Finally, the time has come to talk about my husband and I’s trip to Cambodia.
The trip was 2 weeks and consisted of 2 parts - Angkor Wat (Siem Reap city sightseeing) and Sihanoukville ( beach holiday). I also wanted to see the monuments - to enrich myself spiritually and, of course, to swim and lie on the beach.

So, first of all, we developed a route - we read where Angkor Wat is, in which city and how and what to fly there, and then we began to look at where to go to the sea. At sea we also decided to go to Cambodia (Sihanoukville), since we had already been to nearby Thailand. I somehow didn’t want to go to Vietnam...
We read about Sihanoukville - the reviews were good, and it was easy to get there - either by local airlines (the flight takes an hour, costs about 9 thousand rubles there back), but you need to keep in mind that they often fly small propeller-driven airplanes! (some are afraid of this, but we liked it :) the main thing is to choose a place not next to the propeller!
There are flights to Sihanoukville from both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
We also heard about transfers by buses and cars from the same cities, but I can’t say anything about the cost and time.

The main flight chosen was Aeroflot (about 9 hours flight) Moscow-Bangkok. We took Aeroflot because of the bonus miles that my husband had accumulated :). We buy tickets this way very often - a nice Aeroflot bonus :)
Then booked our stay through Booking.com
In Siem Reap we chose the Angkor resort spa hotel because of its fairly large area and pool.
In Sihanoukville, we liked the Sokha resort hotel - we also chose this hotel because of its large territory and its own beach!!!
In Bangkok, on the way back, we booked the Millenium Hilton hotel for one night, since our return flight to Moscow was the next day in the morning.
So, the first flight took place :)

We arrived in Bangkok in the morning (Suvarnabhumi Airport) and our next plane to Siem Reap was at 18:00.
We changed some money at the airport (for a high-speed train to the center and a tuk-tuk) - 300 baht, which turned out to be 10 dollars or 600 Russian rubles.
My husband and I checked our things into a storage room (open 24 hours a day, one suitcase costs about 150-200 baht), and then took the “high-speed metro” (costs 50 baht one way, from the airport to the center only 30 minutes) to the center to get to the observation deck of the tower.
The weather was sunny, but stuffy :)
From the final metro station we also took a local tuk-tuk all the way to the tower.
We made it before the Chinese! After everyone looked, at the exit we saw numerous buses filled with Chinese!!! There were sooo many of them.
There in the tower, we got to the buffet with fresh fruit. There are a huge amount of fruits (watermelon, papaya, dragon fruit, pineapple, etc.), as well as desserts in the form of multi-colored rice :) and some jellies :)
Coconut water was offered as a drink :)
Educational and tasty :), but only if you are ready for such a non-standard breakfast :)
Then fatigue reached us:) after all, the flight was long:) and not entirely sober (during the flight a new Russian-Polish union was formed, which was accompanied by numerous toasts to a new acquaintance:), vows of eternal friendship:) between us and our wonderful new friend - Marcin)

Well, in general, the eyes closed on their own, even if you put in a match...our new friend invited us to his hotel, but we decided that we would go to a local street Spa - we would sleep, and they would also give us a massage :)
We chose 2 hours of Spa (costs about 700 rubles per person) and tried to relax :).
In general it turned out good deed:) you just need to be prepared for the chattering masseuses :), which my husband and I got :)
We returned to the airport :) and accidentally saw that there is a SPA at the airport :) just like the hotel :)
In general, my husband and I came to the conclusion that after a 9-hour flight it’s hard to stagger around and wait for the next plane, which will only arrive in the evening :). You still need to think about getting some sleep.

So, the next flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap was around 18 hours and within an hour we were in the city of Temples :)
We were met at the airport and taken to the hotel. The journey from the airport to the hotel took about 20 minutes.
It was already dark in the city. By the way, it gets dark there already around 18.20, and the sun rises at 6.20. Therefore, when planning your excursions to temples in Siem Reap, you need to take this into account and not forget about the heat from 13-15 hours.
Our excursions began from meeting the dawn :) until 12 o'clock. Then we went to the hotel to lie around, swim and relax, and already at around 15.30 our guide picked us up again.
About the guide:) My husband found our guide Oleg via the Internet. We got in touch, discussed the details and agreed on 2 days of excursions (large and small circle of Angkor Wat) from 5.30 am to 12 pm and from 15.30-18.30 pm. All excursions were in Russian and plus we were assigned a car for all 2 days).
Of course, seeing the sunrise and incredible sunsets among the temples of Angkor Wat cannot fail to leave a mark on your heart and soul :)

