How to get there

You can get to Beruwala from the main airport in Colombo. The easiest way is to rent a taxi near the airport building, but the cost of such a trip is quite high - about 7,000 rupees (about 55 dollars). It is much cheaper to use public transport.

By bus

A bus trip will cost 60 rupees. From the airport you need to take bus number 187 to Colombo. All buses arrive at the station, here you need to change to a flight to Beruwela. The main attraction of Beruwela is considered to be one of the oldest mosques on the island - the Ketchimalai Daga Mosque, built by the Muslim religious community on a small flat hill at the landing site of the first Arab settlers.

The building is located at the end of the port. From an architectural point of view, the Kechimalai Mosque is a mixture of Muslim and slightly Indian design styles. During the 2004 tsunami, the building was practically undamaged; local religious people believe that this is a consequence of Allah’s miracle, but, in fairness, it is worth noting that this area was almost not damaged by the tsunami at all compared to the Southern Province.

Made, like the entire mosque, from white stone, the traditional minarets are surprisingly harmoniously combined with Indian elements in decoration. According to one legend, the construction of the mosque was started by the Arabs immediately after landing on the shore. Yemen's Sultan Ash-Sheikh Asharaf Waliullah, considered a saint by pilgrims, was buried in the mosque.
