How much does it cost to travel to Australia

And what to see in three weeks

My husband and I spent 600 thousand rubles on a three-week trip to Australia in March 2018.

Anna Denisova

blogger and traveler

We visited the Great Barrier Reef, the island of Tasmania and three major cities: Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

Friends from Russia ask how it was possible to squander so much in just three weeks. And friends from Australia wonder how we survived.

I carefully planned the trip and recorded the expenses on the trip. I'll tell you where we visited, how much and what we spent in the end.

Visas

We issued visas ourselves. The application was submitted on the website of the Australian Embassy. Very convenient: no need to go and bring originals, everything is served through the site.

12 791 R

cost two visas

We needed:

  1. A copy of the passport - a photo from the phone came up.
  2. Confirmation of previous trips - attached photographs of old visas.
  3. Bank statement in English.
  4. List previous places work and study in English on a special form.
  5. A certificate from the employer confirming income and vacation for the dates of the trip.
  6. Trip plan - attached a Word file with a list of cities and dates.

Plane tickets and hotel reservations are not required: the Australian Embassy does not recommend paying for flights and accommodation before obtaining a visa.

We paid the consular fee - 140 $ (6403 R) and 1.47 $ (67 R) commission for payment by card. This money cannot be returned, even if the visa is denied. The fee must be paid on the website of the embassy at the rate assigned by it. At the time of payment, it asked for the Australian dollar 45.21 rubles, and the Central Bank - 44.99 rubles.

The state currency of Australia is the Australian dollar

The deadline for issuing an Australian visa depends on the workload of the consulate. The embassy website has a special section with an average waiting time. In my case, they promised to consider the application in a maximum of 35 days, but the visa came after 40. I justify the delay on New Year's holidays.

Australian visa - electronic. It is not pasted into the passport; instead, upon entry, they simply check in the database whether you have it or not. Us on email sent a modest letter with a visa.

Tickets to Australia

You can only fly to Australia from Russia with a transfer. The journey takes almost a day. Air China had the cheapest tickets for our dates. We decided to overpay 10 thousand rubles and fly Etihad Airways: they have shorter connections and you can fly through Abu Dhabi, where we have not been before.

For Etihad Airways and Emirates, tickets include one piece of baggage, maximum 30kg, and for Air China, two pieces of 23kg per person. For many, this is convenient, but I travel with a minimum of things. The trunks that the Chinese drag with them on the plane annoy me.

125 491 RUB

spent on two tickets Moscow - Sydney - Moscow with a transfer in Abu Dhabi

We bought tickets three weeks before departure and paid the same as if we had paid for the flight 4 months in advance.

I travel a lot, but I have never paid 62,745 rubles for one ticket. My hands trembled a little when I confirmed the purchase of non-refundable tickets for 125,491 rubles.

Flights in Australia

We decided to explore the country as much as possible in one trip, because we will not fly to such a distance again soon, or never at all. Therefore, we decided to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the island of Tasmania and three large cities: Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. They set aside a week for Sydney, and 2-3 days for everything else.

We traveled around the country in a rented car and airplanes. You can also travel by trains and intercity buses, but we did not use them.

Traveling by plane in Australia is as easy as traveling by bus in Russia. Tickets are relatively inexpensive: we flew from city to city four times, and paid 58,756 rubles for two.

My Australian friends advise even small trips plan 2-3 months in advance: Australians love to travel around the country and redeem tickets quickly. I found out about this when I paid five times more than planned for the flight from the island of Tasmania to Melbourne. There were still cheap tickets three weeks before departure, but a week later they were sold out.

You can only take on board for free carry-on luggage weighing up to 7 kg. Therefore, when booking tickets, we also paid for luggage. The price depends on the weight - for a 15-kilogram small suitcase, we paid $ 15-20 (687 -916 R).

It happens that at the airport, baggage and hand luggage are not weighed. But it’s better not to count on it: once we decided to take a chance and took an extra bag with gifts. It was on this flight that the luggage was counted and weighed. I had to pay 72 $ (3299 R). With this money, it was almost possible to buy another ticket.

Flights within Australia - $ 1244.64 (R 57,032)

Sydney - island of Tasmania

$ 232.32 (RUB 11,119)

Tasmania - Melbourne

$ 487.88 (R 23 351)

Melbourne - Gold Coast

$ 230.3 (RUB 11,022)

Gold Coast - Sydney

$ 222.14 (RUB 9,952)

Unscheduled baggage

72 $ (3312 Р)

Australia's airports have separate zone for domestic flights. There are no queues: online check-in is available on all flights. You can check in and collect your luggage using the quar code - you need to show it to the airport employee or scan it at the self-check-in counter. Baggage acceptance ends 20 minutes before departure.

