As you might expect, a country that fought in the worst war of the 20th century is still hiding unexploded ordnance in the countryside. Therefore, deviating from the beaten path is impractical. And before you go off the beaten path in search of unexplored beaches, you need to think twice. Or better yet, three times.

Compared to unexploded bombs, hazards in water are generally less life-threatening. Along with the polluted stormwater and industrial runoff that characterizes many cities and towns in Vietnam, the ocean usually brings in trash.

However, it is worth considering purchasing travel insurance. This will save you unnecessary headaches and add peace of mind to your trip.

A good spot for those who are just taking their first steps in surfing. There are schools on the beach where you can easily rent a surfboard, as well as use the services of an instructor.

A popular place among surfers in Vietnam. They are more attracted to the northern part, for fishing village. This place attracts surfers because there is a consistently directional wind almost constantly throughout the season (almost always at an angle of 45 degrees). Another advantage of Mui Ne Bay is the absence of any obstacles for surfing (rocks, corals, reefs) throughout the entire area. This is especially convenient for those surfers who are just starting out. By the way, it is better for beginners to take training here in the mornings, when there is no strong wind breaking the wave crest. But for experienced surfers, the waves that come during Philippine typhoons will be most suitable. The next advantage of the resort is constantly warm water at sea (+30C), which eliminates the need to wear a wetsuit. Mui Ne's first surf spot is called Malibu. The cape protects it from large waves, so it is very convenient for beginners. In the morning, this place is ideal for kitesurfing, and in the afternoon, when suitable waves arrive, it is convenient to practice classic surfing. However, in winter this surf spot can experience waves of up to four meters. Another surf spot is called Secret spot. This small beach is located under a cape and is characterized by regular waves. There are also spots such as Africa and Surf4you. The entire “high” season is suitable for practicing the classic type of surfing in Mui Ne, that is, the period from September to approximately April. But you can do kitesurfing and windsurfing all year round, since the wind in this place is almost constant.

Vung Tau

A place that is suitable for beginner surfers is the resort. This city is located in the south of the country. The beach here is more modest compared to Mui Ne. There are always small waves in Vung Tau, even if there is no wind at all. This is due to the presence of underwater currents. In January, wind gusts are usually strong, so the sea may be closed at this time. It is better to come to this resort in December-March. A summer time not suitable for surfing in this area. There are also Russian-language schools teaching surfing, mainly kitesurfing. The downside of the city and Vung Tau beach is its poor location. Phan Thiet

It just so happens that the word surfing, for 90% of people involved in active sports, evokes the main association - Bali. That is, if you want to go surfing or study at a surf school, go to Bali. We found the answer for ourselves - this is Vietnam, and to be more specific, the village of Mui Ne, which gained its fame thanks to kite surfers and the cheapness of living here.

Let's be honest, if kitesurfing is for beginners in Mui Ne, it's not for everyone... that is. if you really, really want to learn and are ready not to stop in the face of all the difficulties that await you here in terms of kite (deep water, big wave, strong wind, i.e. everything that is good for professionals, but bad for beginners), then this is just right for surfing in Mui Ne ideal conditions for newbies.

You can take your first steps in surfing not even from deep water, but simply by going chest-deep into the water, lying down on the board and, together with our instructor, starting to catch your first waves. You don’t have to row a kilometer from the shore, and then, too tired, try to catch adult waves.

Surfing in Mui Ne is simply created for beginners and it’s very cool that there are not so many surfers here yet (although there are already enough) and there are quite a lot of surf spots (places for riding) that are maximally suitable for surf training - surf, go ashore, refresh yourself in a cafe fresh coconut and salad and back into the water for new waves and emotions!

Surfing lessons at our school take place mainly at two surf spots - Malibu beach and Breakwater.

Malibu Beach is located a little away from the center of Mui Ne, which is distinguished by a wide beach line, the absence large quantity tourists and traffic from athletes and students on the water. Here you don’t need to look around again and think only about how not to crash into another student, as often happens at other spots.

We also teach at the Breakwater spot, where the best recreational beach in Mui Ne is located. In addition, the Volnorez spot is located almost in the center of the tourist village, which may be more convenient for travelers living here.

Both surfing spots can “work” differently, so the decision about where it is better to practice at the current time is made directly depending on the surfing conditions. Where they are better is where we go.

