Joshua was born into a Nigerian family. Eta Odusania's mother is a social worker, while Robert's father is a British citizen with Nigerian and Irish roots. Joshua has one brother and two sisters. The childhood years of the future world champion were spent in Nigeria. Joshua returned to Foggy Albion at the age of 12, when it was time to go to school. After receiving school education, Anthony got a job at a brick factory in Watford.

Joshua began boxing at the age of 18 at the London club Finchley ABC on the advice of his cousin. Before that, Anthony played football well.
