus', this example of brotherly love became the basis and image of the unity of the Russian land.Even under the conditions of foreign yoke, Prince Vasily found the opportunity to build new churches.

The service of the God-loving prince was short-lived. Apparently, he was spiritually ripe for the Kingdom of Heaven. In the winter of 1249, Prince Vasily Yaroslavsky went to Vladimir-on-Klyazma to meet with the holy noble Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, whom he supported in his endeavors. There, Prince Vasily Vsevolodovich unexpectedly fell seriously ill and reposed in the Lord on February 8.

The coffin with the honorable remains of the untimely deceased prince was escorted from Vladimir to Yaroslavl by Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky himself, together with cousins deceased by princes Boris and Gleb Vasilkovich. This became an expression of respect and general sadness for the young but spiritually mature prince.

Prince Vasily was buried in the Assumption Cathedral under the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God. The principality began to be ruled by him younger brother Konstantin.

On July 16, 1257, Prince Constantine was killed in a battle with the Mongol-Tatars. The body of the faithful sufferer was also buried in the Assumption Cathedral Church next to the resting place of his brother Prince Vasily - near the image of the Most Pure Mother of God. Even during burial, the holy princes were not separated and showed an image of the inextricable bonds of brotherhood in Christ.

The old cathedral burned down and a new Assumption Cathedral was built.

In 1504, the found relics of princes Vasily and Constantine were transferred to the new Assumption Cathedral, and openly placed in the chapel dedicated to their memory, on the right side between the pillars under the ancient family princely icons.

Along with the relics, the revered prayer icon of the holy prince-passion-bearers, the Yaroslavl Mother of God, was solemnly transferred. The image was placed in the main iconostasis of the cathedral in the local row as the main shrine of Yaroslavl. The majestic Assumption Cathedral became the House of Our Lady of Yaroslavl.

Soon after the completion of the construction of the Assumption Cathedral, the Sovereign of the entire Russian Land came to Yaroslavl King John III to venerate the holy relics of their ancestors and the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God.

During the Time of Troubles, when Moscow was captured by Polish invaders, Yaroslavl became the temporary capital of the Russian state. The so-called "Council of the Whole Earth." Accordingly, the Yaroslavl icon became at this time the main prayer icon of Rus' .

In the summer of 1612, the formation of the people's militia continued in Yaroslavl under the leadership of Kozma Minin and Prince Dimitry Pozharsky, who arrived from Nizhny Novgorod. About 20,000 militia gathered here. In the Assumption Cathedral, before the face of the Yaroslavl Mother of God, Prince Dimitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky accepted the blessing from Metropolitan Kirill of Rostov and, at the head of the people’s militia, moved to Moscow. The liberation of the Mother See marked the beginning of a new page in the history of the Russian state.

The beginning of the reign of the Royal House of Romanov is also associated with the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God. Yaroslavl became the first city to greet, on March 21, 1613, the young Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov, who had just been elected to the throne, on his way from Kostroma to Moscow. From here he sent a letter to the Zemstvo Duma, announcing his consent to accept the royal crown. The Yaroslavl icon became one of the images before which the newly elected Russian Tsar prayed.

Three centuries later, in the year of the tercentenary of the Romanovs, the last Russian Sovereign, Tsar-Martyr Nikolai Alexandrovich, who visited Yaroslavl in 1913, prayed at the same image.

In 1918, during the anti-Bolshevik so-called. "Yaroslavl rebellion" Bolshevik commanders opened heavy artillery fire on peaceful Yaroslavl, shells also hit the ancient Assumption Cathedral, which was badly damaged, however, miraculously, not a single fragment touched the face of the Yaroslavl Mother of God.

In 1922, the contract with the community of believers of the Assumption Cathedral was terminated, the cathedral was closed for worship, and its building was transferred to the labor exchange. At the same time, the bells were thrown down and the bell tower was dismantled to its foundations. The dropping of the bells was captured in photographs - “for history.” A public toilet was installed in the church gatehouse.

Since that time, traces of the Yaroslavl icon have been lost .

In the 1930s The temple premises were used as a grain warehouse. At the height of the “five-year plan of godlessness” in 1937 the Assumption Cathedral was blown up for the construction of a cultural and recreation park for workers.

This place has been empty for 70 years. Now the cathedral has been rebuilt.

An art researcher describes the iconography of the image as follows:: « Characteristics the iconographic type of “Our Lady of Yaroslavl” is the pose of the Baby, depicted to the right of the mother, gently pressing his cheek to Her cheek and affectionately holding Her chin; the position of the hands of the Mother of God is not supporting, but attracting the fragile Infant body to Herself; edge of maforia - thrown over left hand Mary and, as it were, shelters and protects the child. The immense sadness of the wide-open eyes of the Mother of God, looking into oblivion, the desire to protect and protect the Baby from danger, to prolong the days of serene childhood, foreshadow the coming trials prepared for both: the death of the Son on the cross, the sorrow and despair of the Mother. It seems deeply symbolic, which is characteristic of this iconographic version the position of Mary’s hands echoes the gesture of the Mother of God in the icons of “Our Lady of Sorrows” and some compositions of the Crucifixion, resurrecting the most dramatic episode in the life of the Blessed Virgin».

