Main types of drill chucks

According to their design, they are divided into two main types:

  • toothed chuck, in which the tool shank is clamped using a special key;
  • a quick-release chuck for a drill (KZP), in which the clamping sleeve is actuated by manual rotation.

Clamping jaw chucks installed on modern drills allow you to securely fix tools whose shank diameter is in the range of 1–25 mm. Devices of this type are practically free of disadvantages, the most significant of which is their fairly high cost.

The most popular type of clamping device installed on modern drill models is the quick-release chuck (KLC). It only takes a few seconds to lock a tool into a BZP chuck, and there is no need to use a special key. The tool shank is clamped by manual rotation of the adjusting sleeve, the outer surface of which is knurled to facilitate this procedure. To regulate the mechanical force created on the tool shank, this type of clamp is equipped with a special locking device.

The most significant disadvantages of the BZP include the fact that in cases where the elements of its mechanism wear out, it does not reliably fix the drill shanks large diameter. This leads to the tool turning during operation.

Compared to clamping devices of the BZP category, toothed chucks for equipping drills provide reliable fixation of the tool in any situation. Users who frequently work with electric drills prefer this type of chuck. The only significant drawback of such devices is that the key with which they are activated is quite easy to lose. Meanwhile, the occurrence of such a problem can be easily avoided if, immediately after purchasing a drill, you fix the key on the device’s wire using insulating tape or ordinary rope.

The mini-drill chuck, installed on compact drilling devices, is also very popular. The latter are actively used by jewelry craftsmen. The mini chuck belongs to the category of quick-release chucks for a screwdriver or light drill. This small chuck, made primarily of brass, is used to hold tools with a shank diameter in the range of 0.1–4.5 mm.

Design and features of the toothed chuck

The classic drill chuck is a collet or cam type clamping device. They can hold not only various tools with a round shank, but also cylindrical workpieces for further processing. The main design elements of jaw chucks are:

  • cylindrical body;
  • an adjusting ring or sleeve rotating on the outer surface of the housing;
  • a cam mechanism or collet installed in the inside of the device body.

In turn, the collet mechanism, the elements of which are made of hardened steel, consists of three absolutely identical cams, which, when rotating the adjusting ring or sleeve, simultaneously approach each other, thereby ensuring reliable clamping of the tool shank. In the first models of chucks for mechanical drills, the collet jaws converged due to the rotation of the adjusting wheel; now an adjusting sleeve is used for this.

On one side, the drill chucks are installed on the shaft of the equipment used, and on the other, the tool with which the processing will be performed is inserted into them. Jaw chucks are primarily used to hold the following tools:

  • drill;
  • cutters;
  • taps with small diameter shanks.

How to remove a cartridge with a threaded connection

The question is how to remove the chuck from a drill, which is fixed on it using threaded connection, occurs quite often among home craftsmen. Such a clamp must be removed taking into account the fact that it is installed using a non-standard left-hand thread.

The threaded element of the clamping device is located in its internal part, so you must first move the clamping jaws as far apart as possible, which will provide access to the fixing screw, which can be unscrewed using a regular Phillips screwdriver. In drills without such a screw, the chuck is simply twisted off the shaft without carrying out the above-described preparatory work.

The head of the fixing screw can be Phillips, slotted, hexagonal or even star-shaped.

A screw with a left-hand thread, with which it is fixed to the drill threaded chuck, may wear out over time. To restore the reliability of such a connection, you can do the following:

  • insert a Phillips screwdriver into the head of the chuck screw on the drill;
  • Lightly tap the hammer to deepen the screw into the threaded hole.

Such actions will not harm the drill’s mounting unit, but will allow the clamping device to be fixed to it more accurately and reliably.

The interval 1.5–13 present in the designation data indicates the minimum and maximum diameters of the cutting tool being installed. The rules for replacing a chuck on a drill suggest that the new clamping device must have a marking that is completely identical to the designation of the old one.

To replace a chuck of this type with a drill, you simply need to select a clamping device with the appropriate marking and insert its seat into the conical hole of the drilling equipment. It is quite simple to navigate this marking: the letter “B” means that this is a cone-type cartridge, and the number indicates the diameter of the lower part of the mounting hole.

Removing a cone-type chuck from a drill is as easy as installing it. In order to perform this procedure, you simply need to knock out the clamping device from the mounting hole of the drill, for which you use a regular hammer. Drill chucks are used for drilling not only with hand tools- screwdriver, hammer drill or drill. They have European and Russian standards for the machine. Products must correspond in terms of fastener rigidity, radial runout, and standard size required for drilling, taking into account the density of the material and the thickness of the drill. The harder the material being processed, the greater the load on the drill. An incorrectly selected chuck can lead to breakage of the drill.

The chucks are divided into two main groups according to the method of mounting on the machine:

  • threaded connection with the machine;
  • using a cone that matches the mounting hole for cone fasteners in the machine.

These features also determine their differences internal structure. External Morse taper indicates that there is a conical structure inside. The self-clamping chuck must comply with the standards in the regulatory documents in terms of the size of the internal cone. Their choice is determined taking into account the need to carry out different types holes, the holder itself and ease of use with quick tool replacement. Morse taper, types of sizes according to clamping capabilities from the smallest drill diameter to the largest, the presence in the design of a key or a locking and fixing ring for each standard size is indicated in GOST 8522−79.

