Games with a large map and freedom of action. Action online games with an open world

Hello friends! An overview of the best open-world games in which you can run wherever you want and complete tasks that you yourself wanted to take and complete. The order in which the games are described is determined by chance; it is quite difficult to say which one is the best. Each of them is good and has its own unique features, gameplay atmosphere and world. So let's go to the best Open World games.

Fallout 1,2,3,4 New Vegas

The area of the Fallout 4 world is 78 square meters. km.

The area of the Fallout 3 world is 54 square meters. km.

Fallout is a whole series of post-apocalyptic computer games. The first Fallout appeared back in 1997, and immediately gained popularity among players. Fallout provided its own role-playing system in the game - complete freedom of action in the game, where only you decide what kind of character you will have, which path you will take, what abilities you can have, who to communicate with and who to help. The second part was released in 1998.

Screenshots:

10 years later, the third part was released which completely changed the gameplay of the game and graphics, but the game retained the same atmosphere and role-playing. Fallout 3 was followed by Fallout: New Vegas and most recently the fourth part.

Finding yourself in an open and unknown world, you will have to visit new places, see various settlements of people, mutants, merchants, slave traders, a children’s cave, explore abandoned shelters and the catacombs of the former metro. Only you decide which way to go, rob everyone and kill on your way or help everyone in need. Your decisions will determine how you finish the game. You can decide to blow up a city of people with an atomic bomb, or save them by defusing the bomb, help slave traders look for slaves, or stop their activities forever. At the end of the game you will have to decide who should live in a post-apocalyptic world and who should die.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA)

The area of the GTA 5 world is 81 square meters. km.

GTA began its march back in 1997 and this moment it already includes 15 episodes. GTA is an action game in which the player does whatever he wants in various fictional cities and counties based on real cities in the United States: for example, such as San Andreas, San Fierro, Liberty City, and so on.

Screenshots:

Complete freedom to act, if you want to beat or kill someone, steal a car, a helicopter, an airplane - please. Invest money in a bank or in some shares, buy several houses for yourself, a car, a yacht. In short, a city with full possibilities, in which people will not look at you askance if you did something wrong, in extreme cases they will simply take out a gun and shoot you, but it’s not scary, you can always start from the save point.

The latest released series is GTA 5. In the game we can control and play three characters by switching between them. The game has added even more variety. You can play golf, do yoga, go to the gym, and so on.

Assassin's Creed

The area of the Assassin's Creed world is 10 square meters. km.

Assassin's Creed is an action-adventure game that already has 9 episodes, in each of which the action takes place in different times and in different points peace. The plot of all series is based on the traditional confrontation between two warring factions of the Templars and the Assassins.

Screenshots:

For example, the first part takes place simultaneously in 2012 and 1191 during the Crusades, main character games with the help of a device, the Animus will participate in the life of its ancestor. In the third part, the action takes place in America from 1754 to 1783. The game will take place in the West Indies during the heyday of piracy.

Assassin's Creed is an open world in which we can move wherever we want and complete various tasks, but unfortunately we do not influence the endings of the game. Endings happen as they are planned and we cannot choose the outcome paths. But Assassin's Creed is a game of its own atmosphere. For example, Black Flag is suitable for lovers of marine themes. Most of the game takes place on our own ship, the Jackdaw, on which we can capture other ships, board them, hunt sea animals and animals on the islands. Assassin's Creed is distinguished by an unusual historical atmosphere of the times.

Mass Effect 1.2 3

The first part of Mass Effect was released in 2007. In the game we have to play for Captain Shepard, in the distant future, when earthlings went into space, and interact with many other extraterrestrial civilizations and races. Shepard will be the first Earthling to be accepted into the special Spectrum unit. The Specter obeys only the council of the Citadel, which includes several alien races.

Screenshots:

Traveling through space on the ship "Normandy SR-1", you will be able to move both along the tasks of the storyline and complete additional tasks. Mass Effect is not completely open world. Yes, we can move around the station and complete a task or move to another point in space, but there is still some kind of linearity in the game, there are just a lot of tasks.

The main feature of the game is the system of dialogues with different characters that we meet in the game. By choosing an answer option, in the dialogue we can influence the actions of the character with whom we are communicating; separate branches of dialogue also appear, with good leveling of the ability. We can use charm or intimidation to influence the player. The way we interact with the characters is how we develop a relationship with them. Shepard may have sex with an alien. The finale and death of many of your allies and assistants in each unit can determine the degree of preparation of the squad and Shepard himself, who you send on a certain mission, and so on.

Mafia II

The area of the Mafia II world is 25.9 square meters. km.