Pre-flight screening takes less than five minutes. There is no usual limitation on the volume of transported liquid, only piercing and cutting and dangerous items are prohibited. In some cases, security officers may ask you to open the bag and show what is inside. Our quadcopter twice aroused suspicion, but nothing happened.

All flights lasted an hour and a half: you just took off, and you are already landing. On the plane, food is only available for an additional fee, you need to order food when online check-in for the flight. I have never seen anyone use this service.

Car rental

We drove two thousand kilometers by car: 500 km - across the island of Tasmania and 1500 km - from the Gold Coast to Gladstone, the nearest east point Great Barrier Reef. We spent 39,986 rubles on rent and gasoline.

Opal cards are sold at the central station, newsagents and supermarkets. You can replenish the card in the terminals at any station; a list of all points is also available on the company's website.

We loved the ferry ride from home to the city center because it has a beautiful route: in ten minutes of travel, you can enjoy the view of the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. The locals are not surprised by this, they sit inside the ferry all the way, buried in their phones. One trip cost $ 5.88 (270 R) per person.

We bought two cards for $ 40 (1840 R) and paid for the ferry trip with them three times.

In total, we spent about 28,600 rubles on public transport.

Entertainment

Almost all of our entertainment was associated with nature. There are also many animals in Australia that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.

In Sydney. We liked Taronga Zoo for its combination of nature and urbanism: a giraffe against the backdrop of skyscrapers is an interesting sight. A ticket can be bought in advance on the zoo's website for $ 42.3 (R 1946) or at the entrance for $ 47 (R 2162).

We spent one day in Sydney walking around the Sea Life Sydney aquarium. It is considered one of the best in the world due to the hundred-meter glass tunnels in which rare species fish, sharks and rays. We paid for tickets at $ 42 (1932 R) per person, but we could have saved by buying for $ 33.6 (1546 R) in advance on the aquarium website.

With a single ticket for $ 70 (3220 R), you can visit the aquarium, museum wax figures, Sydney Tower and Wild Life Zoo. This is beneficial: tickets to each seat separately will cost $ 154 (7084 R). But we were only interested in the oceanarium.

On the Great Barrier Reef we lived right on the reefs. They also wanted to see the underwater world at great depths, so they took an excursion at the hotel for $ 50 (2300 R) per person. We were taken by boat away from the island. For an hour we swam in the ocean with pipes and admired fish and corals. I almost died of fear when a shark swam past me. It turned out that not all sharks eat people. The reefs that live there are safe.

Internet and communication

When traveling, we constantly need the Internet: read news in Telegram and check mail, post photos and stories on Instagram, call colleagues and relatives.

7026 RUB

spent on internet

Free Wi-Fi at airports, cafes and apartments is not enough for this, so we used a special tourist SIM card. In Australia, we used it to pay 0.01 euros per MB. The call quality was excellent. We did not limit ourselves on the Internet and were often lazy to ask for a password from a free wifi. As a result, we spent 6106 R for two for the entire trip.

The only place where there was no connection was the Great Barrier Reef. There we bought Wi-Fi at the hotel. We paid 920 rubles for two days. In total, 7026 rubles were spent on the Internet.

Shopping

All shops accept cards. Cash is not used in Australia. You can pay with them, but no one does that. We've always used the map too.

The prices for clothes are the same as in Russia, sometimes a little lower: I bought a swimsuit for $ 69 (3174 R). In the Moscow online store, the same costs 3990 rubles.

73 920 RUB

spent on shopping and gifts

From Australia it is necessary to bring rum from the well-known local firm "Bundaberg". We specially drove into the city of the same name at the factory, where they can write anything on the label. A regular bottle costs $ 39.99 (R 1840), and with an inscription - $ 49.99 (R 2300).

We also brought home a kilogram of traditional Australian macadamia nuts. We bought them in a regular supermarket for $ 50 (2300 R). I'm a passion fruit fanatic, so I bought 20 for $ 1.5 (69 R) at the local market.

In Russia, Australia is associated with kangaroos, so we took jerkies as gifts - dried kangaroo, emu and crocodile meat, at $ 4-10 (184 -460 R) per pack.

Many products and things of animal origin, more than 2.25 liters of alcohol and 25 cigarettes, cannot be imported into Australia. There are no export restrictions. The current rules for the import of products are described

In total, 73,920 rubles were spent on shopping and gifts.

Outcomes

Three weeks later, we became poorer by 605,501 R, but lived our whole life in another part of the world. This time was enough to cover the main cities, but not enough to rest. We were exhausted, constantly moving from place to place.

