Decoupage of a glass jar with an aging effect.

Today we have prepared another interesting master class entitled “Wine Bottle in Decoupage and Aging Style.” This bottle can be used both for interior decoration and as a gift. to a loved one, a relative or even a colleague.

To make it you will need an empty bottle of the original shape.

Be sure to wipe the glass with acetone (it will degrease the surface, which will allow you to make high-quality decoupage).

For a themed bottle, choose a napkin with a suitable pattern. A 25*25 cm napkin with a picture of wine, cheese, bread and grapes will come in handy. 1/4 of the napkin will fit well into the circumference of the bottle.

Next, paint the degreased bottle with white acrylic paint in two layers (the paint should have good hiding power so that the glass is evenly painted over).

Now, unusual way gluing napkins. For the bottle decoupage technique, you can use not only special glue, but also the most simple means- glue stick. Apply a pencil to the round flat surface of the bottle on which decoupage will be done.

Wait until the glue begins to dry a little, and place a napkin on top, exactly in the center, smooth it with your hand. Immediately place the napkin evenly, because if it sticks, it would be impossible to tear it off.

Now tear off the fragment that has stuck from the whole napkin in a circle.

Now coat with acrylic varnish only the circle outlined by the bottle itself.

When the varnish is dry, use sandpaper to remove the excess part of the napkin (which is not stuck). Then, repeat gluing with reverse side bottles.

A wine bottle with decoupage turns out to be interesting. We begin to create aging effects.

First we make abrasions. Paint the entire surface of the bottle, where there is no decoupage, with burnt umber.

It is this color that will later appear in abrasions.

When the paint dries, arm yourself with a regular candle and rub the bottle with it, since the sides have a relief - most of the wax remains on the convex surfaces.

We paint over the brown paint with ivory acrylic. This color matches the tone of the napkin fragment.

After the light paint has dried, arm yourself with a dishwashing sponge and rub the hard side over the bottle. In those places where there was wax under the light paint on the bottle, the paint did not adhere firmly to the surface and it would come off easily.

Very gentle and natural abrasions appear on the bottle. This is the first stage of turning a bottle into a rarity and aging it.

To fix scuffs, you need to cover the entire bottle with a couple of layers of acrylic varnish.

Now we start aging the decoupage itself, since the picture is too bright and does not match the worn side of the bottle. We will make cracks using Solo Goya two-component craquelure.

First we apply the first step of the craquelure pair - grundlak. We wait for it to dry almost completely, depending on the air temperature in the apartment (this may take 1-1.5 hours).

Then mix a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent with 5 milliliters of the second step of Solo Goya craquelure and wait until it dries.

When this layer dries, small cracks appear on the surface of the drawing. We make cracks sequentially on both sides of the bottle.

To make cracks look natural, you need to “show” them. Take light gold oil paint and use a cotton swab to rub the paint into the cracks.

Immediately wipe off excess paint with a swab; the paint will remain only in the cracks and the design will look like an old fresco.

Using the same swab, wipe along the sides of the bottle so that a little of the gold paint remains on them in a very thin layer. Leave the bottle overnight to allow the oil paint to dry.

While the paint is drying, work on the lid. Lubricate it with “Dragon” glue and wrap it with a hemp rope.

After the oil paint has dried, carefully wash off the second step of the craquelure under running warm water. The golden cracks have already dried and have not washed away; they created the effect of an old surface.

To finish the work, decoupage and aging the wine bottle, spray it with matte aerosol varnish. It will not shine on the surface and will emphasize the dullness of the old bottle.

And so, if you liked this method make a gift dear person, then you are welcome to take a look at the next master class on making

A lot has been written about decoupage, but I would still like to dwell on one more in an interesting way decorating this way. Using decoupage of bottles with fabric, you can make great gift to your friends for any celebration.

Or you can make it for yourself, your beloved: let the beauty enliven the kitchen shelves and be in plain sight for everyone. You will definitely be asked: who gave it, where did it come from or how did you do it? I would like to note that fabric can be used to decoupage not only bottles, but also dishes, boxes, furniture, etc. The best decoupage websites will help beginners master this creativity.

Champagne bottle

The guinea pig for today will be a bottle of champagne. First you need to prepare: cotton fabric, acrylic primer, acrylic paints and acrylic varnish, PVA glue, putty, golden acrylic paint, sponges, as well as the actual design on a napkin or other paper that you want to see on your future work.

