Pure surfing in Vietnam. Your first steps on the water

Recently, Vietnam has been attracting more and more tourist surfers, both beginners and experienced professionals. Interest in Vietnamese surfing has especially increased among tourists after competitions in this type of water sport were held here in the city of Vung Tau, at the Back Beach or Bai Sao spot. This country is considered one of the best for classic surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Some surf spots in Vietnam can be compared with Indonesian ones, and during the “high” season even with Hawaiian ones.

Best Surf Resorts

Mui Ne

The ideal place in Vietnam to go surfing is the resort, which is located in the south of the country in close proximity to the large city of Phan Thiet. The resort is famous as the surfing capital of Vietnam, as it has the most “correct” waves. And it is this sport that most attracts Russian tourists, which is why there are many Russian-language schools teaching this sport. “Pure” surfing is possible in Mui Ne Bay, and there are also good conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing. This place attracts surfers because there is a consistently directional wind almost constantly throughout the season (almost always at an angle of 45 degrees). Another advantage of Mui Ne Bay is the absence of any obstacles for surfing (rocks, corals, reefs) throughout the entire area. This is especially convenient for those surfers who are just starting out. By the way, it is better for beginners to take training here in the mornings, when there is no strong wind breaking the wave crest. But for experienced surfers, the waves that come during Philippine typhoons will be most suitable. The next advantage of the resort is constantly warm water at sea (+30C), which eliminates the need to wear a wetsuit. Mui Ne's first surf spot is called Malibu. The cape protects it from large waves, so it is very convenient for beginners. In the morning, this place is ideal for kitesurfing, and in the afternoon, when suitable waves arrive, it is convenient to practice classic surfing. However, in winter this surf spot can experience waves of up to four meters. Another surf spot is called Secret spot. This small beach is located under a cape and is characterized by regular waves. There are also spots such as Africa and Surf4you. The entire “high” season is suitable for practicing the classic type of surfing in Mui Ne, that is, the period from September to approximately April. But you can do kitesurfing and windsurfing all year round, since the wind in this place is almost constant.

Vung Tau

A place that is suitable for beginner surfers is the resort. This city is located in the south of the country. The beach here is more modest compared to Mui Ne. There are always small waves in Vung Tau, even if there is no wind at all. This is due to the presence of underwater currents. In January, wind gusts are usually strong, so the sea may be closed at this time. It is better to come to this resort in December-March. A summer time not suitable for surfing in this area. There are also Russian-language schools teaching surfing, mainly kitesurfing. The downside of the city and Vung Tau beach is its poor location. So, the city is located on a cape, so it is exposed negative impacts typhoons and other natural disasters.

Phan Thiet

Popular with surfers Vietnamese resort, located approximately three hours from Ho Chi Minh City. From September to April, “correct” waves are observed here, and the water in the sea warms up to a comfortable level of +27°C.

Nha Trang

The next place to go surfing is the city with its city beach called Vietnamese Beach. However, since there are always a lot of vacationers here, surfing is problematic. But surfers are still common. There are not many places to rent surfing equipment on this beach - only two. Near Nha Trang, an island called Hon Do also has surfing conditions. But greatest number surfers gather thirty kilometers south of the city of Nha Trang, namely on Bai Dai beach. In summer, the beach is an ideal place for beginners, as the waves are small at this time. But in the “high” season (winter) there are excellent waves for experienced surfers. It must be said that the wind conditions in Nha Trang are similar to the resort of Mui Ne.

Danang

The largest Russian-language school where surfing lessons are taught is AFRICA Surf&Kite Test Center. It is located on the beach owned by the Swiss Village Hotel in Mui Ne and has been operating since 2005. Experienced instructors not only provide their services here various types surfing, but everything is available for rent necessary equipment.

When choosing a school to teach this sport, you need to find out whether it operates all year round and for how long. Because the instructors of “seasonal” one-day events do not inspire confidence. In addition, do not trust “freelancers” who offer their services right on the beaches. This can be completely unsafe.