The design is:

  • with or without a nut fixing ring;
  • with clamping nut;
  • with a key.

Regulatory documents do not limit improvement and modification external forms, the most important thing is that the main parameters match. This makes it possible, when choosing a replacement sleeve or drill, to achieve the most precise fastening of the drilling tool. Features of the three-jaw chuck

Usually, the marking looks like this(on products from domestic manufacturers):

  • GOST 8522–79 - this marking designation clearly indicates compliance with all characteristics in the table, which was compiled in 1979.
  • KM V18; B16; B12 - this designates the Morse taper of the connecting hole.
  • PSK 3−16 - this indicates the range of drill diameters in millimeters.

The marking on the keyless chuck only indicates the diameter range of the drills being clamped and the size of the internal thread.

For a drilling machine, a three-jaw element with a drill fastening with a key meets GOST 8522–79, but the Morse taper also complies with SEV 148−75 standards. These are products that are manufactured in Russia, made in accordance with GOST 8522–79, they are suitable for drilling machines from foreign manufacturers who work according to international standards.

Dimensions taking into account GOST 8522–79 are a clear indication of compliance with the permissible radial runout and the standard size of the clamping range. In this case, compliance with the main parameters is not indicating a specific design. Appearance drill chucks vary:

  • by the absence or presence of a protective plastic casing;
  • by the length and shape of the working part;
  • by alloy color;
  • according to the method of fastening the main parts together.

The Morse taper changes upward depending on the size number. Radial runout tolerances change simultaneously with size.

For example, Morse taper B16 has drill chuck sizes 10 and 13. These indicators correspond to the upper limit of the drill clamp, the lower limit is determined by GOST 8522–79. Cartridge No. 15 is manufactured with a Morse taper B18 according to the same table. Its maximum clamping is 15 mm, minimum - 3 mm.

The quick-clamping tool must be selected taking into account the dimensions of the machine thread and the mounting hole. Key cartridges have a certain value. Cone adapters make it possible to install chucks with a larger or smaller cone on the machine, thus expanding the capabilities of the machine.

The most durable is the quick-release chuck, however, it is also the most expensive - it is a quick-change precision chuck. It is best suited for a machine that runs on high speed. Precision keyless chucks, as well as tapered shanks make them versatile.

Elements with quick-change holder

The cutting tool can be replaced without stopping the spindle. The chuck has a correspondingly tapered shank and a hole cone. The tool is installed simultaneously with a replaceable sleeve, on which there are two grooves, and inside the body, the quick-change drill chuck has two balls and recesses for them. The combination of grooves with balls on the replaceable bushing creates reliable fastening in the tool holder.

The fasteners are secured with a clamping outer ring. When changing the drill, the ring lifts up all the way, opening grooves into which spherical fixing fasteners are pressed when the sleeve is pulled out. Also the bushing insertion passes while the outer ring is raised. While lowering it, the balls are aligned with the grooves of the sleeve and recessed inside.

To prevent spontaneous release of the tool during operation, the quick-change drill chuck is equipped with a locking ring. The drill is transmitted from the spindle by means of a shank cone to a sleeve firmly held in the body by balls. This is for a vertical feed drilling tool. The ball fixation ring for a horizontal drilling machine is equipped with springs that close the holes in the body, preventing them from sinking inside the holes, which would lead to the constant release of the sleeve from different sides.

In order for the work to proceed faster, it is necessary to prepare the drills before starting it. They are mounted in replaceable bushings that correspond to the internal size of the cartridge and are placed according to the usage pattern. When drilling large diameter holes, a quick-change two-jaw product is used. The operating principle is the same, however, the three-jaw quick-release maximum size clamp according to GOST has less capabilities.

The self-clamping chuck, as well as the quick-clamping chuck, with a clamping range meets GOST standards for compliance with the cone. Moreover, both types of products are called quick-clamping, but only those that secure the drill with a nut to the body without using a key are self-clamping. B18 and B16 are the most commonly used cones for all types of threadless chucks. The self-clamping drill chuck has varying degrees of runout. As the cone increases, its permissible value increases, regardless of the accuracy of the machine itself.

Sometimes there may be times when detailed cleaning is required for the equipment to function properly. You can disassemble almost any cartridge, but you can’t put it back together. A quick-release fastener often has a casing with its components located underneath it. In this case, disassembling or using surface cleaning of parts must be determined by removing the plastic casing.

Generally can be disassembled using coarse physical strength, securing it in a vice and tapping it on the back side with a hammer. This method is applicable to prefabricated structures where all parts are made of thick metal, but not from a single piece of metal.

It is impossible to disassemble a quick-clamping cam, in which the holder and the crown form a monolith, using force alone. Due to its design, a heating tool may be required. For example, a construction hair dryer, which is capable of heating the metal up to 300 degrees. Before installing the chuck in a vice with a rotating ring, you need to hide its jaws inside. Heating of the rotating ring must be done from the outside, cooling it from the inside with the help of a cotton material installed inside, which is regularly poured with cold water while the part is heating.

After the required heating temperature, you can knock out the base from the ring, which will remain in the vice. The assembly process also requires heating the part.