First of all, you need to remove the labels from the bottle, rinse the surface of glue, wipe dry, and then degrease. Anyone who has already done decoupage knows how to do it. And whoever is doing this for the first time should know that you can degrease the surface of the bottle using alcohol or glass cleaner. Do this conscientiously, because the application of paint will depend on this. It may apply unevenly.

From primer to varnish

Next, coat the bottle with acrylic primer using either a sponge or a brush. Leave it to dry for ten hours. If you need the finished product quickly, then use a regular hairdryer to dry the applied primer. So it will be ready for further work within 1.0-1.5 hours. During the drying process, select the location where the image will be placed. Carefully cut out the picture. Remove all unnecessary layers from the napkin; if it is cardboard, then also remove the entire bottom layer, leaving only the image.

Before gluing, wet the image with water and then glue it with acrylic varnish. Cover the entire surface of the bottle up to the golden mark with paint, that is, create a background. Instead of a foam sponge, you can use a sponge designed for washing dishes. Leave the bottle to dry, then cover it with matte acrylic varnish.

Selection of drapery

When choosing material for drapery, they usually stop at natural fabrics. Cotton works great (towel, leftover fabric, handkerchief, T-shirt). Take a piece of fabric that would look harmonious on the bottle. Consider how and where folds, folds, twists, etc. will be placed.

Next, take a container, pour PVA glue into it, dilute it with a little water, mix putty and paint into it. Stir. Then place a cloth in this mixture and moisten the entire surface with it. Remove, squeeze and carefully wrap the bottle as intended. Leave the drawing open. When this procedure is completed, leave the bottle until completely dry, it is better to wait a day or act according to the circumstances.

Finishing touches

After this, cover the entire surface with acrylic paint, painting over all the folds and gaps, which will give a rich color.

Let dry. Then coat with acrylic varnish. Leave to dry. Take gold paint and apply it to the folds and bottom of the bottle itself. Coat the top with varnish again and set aside until completely dry. That's all. This is the decoupage of the bottle. Good luck!

How to age objects: all aging techniques

Hot trend now: makeover various items furniture, their decorative finishing and aging.

Methods of influencing the surface are chosen in accordance with the interior, preferences, or simply according to the mood. In this article we tried to describe the basic techniques, materials, sequence of actions and their results.

0:647 0:657

1:1162

Let's consider the options:

Dry brush
. Patination
. Glaze
. Spray
. Crackle
. “Rubbed” technique (Shabby Chic)
. Etching (staining)
. Brushing
. Additional mechanical impact

Dry brush

Dry brushing is a technique borrowed by decorators from painters. And if in painting this method is used to create an image, then in practical decor it is an excellent way to age an object and add more years to it.

1:453 1:463

2:968 2:978

The essence of the technique: put a little paint on a flat synthetic brush, wipe off the excess, this is done on paper (palette, rag) until each hair of the brush produces a separate line.

2:1365 2:1375

3:1880

And now light movements, lightly touching the object, we “dirty” it, paying special attention to the protruding parts: ribs, convex pattern, etc.

3:279

This way the relief is emphasized and abrasions are imitated.

3:404

Applying patina or patination

Patina is a greenish-brown coating formed on objects made of copper and bronze as a result of oxidation under the influence of environment. In a broader sense, patina refers to signs of aging on any objects made from any materials.

3:959

Patination in decoration is an imitation of surface darkening, which natural form appears as discoloration after a long period of time and frequent hand contact. Patina can be dark, colored, metallic, white (liming).

3:1453

4:1958

The patination composition is applied to the edges, corners of the object, or vice versa, into the recesses of the relief parts. There are several types of patination.

4:261 4:271

1. Bituminous patina

4:311

Bituminous varnish is applied to the surface and the excess is immediately wiped off. The varnish remains only in the recesses, shading the surface. Secured with shellac varnish.

4:610 4:620

2. Acrylic-based patina

4:674 4:684

5:1189 5:1199

Acrylic paint, heavily diluted with water, is poured into the recesses of the relief, and the excess is wiped off with a clean cloth.

3. Chemical patina

5:1452 5:1462

6:1967

A special oxidizer is applied to the paint with fine metal particles, which causes the metal surface to age (oxidize) within a few minutes.

6:338 6:348

4. Shellac varnish

6:384 6:394 6:398 6:408

Shellac varnish gives surfaces a warm light yellow or red-orange hue. Widely used in woodworking to emphasize the texture of wood, used as a protective and covering agent.