The first part of Mafia, which was released in 2004, was a breakthrough at that time. Excellent graphics and gameplay (for that time, of course), the atmosphere of the game, where a simple taxi driver earning crumbs will suddenly be lucky and have the opportunity to become a member of a mafia family. In terms of atmosphere and plot, I can say this is one of the best games. Yes, it has an open world, but it is not as diverse as in Mafia II.

Screenshots:

Mafia II only came out in 2010. If you haven't played this game, you've missed out on a lot in the gaming industry. America after the Second World War, young soldier Vito comes home for a few days to take a break from the war. He meets his old friend Joe, who gave him a certificate that he is no longer fit for military service. And Vito and Joe work for the mafia and begin to work for the mafia in order to become full members of the family. As a result, the heroes will be faced with the question of friendship or family!?

If you want to have your favorite car in the game, then just steal it, drive it into the garage, change the numbers and paint it. Do you need money for good clothes? Then steal a car and sell it, or rob a jewelry store, or, in the end, rob the clothing store itself.

While driving around the city, you can listen to the radio and music of those times, switching stations, complete tasks for various characters, explore the city, or move along the main plot at any time. This game has an open world, its own amazing world with an atmosphere in the style of “The Godfather”, which you completely immerse yourself in and enjoy.

The Elder Scrolls

Square world The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim - 39 sq. km.

The Elder Scrolls series computer role-playing games. The Skyrim series, released in 2011, became the most popular. Like previous games in the series, Skyrim allows the player to freely travel through the vast game world, exploring it and finding new places and tasks on their own. Skyrim takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim on the mainland of Tamriel, two hundred years after the events of previous game series.

Screenshots:

The main storyline of the game is connected with the appearance of the powerful dragon Alduin in Skyrim; The main character, the Dragonborn, is entrusted with the task of stopping the return of the dragons and defeating Alduin. Skyrim retains the large, open world concept of The Elder Scrolls series.

The player can freely wander throughout the province of Skyrim, which includes nine large cities, many small villages, as well as vast expanses of wild lands and high mountains. In cities, the player can indulge in activities such as cooking and potions, farming, ore working, or blacksmithing. However, the developers note that the gameplay can take about 300 hours.

The game received many positive reviews and awards. It became the best game of the year and the best role-playing game of the year. Our website also includes .

Sleeping Dogs

Release date: 2012 Sleeping Dogs is a Hong Kong action movie with a martial arts and oriental theme. The main process of the game is based on fights, and missions begin in the middle of the game in which weapons take a central place. The city map was created based on the real-life city of Hong Kong.

Screenshots:

Sleeping Dogs puts players in the role of Wei Shen, an undercover agent tasked with taking down the Hong Kong Triad from within. As players discover neon-lit streets and bustling shopping arcades, a story of loyalty and betrayal unfolds. To destroy the criminal gangs of Hong Kong, Wei will infiltrate the criminal triad criminal group. Well, what can I say, this is an open world in which the main task is to fight using various items around you and the opportunity to explore gaming Hong Kong.

Far Cry series

The area of the Far Cry 4 world is 32 square meters. km.

The area of the Far Cry 5 world is 49 square meters. km.

Specifically about the last part of the game and the best part that is worth playing. Far Cry 3 release date 2012. One of the action genre, the fourth part is only improved, but the gameplay is the same. Specifically about the third part The main character, Jason Brody, goes on vacation with friends to the unusually beautiful tropical island of Rook Island. After making a parachute jump, he and his friends are captured by local pirates. He manages to escape and then ends up with the head of the local resistance. You will have to go through a difficult path from a simple guy who has never held a weapon in his hands to a tough fighter.

Screenshots:

In Far Cry, the hero can move around the entire island from location to location, recruiting and completing various tasks, which he can complete or not. Unlike the second part, which many call, to put it mildly, a so-so game, this part really surprises with its open world. When you start exploring the island in search of adventures to your liking, you simply immerse yourself in this open world, forgetting about the main storyline in the game. Isn't this an indicator of a good open world in the game?

South Park The Stick of Truth

At the time of writing this review of open world games, the very popular game “South Park The Stick of Truth” was released. If you know the popular cartoon South Park, then this game is based on it. A game where everything makes you smile or laugh. For example, the main characters' super attacks are the use of their own farts. You can launch a Stink Charm, a Whisperer, or a Dragon's Roar at an enemy. The game has a very small world, limited to a small town, but it is interesting to explore it, meet new characters, receive tasks and also wander around other people's apartments.

Screenshots:

In the game you can fight Nazi zombies, use an alien anal probe to move through walls, fight miniature gnomes right under your parents making love, and dodge your dad's balls in time. In short, there will be a lot of interesting things to do during the game. The game is played quickly and in one breath, and in the end you regret that there are so few tasks. Overall I recommend the game.