If you want to repeat our feat, remember:

  1. The flight is long and expensive, if you really dare to pay this money, fly for a long time.
  2. Plan to visit multiple cities: domestic flights are inexpensive and convenient.
  3. Plan your movements around the country: the closer to the date, the more chances that the Australians have already bought everything.
  4. If you want to save on food, buy groceries in supermarkets and markets.
  5. You can safely live in cheap places, even the rooms in other people's apartments are very comfortable.

To determine the dates of travel to distant Australia, you need to have a clear idea of the purpose of the trip. In addition, it is important to understand that you will hardly be able to see everything, everything, everything at once, because Australia is a country with a huge territory. This means that we also have to decide on a specific region.

Australia is dominated by two climatic zones: tropical and temperate. To get the most out of the tropics, travel between April and September. V the given time good for visiting the Great Barrier Reef, the cities of Cairns, Darwin, Broome and Kimberley.

In principle, 40% of the country's territory is located in this climatic zone, that is, all northern and western regions. Here, the climate is determined by two seasons: a rainy tropical summer, lasting from October to March, and a dry winter, which begins in April and lasts until September inclusive. At this time, the temperature is between 17 and 28 degrees Celsius.

The entire south of the country is in temperate, which means that the weather here is amazing at any time of the year. True, with some reservations.

For example, if in September-November the air temperature is about 20 degrees, in December-February it rises by another 10-12 degrees. But from March to August it is cooler - from 7 to 20 degrees. Thus, for exploring cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, Adelaide and Perth, most months of the year are quite suitable, except for those when the sun does not spare neither tourists nor locals.

Winter

When winter is on our calendar, hot summers begin in most Australian regions. If you want to spend some time on the beach, then head to Darwin. Here from December to February hot weather you are guaranteed -30 degrees, no less! Luxurious beaches near Brisbane - the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast - are also ideal during this period. The average air temperature is about 29 degrees, and the water in the ocean is plus 25.

It is even warmer these months in the areas of Alice Springs and Ayers Rock, famous for their natural attractions. To study them, we advise you to choose cooler periods, since with a heat of 35 degrees, there is a high probability of getting sunstroke and spending the rest of your vacation in a room under the supervision of a doctor.

In Sydney, from December to February, a real "steam room". The thermometer can rise to a record 45 degrees, and drop to 25-30 at night. Think about whether it is worth going to the largest city in the country at this time? You can hardly bring yourself to leave your air-conditioned room. In addition, biting and sucking insects are activated in such heat. So, it is better to choose a different season to visit Sydney.

But in the south and west of the country at this time it is not so hot: average temperature during the day it is kept at around 20 degrees. If the purpose of your visit is to see natural and cultural attractions, then feel free to take tickets - excursions and hikes will not be tiresome at all.

Spring

In early spring, the rainy season begins in Sydney, but in Melbourne there are practically none. In general, at this time of the year, the country is warm enough, but you should understand that this is a natural autumn. Take this into account and keep in mind that winter is coming by the end of May, so you need to have time to visit the desert or go to the central part of Australia before the end of May.

Summer

In the summer, ski resorts are open in Australia, as the local winter comes into its own. V southern parts the thermometer rarely rises above 10 degrees. During this time, tourists flock to resorts such as Perisher Blue, Buller and Selwyn Snowfields. If you want warmth, then go to Far North the mainland - here and at this time of the year there is wonderful weather. It rains here and there, so, for example, it is better to refrain from traveling to Tasmania.

Autumn

The weather in Australia is most favorable in autumn, especially for exploring the sights and national parks. From September to November it stands here spring weather- in all regions it starts to warm up noticeably.

In Melbourne, the temperature reaches 20-22 degrees by November, and in Sydney at this time it can easily reach 24 degrees. In the resorts of Brisbane in November it is already quite possible to sunbathe, and this tan will certainly turn out to be chocolate. With an air temperature of 27-28 degrees, the water is still cold - about 18-19 degrees.

  • aboriginal, versed in the habits of the animal;
  • a real hunter who teaches weapons handling skills;
  • a translator (if necessary) who will be able to convey the entire flavor of communication into an understandable language.

Kangaroo hunting is considered no less exciting, but safer. There are about 50 million of them in the country, so at least 5 million are shot annually. Anyone can join one of these events.

Of course, you can choose more quiet rest... For example, take a sightseeing tour of Sydney or visit a local wildlife sanctuary to pet a koala or take a photo with a kangaroo. As they say, each product has its own buyer. What attracted you to amazing Australia?