6:794 6:804

5. Waxy patina

6:844 6:854

7:1359 7:1369

Rub over the surface and tint selected areas. It takes a long time to dry. Gives the surface a soft silky sheen.

7:1624

Glaze

7:35 8:540

Glazing is a painting technique in which the lower layer of the paint layer shines through the upper translucent one. The technique is widely used not only in painting, but also in interior design, including the painting of objects. The technique allows you to obtain deep iridescent colors due to the translucency of the glaze layers.

8:1203

9:1710

Various paints and coloring compositions are suitable for glazing: watercolors, oil, acrylic paints, strong brewed tea. It is convenient to use a solution of acrylic paints. A wide palette allows you to get the desired color.
The paints are easily mixed with each other, diluted with water or acrylic paint thinner to the desired consistency, dry quickly after application, are resistant to moisture and mechanical stress and can be used on any surface.

9:872 9:882

10:1400 10:1410

Technological process: Using a synthetic brush or sponge, apply the solution to the prepared surface, wait for it to dry and evaluate the result. Glazing does not allow you to completely paint over the structure of the base or the previously applied image; it only sets the tone. To enhance the effect, you can apply a second layer of glaze paint, and then the color intensity will increase.
If you apply several translucent layers of paint different color, as a result we get different shades that shine through each other.

10:2405

10:9

Spray

10:39

11:544 11:554

Spray- droplets-splashes on the surface of the decorated product, which create the image of a thing that has passed through time, reflect the history of its use.

11:849

An artistically stained thing like this in a simple way receives a unique visual charm and is pleasant to use tactile perception relief. This is all very important, since the items chosen for decoration are decorated for a beloved home and for people dear to the heart.

11:1355 11:1365

12:1870

The process itself is very entertaining. Before you begin, you need to prepare workplace. For example, cover the surface with newspaper or cloth.
The tools you will need are a toothbrush or a hard brush. Materials: paints and water in a glass.

12:466 12:476

Progress:

12:504

Wet the brush with water and put a small amount of paint on it. We try using a fingernail or a toothpick to release drops onto the still test surface of the sample, simply running the tool along the bristles.
If you have a small comb, you can experiment with it, running a brush with paint over the teeth.

12:1063 12:1073

13:1578

With a wide brush, you can simply shake off the drops or tap the brush on your hand, then small colored droplets break off the brush and fly down. Having decided on the application process, it’s time to cast some magic.
Spraying is the last operation before varnishing. Drops applied on top of the varnish will differ from the general glossiness of the surface of the object, this effect will introduce an additional effect of a gap in time.

13:771

Crackle

Crackle is a technique of artificial aging, creating cracks in a paint or varnish layer.

13:978

1. Craquelures are divided into one-step (single-phase) and two-step (two-phase)

13:1118 13:1128

14:1633

14:9

One-step craquelure looks like a cracked layer of paint, through the cracks of which the lower layer of paint or the base of the product is visible. The base can be anything: glass, metal, plastic, wood and similar materials.
Two-step craquelure looks like a network of fine cracks (cracked varnish) on the surface of any image or coating.

14:646 14:656

2. Eggshell crackle

14:714 14:724

15:1229 15:1239

Gives a bright, high-relief cracking effect. A clean shell is glued onto PVA or acrylic varnish in pieces at some distance from each other. Sometimes the relief is further emphasized by patination or the “dry brush” technique.

15:1701

15:9

3. Faceted varnish

15:43 15:53

16:558 16:568

Colored self-crack varnish. Apply a thick layer to the surface and leave to dry. Forms large cracks.

16:837 16:847

4. Two-component microcraquelure

16:917 16:927

17:1432 17:1442

Gives the effect of thin cracks - cobwebs. Transparent, so it is often used over images. After drying, cracks are often emphasized by patination.

17:1760 17:9

5. Craquelure paint

17:49 17:59

18:564 18:574

Self-cracking paint with a one-step craquelure effect.

18:732 18:742

Delicate abrasions in the style of Shabby Chic or the Candle Rubbing Technique

The technique is simple and consistent. The corners, sides, joints of the primed planes of the object are covered with paint of a rich shade, the paint layer is rubbed with paraffin, then covered with light paint, most often 2 layers are required.