Batman: Arkham City

One of the best games about Batman, a city filled with criminals in the action-adventure genre. The game includes puzzles, active use of “Detective Mode”, in which the skeletons of enemies are highlighted, hints appear and serve to perform various examinations, such as tracking the flight of a sniper’s bullet. The player has access to a criminal database that tracks major villains throughout the city.

Screenshots:

In addition to the main ones, there are also secondary tasks involving key characters. The player can move silently, avoiding encounters with prisoners and other enemies. You can also use gadgets to take out enemies without making much noise. If Batman enters the battle, then the improved combat system from the previous game comes into play, allowing you to dodge several enemies at once, quickly react to blows from objects and use all gadgets in battle. Free movement around the city is a little difficult, since it is completely occupied by various gangs led by the Joker, Penguin and Two-Face

The developers note the maturity of their game world, as well as the fact that their characters are driven by ordinary human (or non-human) needs, passions and feelings, and not by some abstract forces like good or evil

Screenshots:

The game world is inhabited by various races - people, elves, dwarves, as well as a wide variety of monsters. Some characters in the dialogues quote the text of Sapkowski's works verbatim. These optional quests are available between story missions.

Screenshots:

The Saints Row series is distinguished by the degree of freedom given to the player - he decides what to do. Unlike most action games, which present a sequential series of levels with linear progression, in Saints Row the player chooses which tasks to complete. Depending on this, relationships with various organizations may change. The use of transport in an urban environment provides a simulation of the resemblance of a real city, right down to pedestrians reacting to traffic lights.

Controlling a superhero, it will be up to you to prevent the Joker and the psychopaths under his command from creating chaos in the city.

No. 9. Fallout 4

Among post-apocalyptic games, the Fallout series rightfully occupies one of the first positions in the opinion of gamers. Already the first part brought diversity to the gaming world, giving it something new and unprecedented before. And it came out 20 years ago - in 1997. It was the first part that predetermined the success of the entire series.

With all the advantages of each part, the game Fallout 4 has become the most iconic. It is in it that the so-called free mode is available. The choice of skills and abilities of the main character rests entirely with the user.

No. 8. Dead Island: Riptide

Gamers are especially fond of games about zombies. A striking example of an action game of this genre is the game Dead Island: Riptide. In the story on which the game is based, zombies attacked a tropical resort. There are a large number of people here on summer vacation, who are being destroyed one by one by these fictional killers. Only one person can resist the zombies - the main character. The lives of other people are in his hands.

Dead Island: Riptide pleased gamers who pay attention to physics. For example, the weather may change depending on what the character does. This is especially true for the third part, developed on a new engine. This engine ensures that the performance parameter will be at its best.

No. 7. Far Cry 3

In the third part of Far Cry, you can make your own decisions about which direction to move. Finding enemies is the main task for the main character. However, no one forces him to carry out the proposed missions. In the same way, you can simply move around the area, studying its features.

Complete freedom of action makes it possible to use the entire terrain. In addition to bandits, you can also find wild animals on the island. These unpleasant creatures can attack the main character at the most unexpected moments. However, at night they are especially aggressive. For safety reasons, to survive, the gamer will need to build a shelter for himself.

No. 6. Gothic 2

The fantastic strategy Gothic stopped in this rating one step short of the TOP 5. The second series of the legendary game turned out to be even more interesting than the first. Here you will find various campaigns and missions.

The main character has the opportunity to choose who to play for: humans, orcs or barbarians. The main character must develop his settlement as much as possible. However, the gamer can choose free gameplay and enjoy the usual movement around the area map.

No. 5. The Elder Scrolls

The first parts of this game did not foreshadow the world fame of The Elder Scrolls. However, the part that appeared in 2011 made the entire series popular. It retained the free mode.
Explore objects, look for tasks, and if necessary, use hints. And you can find a lot of interesting things in the area.

It is interesting that between the events of the penultimate and last part the period of time is about two hundred years.

No. 4. GTA: Vice City

It's hard to find a gamer who hasn't played GTA: Vice City. At one time, this part seemed to have the ideal graphics. However, more important was the gameplay. No less interesting than the various missions was the free mode. It has the opportunity to spend time in various ways: drive modern and new cars, earn money, rob passers-by and fight with them, use weapons.

In GTA: Vice City you can even travel outside the city. At the same time, you can travel in and around the Miami prototype not only by car, but also by boat or helicopter.

No. 3. Red Dead Redemption

While there are plenty of action films with superheroes and zombies, there are not so many westerns in the gaming world. A representative of this ancient genre is Red Dead Redemption. An open and fairly extensive world allows you to explore all its objects. The gamer can find tasks for himself.

The year this game appeared was 2010. And the actions described in it date back to 1911. As befits a Western, everything takes place in the Wild West in the USA.

