Therefore, even in the “godless” 20th century, when the choice of a name for a child ceased to depend on the calendar, and the Orthodox people (some of them) began to experiment with name signs “to the fullest”, parents still took a more approach to choosing names for their sons judiciously, realizing that his name would later become the basis of the middle names of their grandchildren. For this reason, the list of male names used by the Orthodox remained very constant - only rare “inventions” expanded its composition from time to time.

Actually, this rule works in the 21st century. Despite the enormous changes that have occurred in the “male part” of the Russian name, over the past more than 20 years the composition of these names has remained virtually unchanged. The bulk continue to be names that are often called traditional: they are drawn from Orthodox calendar, called the calendar.

But how their frequency has changed! For example, the frequency of use of the most common or, as they would now say, the most “rated” name throughout the second half of the 20th century in Russia, Alexander, decreased by 35% in the 90s of the 20th century and in the first decade of the current century. The number of cases of naming newborn boys with the name Andrei in Moscow has decreased by exactly the same amount. Alekseys and Igors were called half as often, and the rating of the name Sergei fell by as much as 75%. But in my youth, Sasha, Andryusha, Seryozha and Igori made up the majority of my classmates!

A reasonable question arises: in favor of what kind of name did all these once extraordinarily popular names lose their “palms of primacy”? Who now ranks first in the rankings?

And here we come to the fun part. Back in the 60s - 80s of the last century, Russian onomatologists sounded the alarm: the Russian name book was rapidly declining, literally shrinking. Almost half of all boys in Russia have less than 10 names! Active work has begun to popularize... traditional Russian names. Many books and reference books have been published telling about naming traditions, about what other names existed in Rus' in previous centuries. Indeed, thanks to a good knowledge of Russian literature of the 18th-19th centuries, every schoolchild in those days knew that the names Frol, Foma, Erema and Demyan are the names of characters in Russian fairy tales and fables, but not names real people- their contemporaries. And the efforts of scientists were not in vain. This did not happen right away. The process took, as we see, more than 2 decades. However, the fact that “the process has begun” is evidenced by an anecdote that arose in the first years of the 21st century.

The parents bring the boy for the first time to kindergarten. And, worried, they ask the teacher:

Well, however, while the names Form and Erema (that is, Eremey) are not yet among the most common (they are absent in the ranking of the first 50 names), but cases of their assignment to newborn boys in Moscow and in Russia as a whole are no longer an event exceptional. But a large number of other names appeared, or, more correctly, returned to our name list, which, as it seemed just 30-40 years ago, had already completely disappeared into history and folklore. Yes, actually, not even in folklore - all the jokes in those days were filled with Vovochka, that is, Vladimir (depending on the joke, this either upset me or made me proud of my name). And Foma and Yerema were not even allowed to tell jokes. What kind of ratings are there!

As we can see from the table below, the top position in the ranking of the most common names in Moscow given to newborn boys continues to be occupied by the name Alexander. But not by a large margin from the rest. Almost equal in prevalence to the once very rare name Artyom (Artem, Artemy). Maxim and Ivan are catching up with Alexander in the ranking. Their popularity has grown noticeably: the names Artyom and Artyom (well, simply because the letter E is still not always indicated) - by 260%; the name Maxim - by 157%, and the name Ivan - by 151%. And, for example, the name Daniil (with variants Danil and Danila) has “jumped” in popularity over the years by 660% and reached 6th place in the ranking among Muscovites!

But if we talk about records, then the names that require mentioning, first of all, are Makar, whose prevalence has increased by 12433% (!!!), Plato (3628%), Matvey (3526%) and Mark (2376%). All of them are now included in the top 50 highest-rated names given by Moscow parents to their sons in 2011.