18:1321 18:1331

19:1836

Now the mechanics: sandpaper in places where paraffin was applied and the 1st layer of paint is removed upper layer. This is how abrasions, imitation of use, and the effect of aging appear.

19:373

This technique traditionally uses delicate pastel colors with “sweet” shades, as if faded by the sun or faded with time:

19:665 19:675

20:1180 20:1190

Light pink;

20:1233

Ivory;

20:1287

Creamy;

20:1317

Hyacinth;

20:1351

Lavender;

20:1383

White (but not snow-white, but as if slightly yellowed with age);

20:1518

Pistachio;

20:33

Linen.

20:59

You can complement the “shabby chic” look with painting, motifs from decoupage cards or napkins, or add splashes. The final coat will be several layers of acrylic matte varnish.

20:397

Etching

20:431 20:435 20:445

Suitable for objects of any size made of wood . Rocks that are best suited to this method of treatment are: deciduous trees. In this way, you can give wood noble, rich shades without losing natural beauty texture of the material.

20:940 20:950

Etching is carried out with various compositions - mordants. . Some of them have complex names or a strong smell, but along with them there are many recipes available for making with your own hands, such as tea, coffee, compositions from leaves, bark; Potassium permanganate, blue, and vinegar are used. For those who feel like a bit of a chemist, tinting wooden surfaces is quite a suitable activity.

20:1728

21:504 21:514

The process can happen in two ways:

21:607

1. Hand dyeing using a fiber-free cloth swab or a synthetic brush.

21:796

2. Dyeing by soaking in an etching composition.

21:901 21:911

Most often the process takes place with elevated temperatures. After selecting and purchasing (mixing) the desired composition, the wood is cleaned of excess and sanded with sandpaper. Then there’s the etching-staining process itself. As a rule, the mordant recipe includes the time of exposure to the composition and the expected result. Basically, control is done visually and, of course, this is where creativity comes in.

21:1660

Brushing

The most common method of mechanical aging of wood is brushing. Its name comes from the word Brush - “brush”.

21:305

The surface is treated with metal brushes, selecting the top soft fibers, leaving only the hard ones.

21:512 21:522

22:1027 22:1037

An ideal way to age if the furniture is made from:

22:1130 22:1151

larches

22:1184 22:1203 22:1224 22:1234

This method will not work if the furniture is made of:

22:1329 22:1348 22:1369 22:1390 22:1409 22:1430

Brushing wood with firing or smoking

22:1541

22:3 22:13

It is performed using either an open fire, or, which is much more convenient, using a blowtorch or gas torch. By directing the flame onto the surface of the wood, you can achieve different shades of wood - from light golden to black. The color depends on the initial color of the wood and the number of fire passes. Then brushing is performed - treating the surface of the wood with a stiff wire brush. In this case, the softer, burnt parts of the wood are cleaned out, and the harder ones (annual rings) remain in place.

22:994

Another way is firing in hot sand.
Fine, clean sand is poured into a metal container and heated to a temperature not exceeding 200 degrees C. Place the products prepared for firing into the hot sand and keep there until they darken. If the tone of individual parts of the product should lighten gradually, then these parts are immersed vertically in sand. The lower layers of sand heat up more than the upper ones, so the lower part of the piece will be darker than the upper. Thus, the result is a tone that goes from light yellow to dark brown.
The surface treated with brushes and fire can be tinted using the glaze or dry brush method, images can be added using the decoupage technique, or color can be added by spraying.

22:2312

Additional mechanical impact

23:586

Sometimes time comes in the form of a wood-boring beetle. To imitate such damage left by an insect, craftsmen use an awl, a drill, and even a laser. In the same way, minor damage is caused - chips or abrasions similar to those that surfaces receive over decades.

23:1141

Another way to cause noble damage - put nuts and bolts in a cloth and beat the object with this bag. And then artistically refine it to the desired result.

23:1488 23:1498

Imitation of past decades, aging techniques and techniques combined with chemical and mechanical processing give excellent decorative results.

23:285 23:295

24:800 24:810

For practical decoration, acrylic-based compositions deservedly occupy a large part in the arsenal of materials.. They are convenient to use: almost odorless, diluted with water, and easily washed off from tools. They have a variety of effects (imitation of metals, oil paints, matte tempera) and different textures. The color scheme can inspire a remodel, even if it was not started. They are durable, resistant to water and impact sunlight.