No. 2. The Witcher

In addition to the possibility of free movement, Russian localization is available in this game. You can enable it using the settings. After switching on, the names and names of objects will be Russian. The same will apply to the voice acting of the gameplay.

The plot tells about a certain Geralt, who knows several magical secrets. The Witcher is actively hunting for monsters, and the outcome of the game may differ in accordance with the specific actions of the gamer.

No. 1. GTA V

Open World Grand Theft Auto was available back in 1997. GTA V, being the latest part to date, is no exception to this list. However, this part added fantastic physics. The combination of graphics and completely free movement was the reason that this game got its rightful first place.

Previously unavailable features have been added to GTA V. For example, you can slow down time when shooting or driving, making these skills more advanced.

It's hard to find a gamer who will say that games with small worlds are better than games with large ones. As a rule, the opposite happens: everyone wants more, and the more, the better. This is because the big world is usually associated with freedom, and it’s hard to imagine anything more valuable in video games than freedom. So the big world is an interesting thing. And right now I will tell you about ten not very old games, whose worlds were the largest. And I bet it won't turn out to be what you think.

10th place. Skyrim: The Special Edition(39 km?).

Let's come with trump cards! Probably, when it came to the open world, many immediately remembered Skyrim, but, as it turned out, the world of this game is not so big. The game is many years old, but, nevertheless, at one time its icy expanses caused delight. And even now, to put it mildly, they do not seem small. For example, the map of another Bethesda game, Fallout 4, has an area of only 15 square kilometers, despite the difference of many years. However, it is worth adding that these same 39 km of Skyrim did not include dungeons. It seems difficult to count them, but if we added them, then perhaps the project would rise higher. Well, you also need to take into account that in this case we are talking about a Special Edition with all its additions.

9th place. Far Cry 4 (45 km?).

Ubisoft's love for games with open worlds showed immediately. A first-person shooter, and with such a world, you know, it’s worth a lot. Usually, when we say “first-person shooter,” we mean something in the hallway. But that's not the case here. There is a big, seamless, multi-level world here. There are no special caves here, but even without them it turned out pretty good. We do not have exact data on the area of the world of Far Cry 3, but, as reported from the field, the world of the third part turned out to be noticeably smaller.

8th place. Mad Max (50 km?).

If you find fault, you can repeat after the developers who insisted that the world of Mad Max is endless. But we know that this is not so. As soon as you go beyond the map area, an inscription appears on the entire screen saying that this is a wild wasteland, and there is absolutely nothing for you to do here. And, indeed, there was nothing to do, because in this very wasteland there was nothing useful at all. As for the world, the situation here is as follows: the world does not open immediately. From the first minutes you can’t get behind the wheel and drive it diagonally. The maps open in small areas, and therefore do not make a special impression, and do not amaze with their scale. However, the world, due to the “automobile” nature of the game, is still large.

7th place. The Witcher 3 (52 km?).

The story with the area of the game world of the third Witcher is as follows. At the pre-release stage, the developers announced 139 square kilometers. We were still counting then, and were surprised that, supposedly, this was three times more than Skyrim. But there is one nuance: the developers calculated the area of the entire map, with seas, mountains that you can’t climb, and all the buildings that you can’t go into. But, in general, the area of the playable map is a little more than fifty square kilometers, and this is with the addition of Blood and Wine. Without it, the result is something around forty. So, as we see, the best, in my personal opinion, open world, turned out to be not at all as big as it seemed, because we still have six whole games ahead of us.

6th place. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (74 km?)

I would love to tell you about the area of Dragon Age: Inquisition, but, unfortunately, I don’t have the information. So get what I own. The world of the new Zelda is really big. There is room to turn around here, but, as in the Inquisition, density of content had to be sacrificed for space. The map, needless to say, is empty and monotonous. You run through forests and steppes, and only animals jumping up on the way diversify the transitions between interesting, truly game-like locations. But the world is really big, and if it weren’t for the mini-map, you could easily get lost in it, endlessly winding through the hills and ravines.

5th place. Grand Theft Auto V (80 km?).

I wanted to install Watch Dogs 2, but in the genre of open-world urban action games, the latest GTA has no competitors, and there won’t be until Cyberpunk 2077 comes out. So, what do we have? And we have a huge map, the world of which is twice as large as the world of Skyrim and 5 times larger than the world of Fallout 4. So it turns out that in Skyrim there are huge spaces and cities, in Fallout, it’s like, like, a Wasteland, but here there is only one city with the surrounding area, and such a scale. But, you need to take into account the following: this area was calculated taking into account the territory over which you can fly by plane. With the same success, the sea world of the third Witcher could be calculated, thanks to which the game about the adventures of Geralt of Rivia would be noticeably higher.