The difference between surfing and kitesurfing is that you don’t need wind, but you do need waves. From lunch, a steady wind blows, with which you can take out your kites and go to study or ride in the warm and pleasant water. Yes, and in general, you can always decide what to do with yourself every day - for example, a day of surfing, then a day of kiting, then maybe volleyball, gym, tennis, etc. Well, or combine everything in one day, if you are a Terminator :-).

Simply put - there is no wind - we surf, there is wind - we ride a kite. Of course, there are days when there is no wind or waves, but they are very rare.

What to take with you to learn to surf

For clothing, you will need lycra, preferably with long sleeves and shorts. Perhaps, if you are cold, a short wetsuit will be useful (all this can be bought or rented directly from us).

This clothing is needed both for protection from the sun and, out of habit, to avoid rubbing abrasions on the surf.

So, we changed clothes, lubricated ourselves, and met the instructor. After this, they will briefly tell you the basic theory: the rules of behavior on the water, how to behave with a surfboard, what waves are, how they are formed and what we need them for.

In our surfing school, special attention is paid to safety. You will be required to know what reverse and side currents are, how to behave so that they do not interfere with us, but, on the contrary, help us when learning and surfing.

On the shore, we will practice body position on the board, when and how to row, how to get up, accelerate, brake, turn, etc.

Particular attention will be paid to practicing the correct stance, lifting/standing up on a surfboard on the shore, where this is much easier to do than in difficult conditions, right away, on the water. You will learn how to control your body, how to properly stand on a surfboard and how to control your body balance.

In surfing, a lot of attention is paid to balance; it will be necessary at all stages of learning. If you have been involved in snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, kiteboarding, or indeed, probably any active sport, this will certainly be a good bonus and it will be easier for you. However, you won’t be able to just get up and go straight away; you will have to learn in stages, moving from one exercise to another. There are not very many such exercises in surfing, but they exist.

After all these theoretical and practical exercises on land, we do some warm-up exercises, thereby eliminating the risk of injury or sprain during active exercise on the water.

Well, here comes the most interesting and difficult stage of learning to surf - you fasten the board to your leg, take it under your armpit and, together with the instructor, go into the water to catch your first waves.

We go out on the water, etc. The student cannot yet adequately assess which waves are suitable for travel and which are not, the instructor helps to navigate and chooses good waves himself.

When the wave begins to approach the surfer, the instructor commands the start of raking :-) But at the same time, because... beginners do not row very well and do not always understand how to do it, the instructor stabilizes the board in the water and gives the initial push to accelerate and get up on the surf comfortably

• Phan Thiet is a large resort town, 3 hours away from Ho Chi Minh City and its airport. The beaches experience stable waves during the surfing season (September-April). The water warms up to +27 °C. The advantage of this spot is a developed network of surf shops, rental and training points. In addition, the lush green vegetation behind the sand dunes adds picturesqueness and charm to the resort. Many hotels and guest houses are located on the first coastline, which makes recreation and sports at sea accessible and convenient.

• Mui Ne is a bay near the city of Phan Thiet (distance - about 15 km). An ideal place for surfing and related species sports such as windsurfing or kitesurfing. The coastal seabed is clean, flat, and does not hide any reefs or stones underwater. Plus a stable wind throughout the season, blowing at an angle of 45°. In the morning the waves are smooth, perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers. After lunch, the crests of the waves break, and only experienced athletes feel confident on them, and beginners at this time are better off doing something else, such as shopping or sightseeing in the area. The water in the bay is constantly warm, up to +27+30 °C. The most popular spots in the resort of Mui Ne: Malibu, Secret spot, Africa. Surfing season is from September to April. • Phu Quoc is an island in the southwest of the country, in the Gulf of Thailand, 60 km from the mainland. The area of ​​the island is more than 570 km 2 , it is the largest in Vietnam. There is an international airport (there are no direct flights from Russia) and a port where ferries and boats from the mainland arrive. The surfing season is from November to April, the so-called dry season is a period with good, stable waves. The waves become even stronger during the rainy season, but this is not for everyone; for extreme sports enthusiasts and in the rain, riding the waves is a real paradise.

The easiest way to fly to Vietnam from Russia is by direct flight from Moscow to the capital - Hanoi in the north or to Ho Chi Minh City in the south.