Long gone are the days when everyone in the country had the same dishes and furniture. Now no one will throw it away, but will try to give things a second life. We know that in addition to decor, there is also decoupage.

Decoupage is a type of decorative and applied art. The word "decoupage" means "to cut" in French. Working with this technique involves cutting out images from different materials: paper, napkins, leather, fabric, and gluing them onto surfaces for decoration.

Now this interesting technique has received a rebirth; it is used all over the world. Decoupage is used in working with furniture, boxes, kitchen utensils, Christmas tree decorations, household items, bags, watches, and so on. For decoupage, pictures printed on a copier or printer are used. In our master class we invite you to decoupage a stool while simultaneously aging it.

A very current topic is the aging of things that you will decorate. Here are the main techniques by which aging is carried out:

Let's try to understand the techniques of aging in decoupage, starting from simple to complex. The most common and simple technique is “rubbing” with a candle. The most difficult one is craquelure or crackle. We chose the master class “Aging with abrasions” for our work. The master class is simple, even a beginner can handle it.

Wornness and “scuffing” are achieved by multi-layer painting: corners, sides, joints of the product are covered with rich, but not too rich paint. dark color, then rubbed with paraffin, then paint light color. Next, use sandpaper to remove the top layer. This is how the aging effect appears.

Another simple technique. Great way age the product, create the appearance of antiquity and wear. The work consists of applying paint to a flat synthetic brush. Excess paint is removed with paper and applied with light strokes to the pattern, edges, and protruding parts of the object. This is how we achieve the aging effect.

Brushing wooden products in decoupage is usually combined with staining. The brushing technique is the removal of soft fibers from the top layer of wooden surfaces with a brush. There is no need to buy expensive ones for staining and brushing. special means, you can use strong brewed tea or coffee. Stain is also used. In places where there are abrasions, part of the wood is cleaned off with a hard metal brush or sandpaper, leaving light areas of the object.

Patination is traces of aging, imitation of darkening of the surface, as if this object had darkened due to frequent contact with hands. Patina is a green and brown coating that results from the oxidation of metal under the influence of moisture and air. Typically, in decoupage, patina is applied more to metal objects. Patina can be golden, colored, white, dark.

In addition to these techniques, spraying (splashes) is also used to create an aging effect on products. For spraying, usually an old toothbrush. The technique consists of dipping a brush into the paint and using your finger to make a “pull” motion. Splashes fly onto the product. This technique is often combined with abrasions. In this work you need to be careful, you cannot put a lot of paint on the brush, otherwise you will get blots.

Artificial aging by abrasions is the simplest process and does not require special skills. The technique consists of coating with paint dark shade places where there should be abrasions. Then we rub these places with a piece of candle (paraffin) or soap. For example, on a white chair, the scuffs will be blue or Brown. Rub the desired areas with wax. We cover these contours with white paint, dry them, then rub sandpaper over these areas. This style is also called “shabby chic” and is very popular. Our detailed master class will help you understand this technique.

Well, the most difficult process is craquelure or crackle. Craquelure is the creation of cracks in a paint or varnish layer. This is one of the expensive methods of aging, since this technology requires high-quality craquelure products. Aging products are divided into 2 types: one-component and two-component.

  • The first product is a transparent gel. This one-component product helps produce colored cracks. First, let's determine what color the background of the product will be and the color of the cracks. Then we cover the entire surface with paint of the color that we have determined for the cracks. After the paint has dried, apply craquelure gel on top. At the end, we cover the surface with paint of the color that you have defined as the background. After a while you will see beautiful cracks forming. If you need large cracks, apply a thick layer of background paint; if small cracks, on the contrary, you need a thin layer of paint.
  • The second product is called two-component, it helps to create cracks, like in old paintings. The effect of this product is amazing. These cracks are colorless and are only visible from a certain angle. At the beginning of work, the product is coated with a patina varnish and dries. For large cracks, the varnish is under-dried; for small cracks, it is over-dried. Then the surface is covered with craquelure varnish. After the craquelure varnish dries, cracks form. Next, using a tampon painted with dry pastel, the paint is rubbed into the cracks. Instead of pastels, you can use oil paint, eye shadow, and so on.

Aging with abrasions (master class)

For our master class we took the most simple technique aging, which does not require large material costs. This technique usually uses light pastel colors, as if “faded” by the sun or lost bright color from time.