4th place. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (100 km?).

Suddenly? Quite. And I will say more: in general, the world of the game is about 250 square kilometers, but, as you probably already understood, we are talking about the expanses of the sea, through which it is proposed to sail on ships. If we discard them, then there are about a hundred kilometers of land left on which to run. It’s not for nothing that many fans of this pseudo-historical series consider Black Flag to be the best part. The best, not the best, but the world in it is very large, and perhaps even larger than the world of Assassin's Creed: Unity. However, the record, it seems, will not stand for long, because Ubisoft will soon release new part about Egypt. And, where Egypt is, there is a desert, and where there is a desert, there is a minimum of content, which means you can create a huge world. Well, if we remember that there will also be a Mediterranean Sea, along which, supposedly, it will be possible to sail to Greece, then I won’t dare to imagine the scale of the new Assassin’s Creed.

3rd place. Xenoblade Chronicles X (340 km?).

You probably didn't expect to see this game here. Another action game for Nintendo consoles with huge world. But here you also need to understand: the world, although big, is empty. In addition, the method of movement in it seems to be the most high-tech in our entire hit parade. It’s one thing to run on foot, ride horses, or even drive cars, and quite another to travel on futuristic, hovercraft. In general, the world is big, but - there is an opinion - it is unlikely that fans will distinguish their geographical location from screenshots; think about it, someone would conduct such an experiment. There are no memorable places on the map, but 340 square kilometers is no joke either.

2nd place. Just Cause 3 (370 km?).

And another game that you were unlikely to expect, and if you did, it was clearly not in this place. So what do we get? It turns out that we have a total of 1000 square kilometers of the map as a whole, but strictly game, with land, and without the useless ocean, almost three times less. However, it is very significant. For example, if the entire world of Fallout 4 is crossed diagonally on foot in 40 minutes, then the world of Just Because 3 is crossed in 8 hours. A great result that will not be easy to overcome. True, as practice shows, the size of the world is not always the key to a high quality game, and this particular action game did not perform as optimists expected: there is too much monotony, but the world is really huge.

1 place. Ghost Recon Wildlands – (400 km?).

Well, the winner of our hit parade, in which games were measured by size, is the latest Ubisoft game, which was initially positioned as an open-world game. The world here is really huge. And all thanks to Bolivia - a country where there are many, many wild drug dealers and deserts. And where there is a desert, there is no need to be shy in scale. It is noteworthy that the area of real Bolivia is slightly more than a million square kilometers. Those. Almost half of the entire state fit in here. This is a serious result, especially since there is almost no water here. Everywhere there is one continuous land on which you can run. What can we say if crossing the entire map by plane takes about 8 minutes. Whether there were guys who covered this map on foot is unknown to science.

This is how we got the TOP chick. Here, of course, you need to take into account that many games whose worlds could take their rightful place are not included here. And all because the data on their area is unknown to anyone. Well, there are also games with a procedurally generated world, such as No Man’s Sky, but this is a slightly different story, so we won’t include them here. And you, if you know about games whose worlds are larger, and even know their area, then, of course, write about it in the comments. Well, that's all. Play only good games, and let no one leave beaten.

We live in a golden age where there are no shortage of great open world games on the market. Here is a list of our favorites.

It's a great time for games with an open world and many virtual sandboxes, in which everything depends solely on the player's choice. Of course, they have their own stories, story missions quests and objectives, but players are free to complete them in the order in which they enter.

From fantasy worlds to entire gaming galaxies, from modern cities to post-apocalyptic wastelands, the best open world games give gamers absolute decision-making freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want, while enjoying a compelling story along the way. your own adventure. So, Here are the most outstanding open world games for PC.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was a significant milestone for the franchise, changing much of what the Assassin's Creed series was known for. Odyssey has transformed itself into a full-fledged RPG. At the same time, it follows the tradition of having an incredibly large open world filled with small details, colorful landscapes and a variety of quests.

“They say that size doesn’t matter, but The Odyssey benefits from the sheer scale of Ancient Greece, especially since each location is different from the next,” our review says.

It's a vast world to explore and explore, and every part of it has its own unique atmosphere, from the arid wastelands of Crete to the lush green plains of Arcadia. This is not only the largest, but also the most beautiful game from Ubisoft."

Subnautica's vast underwater world and diverse underwater life make up the most stunningly large open world in the video game industry. Games literally are rarely this flawless.

I admire the way the light rendering and rendering make each biome a distinct underwater creation, so alien and yet so familiar. I like to swim after different creatures, even aggressive ones. At such moments, I happily explore the underwater cave system, forgetting to leave glowing signs that would help me get back.