We also visited the night street of Siem Reap - Pub street, something like Walking street.
Very party-like, playing music bands and there are a huge number of European tourists around. Many beautiful restaurants in European style and local. Among the dishes offered there are pizza, French cheeses, frogs, crocodile and much more :) there is even happy pizza (but we didn’t take it because the guide warned that the locals, with the best intentions, put so much in there to make us Europeans happy - and then all local hospitals are filled with such happy tourists at night :))
Drinks include a huge number of French, Chilean, Australian wines and branded, stronger drinks. The cost is a bottle of wine from 18 dollars. A meal for two with wine starts from $25 (for two).
It’s interesting that everywhere near any temple, starting from Angkor Wat, there are a huge number of cafes where, after watching the sunrise, you can have breakfast with delicious specialty coffee (cappuccino, mochaccino, the choice is like in Sturbucks) and fresh croissants :)
I was extremely delighted with this!!!
Gentlemen, Cambodia is a former colony of France!!! And therefore, lovers of French pastries, wine and cheese, tremble!!! It's all here!!! Moreover, the local supermarket (we couldn’t pass by out of curiosity:) has a good selection of French cheeses and wines!

The fact that Cambodia is a former French colony is also evidenced by the architecture of the hotels, of which there are a huge number. Mostly it is French colonial style. The hotels are luxurious and you want to look at them and look at them...
The very combination of Khmer-style hotels and their French neighbors is interesting :)
And of course it catches your eye a large number of casually dressed but chic French tourists, whose melodious speech spreads throughout all the temples we visit. Here and there you can hear merci :). This is impressive and for some reason it brings a stupid smile to my face.

This winter in Cambodia has turned out to be one of the coldest. However, in Thailand and other countries South-East Asia This phenomenon has been observed for the third year, since 2013. Temperatures drop to extremes at night, unprepared residents of countries that are warm by definition are chattering their teeth in horror and putting on all the warm clothes they have. Philanthropists are hastily collecting blankets and sweatshirts from the northern countries, because it seems to us funny frosts up to plus five actually turn into real victims - I remember there were reports in the press about deaths due to extreme frosts.

Weather in Sihanoukville by month

  1. January 2016.
The weather was sunny during the day almost the entire month, and there were no completely cloudy days at all. Maybe for an hour or two the sun hid behind the clouds, but that was not for long.
However, there was no scorching heat. The weather was mostly pleasant - cool by Cambodian standards, dry and almost always with a fresh breeze. If it was really hot in the open sun, then in the shade it was always and everywhere comfortable - no street fans were needed.
The temperature remained on average at 28.

At night it is cool to frosty, just like in December. For several nights we chatted our teeth, huddled under a warm blanket and longed for cozy pajamas with bunnies. Traditionally, we didn’t use either air conditioning or a fan at night—there was no need. Sometimes they even closed the windows on purpose to retain some heat.
According to the testimony of friends and neighbors - happy owners of thermometers, the temperature at night dropped to 15 Celsius. It's very, very, VERY cold in Cambodia!
The sea was cool, very cool. If the weather is also windy, and there is almost always a noticeable breeze, you don’t want to swim. And we swam a little. The water temperature was allegedly also kept at 28 degrees.
A couple of times some indistinct rains fell - even the red dust of the clay roads could not be beaten down for five minutes.
In short, January turned out to be traditionally cool and very dry.
Compared to Pattaya, the air in Sihanoukville is always a little drier - the clothes on the body get wet less, the skin is not so sticky, and the clothes dry faster. Perhaps the reason is only the constant breeze.

  2. February 2016.
The weather was about the same as in January. Only three times there were heavy but short-lived showers at night. The sea warmed up towards the end of the month, and the gift of the climate was a few cool cloudy days in the last week. the average water and air temperature continued to remain at 28 Celsius.

Spring is ahead. IN tropical climate It's not the most pleasant season in Cambodia - it's coming heatwave, the temperature during the day rarely drops below 30, the nights are stuffy, and there is no rain at all. I will prepare the next report on climate observations in Sihanoukville in early June - I will talk about the weather in March, April and May.

Finally, a couple of colorful shots taken in February. It was the most comfortable Cambodian weather of the year!

With wishes of eternal summer in your soul and sunny mood, sincerely yours, Marta. Cambodia, Sihanoukville, March 2016