To work you will need:

  1. White acrylic paint.
  2. Stool.
  3. Sandpaper.
  4. Decoupage varnish (the cheapest, water-based).
  5. Sponge.
  6. Pictures for decoupage.
  7. Candle.

We degrease the stool. You can degrease wood with gasoline, acetone, and alcohol. Rub the candle over all the protrusions and corners.

We process all corners and protrusions with sandpaper; in some places you can scrape them with a knife.

We print the pictures on a printer, on regular office paper. Before sticking to the product, lightly wet the picture and remove excess moisture with paper towels. The picture must be a mirror image.

Is there a way to turn an ordinary bottle into a decorative vase and decorate, for example, a kitchen window sill with it? Undoubtedly. And this view will help with this decorative creativity like decoupage. Of course, without basic knowledge it is difficult to decoupage bottles yourself; the master class helps a lot in this case. Although the technique itself is quite simple and does not require special skills or talents. It is enough to be able to work with paper, scissors and glue and find a tool for this free time. The scope of imagination has no limits.

Decoupage - what is it?

French words always sound beautiful and mysterious, although they sometimes mean the most ordinary things. So is the case with decoupage, which translates as “cutting.” In essence, this is an applique that is glued to a variety of surfaces.

Anything can serve as a material for decoupage, as long as it embodies the creative intent of the master. Most often, pictures cut out of paper are used. After all, it easily takes any shape and can be mounted on glass, wood, stone and any other surface that needs to be decorated.

For example, using the decoupage technique, you can turn an old porcelain teapot into a magnificent flower pot and complement your kitchen interior with it. An old sideboard, prepared for exile to the dacha, can easily compete with its antique counterparts if its doors are covered with a floral ornament in the style of the 18th century, artificially aged using a special craquelure varnish, giving the product an antique look. But the most popular is napkin decoupage, when an image you like is cut out of ordinary paper napkins and fixed on glass or stone with a layer of varnish.

Materials for decorating a bottle using decoupage technique

In general, the decoupage technique is for beginners and for more experienced craftsmen at work it is no different. Before you start, it’s better to stock up on patience and the necessary tools and materials for creativity.

She comes first Glass bottle- its surface should be as smooth as possible, without embossed decorations.

Next comes the drawing, selected either from paper napkins, or on decoupage cards, magazine clippings, pictures downloaded from the Internet and printed on a printer, etc. can be used.

To remove grease stains from glass, you will need any liquid capable of this.

Degreased glass needs to be primed. Any acrylic paint that matches the color of the main pattern is suitable for this.

Sponges for applying primer

Both special decoupage glue and school PVA are usually used as an adhesive.

Of course, you will also need brushes, preferably flat and made of synthetic bristles that do not lose hairs during use.

Fan brush for decoupage

In addition to paint for the primer, you should also have on hand just colored acrylic paints for decoration, and the same varnish for fixing the image on the glass.

To give the product an antique look, craquelure varnish will be indispensable, as it will also fix the design. After applying it, the item takes on the features of an antique.

And, of course, it will be impossible to do without a number of things - small scissors, masking tape, foam rubber, containers for paints and varnishes, sandpaper, rags for wiping.

Napkin bottle decoupage: step-by-step instructions

Preparing the glass surface

Any used bottle is covered on all sides with various labels and tags. Getting rid of them is not so easy, but it is quite possible. The bottle should remain in the soapy solution for some time, then all traces of paper and glue are removed from it using sandpaper. Only after this comes the turn of the solvent, which removes remaining grease from the surface of the glass.

Primer

In principle, you don’t have to prime the bottle, but choose a pattern so that the decoupage on the glass will look great on a transparent surface. But to enhance brightness and relief, it is better to cover the bottle with acrylic paint that matches the color of the selected pattern, and is at least one tone lighter. This is where you will need a foam roller or sponge. Dipping it into a wide jar of paint, carefully prime either the entire bottle or the part of it on which the design will be applied. To create a rich color, it is better to apply two or three layers of paint.

Carving the ornament

To work with thin elements of a napkin, it is better to use scissors from a manicure set or simply carefully separate the design from the rest of the paper. Then the image will turn out more natural.

Not only napkins are suitable for appliqué, but also magazine clippings on thicker paper. To get the effect of an image drawn directly on glass, a cutout of thicker paper needs to be coated with two or three layers of varnish, dried thoroughly, and then put this picture in water for about twenty minutes. If the layers of soaked paper are carefully removed, a transparent picture will remain on the varnished surface, which is glued to the base. Not every master class will teach you this type of bottle decoupage.