Honestly speaking, the imitation of life here is really entry level. However, Subnautica receives rave reviews for its incredible creation of the illusion of an ecosystem. Big fish eat small fish, and their respective characteristics and physical features matter. And it doesn’t matter that most of them look pretty good against the backdrop of the deep sea abyss. And between these studies, at the call of natural curiosity, you can follow the plot. Say no more so as not to spoil the sci-fi mystery.

The game is definitely worth the money: the developers managed to transfer real locations to virtual world with such precision and attention to detail, and such wonderful atmosphere that they turned out to be even more attractive than their real prototypes.

Los Santos looks much larger than GTA 4's Liberty City, and even than the entire state of San Andreas we first saw in 2004 - as a result, Rockstar have given us a game made to such a high standard that they have clearly outdone themselves myself.

In addition to the excellent storyline and the real madness happening in the vastness of GTA Online, everyone will enjoy about 100 hours of chases and shootouts on land, on water and in the air, which will appeal to all connoisseurs of the genre.

Assassin's Creed: Origins

The world of Origins is by far the best in the entire game series and one of the best open ones that has ever existed. Our reviewer Chris liked the way Ubisoft designed the Ancient Egypt locations and made them feel alive despite the huge area.

Cities and towns are teeming with locals, farmers, workers and soldiers. There is a huge amount of wild life (which can eventually be tamed): from the evil crocodiles and hippos that live in the waters of the Nile, to the lions and hymens that wander along the sand dunes of the mountains and flamingos and egrets that fly into the sky when you rush on your horse near them.

Gold can be found in the Thar Desert. After playing for 35 hours trying to complete the main quest, Chris was still unable to visit every location on the map. This means that there are some quests, characters, and societies left in the game that you can still look at. Assassin's Creed: Origins proves that Ubisoft can reinvigorate the tired franchise through sheer skill.

At the same time, the company does not have to add dubious and low-quality content. Nevertheless, it is wonderful to be in the areas of Ancient Egypt. Now you can explore every centimeter of it without killing people, thanks to this educational mod.

Quite buggy, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an open-world RPG whose ambitions largely outstrip its problems. Here is not only part of the bohemian Middle Ages, but also a complex of imitation of (conditionally historical) life and death.

If you are caught stealing, you will have to spend some time behind bars. If you draw your sword during a fist fight, your opponent will likely back down or even apologize. Nobles will be more willing to communicate with you after you take a shower. If your reputation in the city is high enough, local residents, seeing you on the street, will exclaim your name and praise you.

He continues and barely touches on everything else. The detail in the life simulation here is pretty absurd, but Kingdom Come manages to tie it all together to a pretty good standard. From start to finish, you play as a naive, vulnerable and unremarkable young man. The shadows of small dangers hang over the lovable fool Henry, filling the world with mysteries and dangers that we are looking for in a huge open world.

Forza Horizon 3 is a racing simulator, but the game is not limited to just racing. Players are presented with a huge and beautiful sandbox, full of city streets, picturesque beaches, green forests and giant deserts, recreating a large part of Australia.

Here we always have something to do: races, special tasks, special tricks, collecting bonuses, not to mention a decent fleet of vehicles, where each car is worked out to the smallest detail. Forza Horizon 3 is a series staple because of its scope, variety, and enjoyment.

In the game Stalker, the main enemy of the gamer can be called the open world. Gamma radiation, many anomalies and radioactive storms can shorten the life of newcomers to a few moments. In every building there is a high probability of stumbling upon looters or terrible mutated creatures. Ammo and armor are a rarity in this world, and a feeling of alienation reigns here in almost every location.

But many experienced stalkers will confirm that the Zone inexplicably attracts them. Explore abandoned Ukrainian factories and try to come to terms with the lifeless silence. After some time, you will understand that the destroyed world of Stalker is beautiful in its own way.

A remarkable technical achievement, The Witcher 3 is a true milestone in the history of open world gaming, taking full advantage of the capabilities of modern gaming systems to create a compelling experience. environment, where every little detail is worked out and looks natural. The gloomy swamps of Velen are just an aperitif, after which the main course awaits you in the form of the huge Novigrad and the northern region of Skellige - one of the most beautiful locations in the entire history of gaming.

You can spend hundreds of hours here, moving between islands, completing various quests, encountering witches, slaying monsters and playing Gwent with the rowdy locals. Yes, the cities in The Witcher 3 are bustling with life, unlike other free world games which can seem rather dull in comparison.

Here you can simply direct the hero in any direction at any time and still find something - and this speaks of the quality of detail in the open world.

Not every game has an open world as expansive as Elite: Dangerous. You will take the helm of a spaceship and fly throughout the Milky Way galaxy, along the way fighting pirates (or becoming one of them), blowing up asteroids, transporting and selling goods, or simply discovering unexplored stars of the planet, as well as entire systems.