In 1998, Yaroslavl also acquired the ancient Yaroslavl icon. However, this icon is only a copy of the original image and previously it was located in the now flooded Rybinsk reservoir Leushinsky monastery courtyard of the St. Petersburg monastery.

Currently, an ancient copy (copy) of the Yaroslavl icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary is in the Yaroslavl church Spasa na Goruda.

Very soon after the invasion of Khan Batu, the icon became known everywhere in Rus'. The Mother of God, revealing Her image, seemed to have visited the Russian land, bringing with her consolation to these scary days sorrow, pain and despair. After the Assumption Cathedral in Yaroslavl burned down in 1501, the relics of the holy princes were discovered after the fire. For these relics, according to a decree specially issued by Tsar Ivan III, a stone temple was erected. The holy relics found after the fire were placed between the pillars of the newly built church. They placed the relics under the ancient family icons, and among these icons was the miraculous “Yaroslavl” icon of the Mother of God. After some time, the lower temple of the Church of the Prophet Elijah was consecrated in honor of the Yaroslavl icon. The image was very widely and deeply revered, as evidenced by the fact that many copies were made of the icon during the 15th–16th centuries.
When a period of disasters began for people, the Yaroslavl icon was especially revered. Residents of the city of Yaroslavl prayed before the icon, asking the Mother of God to protect the city from misfortunes. This was, for example, the fire that occurred in the city in 1501. And the Mother of God helped people. Tradition says that Minin and Prince Pozharsky placed prayers in front of the image in 1612.

It is noteworthy that during the so-called Yaroslavl rebellion, which occurred in the city in 1918, they also remembered the miraculous icon and revered it, offering prayers to the Mother of God and asking for Her protection.

The iconography of the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God belongs to the “Tenderness” type. This iconographic type developed in the 13th century. The “Yaroslavl” icon served as a prototype for many Russian versions of the “Tenderness” iconography, which are associated with locally revered miraculous images.

The Mother of God is depicted with the Child in her arms. Christ is on the right side. The head of the Most Holy Theotokos is tilted towards the Child, the faces of the Mother and the Son touch. Christ sits upright, holding his Mother's chin with his hand. The soles of His legs are close together.

Before us is one of the oldest and most revered shrines of the Russian Land - the miraculous Yaroslavl Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Child Christ is depicted in the arms of the Mother of God on the right side. The head of the Queen of Heaven is tilted towards the Son, Their faces touch. This is one of the belt variants of the iconographic type “Tenderness” (in Greek “Eleousa”), which developed in the 13th century. On icons of this type, there is no distance between the Mother of God, symbolizing the entire human race, and the Infant God, they are pressed cheek to cheek, their love is limitless. Very little information has been preserved about the history of this image. But the main thing is known - this is the first icon revealed by the Mother of God to people during the era of the Tatar-Mongol yoke. It happened in Yaroslavl in the middle of the 13th century.

The icon was brought to the city from Kyiv by the holy noble princes, brothers Vasily and Konstantin Vsevolodovich, and installed in the Assumption Cathedral of the city. Princes Vasily and Constantine showed before the face of all Rus' the image of spiritual brotherhood in Christ. It is significant that they did not take part in the internecine strife that tore apart the body of the Russian land and allowed the Tatars to capture Rus'. The Church called the princes passion-bearers, since they laid down their lives for the Orthodox faith and the Russian land, and established the celebration of the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God on the day of the discovery of their relics, June 21 (new style).

The appearance of the icon occurred at a difficult time for Rus'. Blood flowed in rivers, cities and villages burned in flames. And the residents of Yaroslavl, gripped by horror, perceived the appearance of the icon as a miraculous manifestation of the mercy of the Mother of God, extending a helping hand in the fight against foreigners. After all, this was precisely the image of “Tenderness,” expressing the deepest maternal care of the Mother of God. Tearful prayers before this icon warmed the souls of people in the coming times of sorrow.

To the help of the Mother of God before her miraculous icon especially called out in times of national disaster. Yaroslavl residents prayed before her during the great fire in the city in 1501.

The most important events in the history of Russia took place before the face of the Yaroslavl Mother of God. During the Time of Troubles, when Moscow was captured by Polish invaders, Yaroslavl became the temporary capital of the state. The so-called “Council of the Whole Earth” was located here, under which the Mother of God “Yaroslavl” became the main prayer icon of Rus'. On July 28, 1612, the formation of the people's militia under the leadership of Kozma Minin and Prince Dimitry Pozharsky was completed in Yaroslavl. 20,000 militiamen received a blessing from the Rostov Metropolitan Kirill in front of the face of the Yaroslavl Mother of God and moved towards Moscow. The liberation of the Mother Throne through the prayers of the Queen of Heaven marked the beginning new page history of the Russian state.

It was here, in Yaroslavl, on March 21, 1613 that the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God met the young Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov, who had just been elected to the throne. After praying before the miraculous icon, he sent a letter to the Zemstvo Duma, announcing his consent to accept the royal crown. Three centuries later, in the year of the tercentenary of the House of Romanov, the last Russian Passion-Bearer Nicholas Alexandrovich, who visited Yaroslavl in 1913, prayed at the same icon.

Copies of this revered icon are also kept in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery.

The miraculous image of the Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God was lost during Soviet times. Now in Yaroslavl there is an ancient copy of this icon, which was found in 2002.