Gluing a picture to a bottle

The same dry cloth is applied to the prepared dry, grease-free surface of the bottle, and then a brush with pre-selected glue begins to “walk” along its surface. Very carefully and carefully, all air bubbles are squeezed out from under the napkin, and wrinkles that have inadvertently formed are smoothed out. If you are afraid of ruining your first masterpiece, then you can practice on a duplicate bottle.

If using decoupage cards, they should first be soaked in warm water and then lay out on a towel to dry.

This work is painstaking and very careful, you can’t even accidentally tear the card. It is carefully smeared with glue, first on the back side, and then, laid on the glass, carefully straightened and coated on the outside, expelling any remaining air and eliminating wrinkles. If it was planned to use more than one picture to decoupage the bottle, then all other images are glued in the same way.

Fixing the result with varnish

After gluing the image to the bottle, enough time must pass for the paper to dry completely. But in this form, the drawing is completely defenseless against air, light, water and sharp objects. To keep the surface undamaged, it is secured with a layer of varnish. And so that the bottle is not afraid of water either inside or outside and is used for its intended purpose, this varnish layer must be applied at least three times. But the result will be something that you won’t be ashamed to show to your friends.

If you capture on a camera what the decoupage of bottles looks like step by step, you can then show the photo to friends or other needlewomen.

Decoupage a bottle using rice paper

Among all types of decoupage, a special place is occupied by the use of rice paper in the process. To conduct a master class, it is advisable to determine what exactly is needed for this.

  • A glass bottle, if possible not very narrow, so that there is something to roam around and the decoupage turns out to be noticeable and bright.
  • Sheets of rice paper come in two colors - light green and white. It will be used as a base for decoupage.
  • Paper napkin with a pattern. Floral ornaments will add grace and tenderness to the decor.
  • Glue and a brush with artificial bristles so that hairs do not remain on the bottle.
  • Special marker white acrylic-based, leaving a line on any surface, and varnish to fix the design.
  • Scissors, glass degreasing solvent, napkins or towels for applying the product, decorative tape.

So, let's try to figure out why rice paper is needed for decoupage and how to use it correctly.

The most important process is degreasing the glass surface. After all, the quality of image fixation depends on this. We will do this using any cleanser and a regular napkin or cloth.

You need to prepare rice paper.

ATTENTION!!! It cannot be cut with scissors; it just needs to be carefully torn into small fragments. Scissors will create a smooth edge, and if rice paper tear, the fibers will give the surface the necessary naturalness.

It’s not for nothing that the Chinese came up with the idea of making paper from rice. It is more elastic than regular one and much easier to work with. This is the opinion of everyone who happened to hold this paper in their hands.

There are two different ways to apply rice paper to glass:

  1. Press fragments of dry paper onto the bottle and soak the paper thoroughly with glue. Then dry and treat with acrylic varnish.
  2. Another option is to also attach pieces of rice paper to the bottle and thoroughly moisten them with water. After drying almost completely (you can use a hairdryer for speed), then cover the pieces of paper with acrylic varnish.

This master class shows how, using the first method, you can make a very nice and original vase from an ordinary bottle. From green rice paper, select three long pieces with pointed ends, glue them with the narrower edge up around the entire bottle, carefully stretching and straightening all folds and wrinkles.

Carefully fill all free glass fragments with white rice paper, edge to edge. It is allowed to slightly overlap the edges, but no one will see these roughnesses in the finished product. But only if the fragments were torn off and not cut off.

Having thoroughly coated all the rice paper with glue, we set the bottle aside to dry completely, and at this time we carefully cut out the ornament from the napkin prepared for decoupage.

Once again, lubricate the entire bottle with glue, carefully press the design and carefully pass over it with a brush, carefully removing air bubbles and excess glue from under the napkin.

The bottle is sent to dry again, and then the entire surface is covered with acrylic varnish. For full protection images will need to be repeated 2-3 times.

After complete drying, the contours of the design are outlined with a white acrylic marker. This will give the entire product brightness and expressiveness.

Decorative tape also came in handy. The neck of the bottle, left without decoration, is very cleverly hidden under it.

Original master class

After all the work done, the glass milk bottle turned into a nice decorative vase, in which you wouldn’t be ashamed to put flowers. And on occasion, you can casually notice to your friends that all this beauty was made with your own hands and quickly enough.