Whether you're playing solo or online, you'll find adventure among the 400 billion solar systems featured in Elite. Of course, it won't happen without aliens.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

One of the most exciting Assassin's Creed entries since the second game, Black Flag masterfully combines the familiar elements of parkour and sailing through a lush Caribbean archipelago. Small islands, whales, various forts and colonial fortifications - all this awaits you in the vast ocean, and on the largest islands events standard for the Assassin’s Creed series will unfold. Against the backdrop of the frankly weak third part, Black Flag looked like a breath of fresh sea air.

The cities have become smaller, and the plot is more pointless, but not every game allows you to destroy the port with your own hands. Imagine your ship's guns tearing apart seemingly solid walls as you run across the battlefield, hunting down enemy commanders with pistols at the ready. It is in moments like these that you realize how good the local open world is. In addition, storms are perfectly recreated here.

Walking through the world of Morrowind is very similar to walking through the streets of the Victorian era - it is clear that technology was not used to recreate the image, but everything looks surprisingly realistic. A kind of look at the world, frozen in time, which is both frightening and attractive. Morrowind became a real bridge between the spectacular but soulless 3D blockbusters of today and the enchanting role-playing games of the last century.

Thanks to well-known mods like OpenMW and Skywind, it's possible that Morrowind's popularity will continue to grow in the coming years. The game world continues to surprise and delight just as it did 15 years ago.

The full potential of the open world in Metal Gear Solid 5 is only revealed when the player stops using a helicopter for each mission and starts moving on foot through two huge locations (Afghanistan and the border between Angola and Zaire), acting in RPG style. The stealth action game from Kojima Productions encourages freedom of action, and the progression system generously rewards the player for making the most decisions.

It all starts modestly: with a weak pistol in the hand and futile attempts to hit the heads of enemies, but by the end of the game, gamers can already attract opponents with a mechanical arm, lift tanks with the help of balloons and call in an artillery strike on bears. Perhaps all the components of a great game are in place.

The stylish and pixelated 2D universe presented in Starbound is richer than it seems. You will find quests, battles with regular enemies and bosses, exploration, and interplanetary travel. Carrying out excavations on the next planet, studying new ones solar systems or building your own town with friendly NPCs, you will understand that the world (or rather, worlds) of Starbound is so pleasant that you want to spend as much time as possible in it.

It's certainly not the deepest game on the list, but it's engaging because of its wildness and level of fun. It's not always possible to see such a huge open world, which is a real playground for experiments, and the famous grappling hook and endless parachutes help you easily move around all corners of this tropical paradise.

I'm sure you'll barely touch the ground, quickly moving through the air from one point to another, causing chaos and destruction along the way. In Just Cause 3 we saw a more impressive scale, but in this game the open world is much more interesting.

There's something appealing about a ruined world, and Mad Max's wasteland is a stunning sight to behold. From industrial locations to lifeless deserts and lakes filled with toxic waste, the local world is fraught with danger, but the whole world is built on this. In addition, you can explore the local expanses in a homemade car, whose body is covered with spikes, which will be very useful when colliding with all the madmen that inhabit the local expanses.

The gameplay in Mad Max may seem monotonous and quickly boring to some, especially when the game forces us to get out of the car and move on foot, but, nevertheless, the adventures of Mad Max are a real high-octane pleasure.

The entire Saints Row series is an inventive satire of the entire gaming industry, but don't rush to conclusions after seeing the slightly empty city from Saints Row 4. Superpowers like Hulk-style long-distance jumping, running at high speeds, as well as a set of unique weapons and With moves straight from wrestling, the game is the closest thing in spirit to Crackdown that can be found on PC, but there is also a ton of humor.

The game is favored by a cannon that allows you to inflate enemies until they explode, and a dubstep gun, the firing speed of which depends on the costume the character is wearing. These facts alone are enough to at least try the game.

Looks can be deceiving: Westerado is a stunning open world game that gives the player an incredible level of freedom. The plot here does not shine with originality - we are looking for a certain madman who killed our entire family, but the identity of the criminal changes with each new playthrough.

As you explore a dusty, Wild West-style world and search for the killer, you're free to do whatever you want—you can accuse anyone you meet of the aforementioned crime at any time. If you wish, you can even shoot any NPC right during the dialogue. Be a hero, a bandit or anything else. The choice is entirely yours.

A harsh post-apocalyptic wasteland is supposed to be boring by definition, but Bethesda has spent decades honing its own formula to make Fallout 4 as rich a place as possible. Yes, the game ended up not being as revolutionary as its predecessors, but participating in military operations in Boston, densely populated by people and mutants, is still interesting. On the outskirts of Diamond City, endless battles rage, while in the wasteland, survivors fight brutal mutants who are trying to devour everything that moves.