The surf school must provide insurance that is valid for the period of your training. If you have not been offered one, you should think about the professionalism of these specialists.

First, a brief geographical and historical background about Mui Ne, where, in fact, pure surfing is possible in Vietnam. Mui Ne is a bay in southern Vietnam, located just a few kilometers north of Phan Thiet. In the east, the bay ends with a cape on which stands the fishing village of Mui Ne, which is where the name of the bay comes from.

The almost uninhabited coastline in Vietnam has found a new active life about 15 years ago. Now on the approximately 15 km long coastline there are numerous hotels, guest houses, stations, restaurants, life is in full swing day and night. Surfer and kite!

Waves
The best and most correct waves for pure surfing(sometimes even pipes) in Vietnam come from September to April on East Coast right in Mui Ne, and during these months the water is warm, like fresh milk, and the climate is mild. And when the waves of a cyclone from the Philippines hit the coast of Vietnam, Mui Ne even becomes like the famous Hawaii! From April to September, in summer the waves move to another place - a good swell may come to the South and Southeast coasts.

The waves in Mui Ne are not as smooth and regular as in Indonesia and other famous surfing countries, but you can still learn to surf on them! The ideal place to teach beginners how to surf is in the eastern part of the bay, where the waves are very small, since the coast is covered by a cape. It’s great to progress in surfing in the western part of Mui Ne, where there are almost always waves. Here, in the western part of the bay, there is a magnificent surf spot - a safe sandy beach, without rocks or coral reefs, a beach with a shallow bottom and a low, “long” wave (and this, believe me, is the most important thing, there is nothing better in surfing, how to drive along a very long wave!)!

Surf spots Mui Ne
We monitor the forecast daily and choose the best surf spots for our students for the period of your studies!

The first surf spot is Malibu (on the windguru website it is listed as such). On windfinder.com this spot is called Mac Beach. In summer, this spot, protected from big waves by a cape, is perfect for those who are just starting to learn surfing, or who like to catch fun on small light waves! In the morning, kiters ride here - since at this time there is an excellent flat, and in the afternoon, surfers are welcome - small and comfortable waves come to the spot. But in winter, waves of 4 meters can come here. We need to keep an eye on the forecast!

The second surf spot - Secret spot - is a small beach located directly under the cape, thanks to which you can catch waves here even in strong winds. The waves here are regular and learning to surf takes place on a small beach break - a sandy beach.

Transfer by jeep to surf spots Malibu and Secret spot costs $20. The Africa and Surf4you spots are located within the Mui Ne resort area - you can walk to them or ride a motorbike.

Sun, air and water
Surfing in Vietnam in winter occurs at air temperatures of +30°C and water temperatures of +25°C. The sandy strip on the beach is 1-2 meters wide at high tide and 10-20 meters wide at low tide. Wave height varies from 1 m to 3 meters during the day and from 0 to 0.5 in the morning.

Surfing lessons
So in Mui Ne we offer you to learn to surf without spending extra effort and enjoying the process. To catch your first wave, in Mui Ne you need to move a little away from the shore - you won’t have to painfully overcome the surf. Well, our instructors on the shore will explain to you how to properly lie on a surfboard, how to row and how to jump onto a surfboard correctly, because it is these seemingly small, but very important details that determine how quickly and successfully you can start catching your first waves!

We are waiting for you to learn to surf in Mui Ne all year round!

Look in this video How to surf in Vietnam:

Surfing in Vietnam is not quite what you are used to seeing on TV, where brave, tanned, long-haired guys and girls conquer giant waves. In Vietnam, there are no huge waves that only masters can conquer, and beginners or simply those who like to swim in the sea have nothing to do. Here nature has created unique conditions for the Vietnam surfing season, steps in mastering surfing. Here you don’t need to be a muscular and pumped up “Baywatch” who can break through the impenetrable surf. Every vacationer, of any build and physical training, can learn to surf and bring home vivid impressions and excellent photo reports of how he conquers the Vietnamese wave. Here in Vietnam, after spending just a couple of hours learning to surf, you can surf on your own. You don't have to row with your hands for several hours, lying on the board, to get out beyond the surf. Completely calm, waist-deep in warm sea water, you just need to move a little away from the shore, choose a suitable wave, stand on it and ride along the beach, enjoying the feeling of unity with the ocean and victory over the elements. Here and only here, in Vietnam, there is a unique beach with a shallow bottom and a low, “long” wave (and this, believe me, is the most important thing), where you can master surfing easily and naturally, as if this is what you’ve been doing all your life.
For comparison, in the famous Hawaii, mastering surfing would take you up to two weeks, not to mention the fact that it would cost you serious physical effort and money.
There are several surf stations on the coast where they provide training and rent out equipment. The largest Russian station - AFRICA Surf&Kite Test Center, has existed since the beginning of 2005, located on the beach of the Swiss Village hotel.
Surfing in Vietnam
Moreover, in favor of the Vietnamese active rest The relative cheapness of vacations also stands out. Moreover, the indicator consists of many arguments, this and:
- cheap and comfortable hotel accommodation. located close to surf and kite schools
- diverse schools and bases focused on professionalism and purity of training. where you can not only learn various types water sports, but it is also relatively cheap to rent all the necessary equipment. but mostly training is conducted by English-speaking instructors; there are very few Russian-speaking specialists.
- favorable conditions for kitesurfing and classic surfing
Of course, in order to save even more, it is better not to change your board and take it with you.
In general, always take your own at least minimal equipment. Thus, a unique opportunity to save money appears and you will not depend on unclear conditions dictated by sluggish events. Why do you need a good board” if all the pleasure you get from conquering the next wave largely depends on the quality of the equipment used! Those for whom surfing has become an integral part of life will understand me perfectly.
BUT! Surfing in Vietnam favors several, perhaps, the best surf schools where you can rent custom Jimmy Lewisa lungboards! By the way, you can not only try them out, but also purchase them for personal use. At many stations you can buy not only used equipment, but also completely new boards. Such a purchase, as a rule, costs a pretty penny, but for some it is unique opportunity, which they obviously won’t want to miss.
Now let's add some specifics.

In Vietnam, like in most countries of Southeast Asia, there are only two seasons a year - the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season in Vietnam is not at all like what is shown in American films - when it rains like buckets and does not stop for weeks. It rains heavily here, but it only lasts 20 minutes, and an hour later the sun is already shining and not a trace remains of the previous downpour. Most often, even at the peak of the rainy season, it rains in the evening or at night.
The season for falling prices throughout Vietnam is from May to September. During this period, it is best to plan a trip for those who want to see the country and save a little money. It is at this time that hotels and guesthouses offer discounts on accommodation in their rooms (sometimes reaching up to 30%), special offers from airlines appear, and there are few tourists. The weather does not present any special surprises during this period, with the exception of the central part of Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Nha Trang), where hurricanes are possible on the coast in September-November.
In the south of Vietnam (Saigon, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet) - the main tourist center of the country, the rainy season lasts from May to November, however, inconvenience at this time is caused not by rain, of which there is not much here, but by strong winds, waves and sometimes cloudy skies , not transmitting Sun rays. The ideal time to visit this area is considered to be the dry season - from December to April.
On the central coast (Hoi An. Da Nang), on the contrary, from May to October it is dry and sunny, high humidity starts only in November. You can also relax here throughout the year, however, as mentioned above, there is a possibility of hurricanes in September-November. In December-February there is a very choppy ocean here and swimming will be quite difficult at this time.
In the north of Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa), the attractive season for tourists lasts from May to October. And from November to April it can be quite cold here - from +10 at night to +20 during the day, but hotel prices also drop.
The mountainous areas of Dalat (1500 m), Buon, Phuot and Sapa are quite cool at night throughout the year, and in winter period from October to March the temperature drops to +4C. Even in the hottest months - March and April, the temperature rarely exceeds +26C.