With the exception of Minecraft, this is the only game where gamers can change the world. Villages are liberated to use the property of local residents to build cities with amenities such as running water and turrets designed to ward off intruders. And since the game was based on an advanced version of the Creation engine, which underlay Skyrim and Oblivion, it became a real paradise for modders.

And, of course, it only gets better with mods. Follow the link to find a selection.

Thanks to PlayStation Now and backwards compatibility Xbox One this masterpiece from Bethesda managed to make it onto our list. Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has stood the test of time. It's filled with enough quests and memorable characters (yes, I'm talking about you, Glarthir) that you'll immediately want to shut yourself out from the rest of the world and spend hours trying to achieve the highest rank in the Thieves Guild or return giant potatoes to their rightful owner.

Once you get out of prison in the prologue, you can do whatever your heart desires, even postponing the mission to save the world indefinitely. That would be it real life it could have been the same.

This is the best game in existence, if, of course, you get the hang of it. Like Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress generates entire planets in a matter of seconds. And everything is not limited to just creating realistic rivers and continents. The local system generates real civilizations with their own stories, wars, heroes and even religious beliefs. Sometimes civilizations do not even survive the world generation process.

In these cases, we stumble upon the ruins of their buildings, restoring them for our fortress, or find hidden treasures in the mode role playing game. Many will be put off by the ASCII interface, and before starting the game it is worth watching a couple of training videos, but it is worth recognizing that at the moment this is one of the most advanced open worlds, which, moreover, is regularly updated with fresh updates and patches.

The open world is usually equated with complete freedom and carefree fun, but Sunless Sea smashes this concept to smithereens. An intriguing plot and complex (and sometimes cruel) gameplay build your character so much that you involuntarily step into the role of the character. The ominous atmosphere will not appeal to everyone - and certainly not to those who do not like to read, but the game maintains the set pace from the very first seconds, and the recently released DLC is another reason to return to adventures full of dark humor in the sea.

Starting with Far Cry 2, the series each time offered the player shootouts in new exotic locations - from Africa and tropical islands to the Himalayas. Far Cry 2's setting, unique approach to action sequences, and partnership system quickly made the game a source of critical admiration. It still looks decent today, but since then Far Cry has had excellent stealth and added a cooperative mode, and the mesmerizing snowy peaks from Far Cry 4 simply cannot be ignored.

With each new part the game became more and more intense, so in parts 3 and 4, great attention was paid to capturing and holding various checkpoints. You can approach this task in an open world in different ways - combining an extensive arsenal and stealth kills in close combat. Like its predecessors, Far Cry 4 boasts excellent fire physics. It is especially noticeable in moments when everything is not going completely according to plan.

What if we imagined the open world not as a hostile environment where you need to focus on survival, but as a foundation for building your own world? Many games have tried to replicate the success of Minecraft over the years. Some of them, like Terraria and Starbound, have notably succeeded, but the original, which has become a symbol of an entire generation, continues to grow before our eyes with each new patch.

It's quite simple for the survival genre, but great as an interactive construction set - people build worlds of incredible detail in it. Minecraft is not just a great open world game, but a true cultural phenomenon.

This game may not have the most beautiful of worlds, but the complete freedom of action that is given to the player in Mount & Blade: Warband more than compensates for any shortcomings. You will travel through gigantic locations with medieval villages, cities and castles, where you can gather your own army to fight your enemies (you can, of course, do this alone, but it’s not as fun).

The combat system here is one of the best on PC, and the list of advantages of the game includes the ability to choose your own style of play. Complete quests, join any faction and become its leader... or just explore the world to your heart's content. And if you pay attention to the many mods, you can transfer your adventures to the worlds of “Star Wars”, “” and other iconic universes.

The world of Skyrim doesn't revolve around you. Somewhere in the wilderness, a necromancer is trying to revive a skeleton. At the same time, during the day you meet a gang of bandits trying to defeat a giant (rest in peace to them) or wander into a nearby village, which is attacked by a dragon at the very moment when you, well-fed and satisfied, leave the tavern. Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim consists of many such stories that surround you everywhere: even if you avoid any major settlements, you will still complete at least 30% of the quests along the way.

The game world is filled with a variety of interesting activities: there are so many amazing things to see, hack so many unusual creatures to pieces, steal so many goods from so many merchants and explore so many creepy Dwemer ruins... oh yes, and fight dragons. Having played Skyrim even for 100 hours (this is a beginner level), you will not complete all the quests and not kill all the bosses. It is difficult to overestimate the influence of this game on the gaming industry around the world. To understand the bar he's set for the next Elder Scrolls 6, we encourage you to dive into the world of Skyrim right now.
